Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. BURKs, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Pumps, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in pumps and more particularly to a driving mechanism for deep well pumps.
The principal object of this invention. is the provision of such a mechanism which is simple and strong in construction and operation, to which access may be readily had for r the purpose of examination and repair,
which may be readily taken apart for re air4 or replacement of any defective or bro en parts and which is thoroughly and completely lubricated, the whole driving mechaiiism being enclosed in an oil tight casing.
Another object o this invention is the improvement in details of construction and arrangement of the driving mechanism, whereby a simple and ellicient apparatus of thischaracter is provided..
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafterappear, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be. defined in the appended claims, refereiice being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and which show, merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, a preferred embodiment of my invention, it being expressly understood that various changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from my inventive idea.

Referring now to the drawings, the nucover plate 11 and being adapted to be lled with lubricant. Along the lower part thereof this casing 1s provided with a plurality of apertured ears 12 which are adapted to receive the rods or pipes 13 which ormpart of the motor supporting platform or base 14 on which a suitable motor or other source of power is mounted. t
These apertured ears or-bosses 12 are so p laced on the gear case as to be in both vertical and 'longitudinal alignment with the apertures in the supporting parts of the platform or base, this particular latform or base being disclosed and claime in my Patent No. 1,272,866.
At its other end this casing 10 is provided with the extension -15 which is provided with an enlarged circular aperture 16 and the flange 17 provided with a plurality of internally threaded bosses 18. This extension '15 is also provided with a suitable aperture adapted to receive the air compressor element of the discharge head, as will be here-- inafter described. It is to be particularly noted that this extension 15 is formed as an integral part of the 'gear case itself, these parts all forming one casting.
In .the upper part of the casing 10 and in alignment on opposite sides thereof I provide the apertured bosses 19 and 20, see particularly Figs. 2 and 3, the boss 19 providing a bearing for thev pinion shaft 21 on the outer end of which is mounted the driving ulley constructions 21', this pulley being driven by a suitable belt 22 from the motor or other source of power previously referred to. Secured to this shaft 21 and adjacent one side of the casing 10 is a driving pinion 23, the other end of shaft 21 having a bearing in the bushing 23' which is removably held in position Within then casing by means of the plug 24 fitting within the boss 20. It is therefore seen that this pinion shaft has a bearing in both sides of the casing.
Tn the lower part of the casing and out of vertical and horizontal alignment with said bosses 19 and 20, ll provide the bosses 25 and 26, see particularly Fig. 6, which are each provided with a tapered aperture as shown. Tn the apertured boss 25 T secure the corresponding tapered stub or short shaft 27, while in the other apertured boss 26, ll secure the stub or short shaft 28, these shafts 27 and 28 each being held in place by means of a lock screw 29. The gear 30 is mounted to rotate on the shaft 27, this gear meshing with the pinion 23, previously described. The crank 31 is mounted to rotate on shaft 28 and the crank and gear are connected together by the wrist pin construction 32. The gear 30 and the crank 31 actually form an integral part .or unit, the wrist pin 32 being in the form of a steel sleeve or tube which is placed in the mold when the parts are cast, the molten metal filling the sleeve or tube so as to form a close union between the parts and thereby form a unitary construction.
Secured in the end of shaft 27 is fulcrumed pin 33 on'which is loosely mounted the idler arm-34 on the end of which is rotatably mounted vthe idler pulley 35, in alignment with the belt 22 so as jto engage and tighten the same, spring 36 affording the requisite tension. This idler pulley may be dispensed with when the pump is driven from an ordinary line shaft.
