tattili?? BOAT.
Application filed July 23, 1923.
To @ZZ whom Z1 72254;/ concern Be it known that l, CHARLES il?. Moonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thorntown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boats and has for an object the provision of means whereby a boat may be driven through the water by manually operated means at a relatively fast speed.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel steering apparatus, whereby the latter may be operated by the feet, so as to leave the hands of the operator vfree for the operation of the boat driving means.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a combined propeller guard and rudder shoe and additional means positioned in advance thereof to provide a delector or stop.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction7 to be hereinafter more fully de-` scribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the hull of a boat and showing the application of thc invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is a front elevation.
Figure 4 is a rea-r elevation.
Figure 5 is a'transverse section on the. line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as applied to a boat, the hull of which is indicated at 10 and the seats at 11 of which there may be any desired number.
Mounted upon a shaft 12 extending through the stern of the boat is a propeller 13, a pinion 14 being also mounted upon this shaft. This pinion is engaged and driven by a gear 15 which is mounted upon the drive shaft 16, while the latter is mounted in suitable bearing standards 17. The shaft 16 has also mounted thereon a fly wheel 18.
Pivotally mounted upon the standards 17 are operating levers 19, of which there may Serial No. 653,308.
be a suitable number, three being shown, one
for each of the seats 11. The levers 19 are provided with handles or grips 20 so that the occupants of the seats may conveniently rock the levers upon their pivots. These levers are connected to gears 21 by means of rods 22, the latter having an eccentric connection with the gears. The gears 21 engage and drive pinions 23 which are secured upon the drive. shaft 16 so that rotation of the gears through the operation of the levers 19, will rotate the shaft 16 and operate the propeller 13. By this means the boat may be driven through the water at av relatively great speed and with a minimum effort.
Mounted upon the stern of the hull 10 is a rudder blade 24, the upper end of which is pivotally connected to the hull as at 25. The lower end of the blade 24 is pivotally mounted upon one end of a shoe 26, the opposite end of which is secured to the hull. This shoe thus acts as a support for the rudder and as a guard for the propeller.
Extending laterally from one side of the rudder is an arm 27 which is connected to a bell crank lever 23 by means of a link 29, while the saidy lever 28 is connected to another bell crank lever 30 by means of a link or rod 31. The bell crank lever 30 is connected to one end of a rod 32 which extends and is slidably longitudinally of the hull and which is provided with spaced means 33 for engagement by the feet of a person upon any of the seats 1 1. It should be noted that there are two rods 32 shown in the drawings7 but ity is thought that description of one of these rods together with the associated elements thereof will be suioient. By pushing the rod 32 forward, the' rudder may be pivotally moved to steer the boat in one direction, while like movement of the other rod will move the rudder in an opposite direction as will be readily understood.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A boat of the character described including a hull, a rudder blade pivotally connected to the upper end of the hull, a
substantially leshaped snoe having one end secured to the hull and its opposite end receiving the lower end of the rudder blade therein, arms extending laterally from the sides of the rudder