The walking beam member 37 is mounted for oscillation on the shaft 38 which is secured in suitable apertures near one of the upper corners of the casing 10 on each side thereof. This walking beam memberis in the form of a bell crank, one arm of which is positioned entirely within the casing and the other arm of which extends without the Same in a general horizontal position, passing thru a suitable opening 39 in the casing, as shown particularly in Fig. 5 of the drawings, these armsbeing designated 4() and 41, respectively. The arm 40 which is the actuating arm, is provided with an elongated slot or guideway 42 which slidably lreceives the crank brasses 43 which are substantially rectangular in cross section and formed with the circular opening therethru. These crank brasses are formed in one piece and are cut into after machining. The wrist pin 32 is positioned between the two crank brasses, as shown particularly in Fig. 5, of the drawing, a suitable holding bolt or means 44 being provided or the lower end, of the arm 40 of the walking beam construction. Thsarm is also cut out to orrn`^an arc shaped opening 45 to receive the pinion shaft 21. To the outer end of'the arm 41 ll secure the handle attachment member 46 which is provided With a socket part 47 adapted to receive a handle whereby the pump may be manually actuated. This member 46 is also provided with suitable apertures to receive the connecting rods for operating the pump proper which will now be described.
The pumpor discharge head 48 is not shown in detail, but it includes a differential plunger which is connected to the member 46 by means of connecting rod 49 and an air compresser plunger which is connect ed to the member 46 by means of connecting rod 50, it being recalled that the air compresser part of the discharge head is positloned in an extension of the main opening 16 in which the discharge head as a whole is mounted. This discharge head is provlded with a suitable Hangs 51 adapted to receive the bolts or other securing means 52, which pass into the screw threaded lugs 18, previously referred to, whereby the discharge head as a whole is held directly to the extension of the casing in suitable position for pumping operation.

Having described my invention, what ll claim is 1. A mechanism of the character described includingin combination, a casing, a pinion `shaft extending across the casing and having a bearing on each side thereof, a pinion mounted thereon within the casing, a gear wheel mounted within the casing and meshing Awith the pinion and driven thereby, a crank rotatably mounted within the casing and a wrist pin connecting said crank and gear wheel, a walking beam construction mounted for oscillation Within the casing and having one arm extending without the casing for operatino` a pump construction, said walking beam being provided with a guideway in the form of an elongated slot, a boX construction connected to said wrist pin and slidably mounted in said guideway, said walking beam also having an opening to permit the passage of the shaft on which said pinion is mounted. v
2. A mechanism of the character described including in combination a casing, a shaft extending across the casing from one side to the other 'and journaled in each side thereof and having a driving pinion secured thereto within the casing, a gear wheel mounted for rotation within the casin on one side thereof and meshing with sald pinion and driven thereby, a crank mounted for rotation withinv the casing on the other side thereof and a wrist pin connecting said crank and gear Wheel, a walking beam mounted for oscillation within the casing and having one arm extending without the casing adapted to actuate a pumping mechanism, said walky ing beam provided with an aperture to perm1t the passage therethru of the pinion shaft, said walking beam also being provided with an elongated guideway and a box construction connected to said wrist pin and slidable in said guide-way.
3. A mechanism of the character described including in combination a casing, a driving shaft journaled in the casing and extending entirely across the same, means for driving said shaft, a pinion secured to said shaft within the casing, a pair of stub shafts secured to opposite sides of the casing, a gear Wheel rotatably mounted on one of said stub shafts and meshing with said pinion so as to be driven thereby, a crank rotatably mounted on the other stub shaft and a Wrist Vpin connecting said crank and said gear slot or recess forming a guideway, and a box construction connected to said wrist pin and slidably mounted in said guideway.
4. A mechanism of the character described, including, in combination, a casing, a shaft extending across the casing from one side to the other and journaled in each side thereof, a driving pinion secured to said shaft within the casing, said casing having a tapered opening in each side thereof and in alignment, a stub shaft having a taperedend fitting each tapered opening, a gear wheel rotatably mounted on one stub shaft and meshing with said pinion so as to be driven thereby, a crank rotatably mounted on the other stub shaft and a wrist pin connecting said crank and said gear wheel, a walking beam mounted for oscillation Within said casing and having one arm extending without the casing, for actuating a pumping mechanism, said walking beam having an elongated guideway, and a box construction connected to said Wrist pin and slidably mounted in said guideway.
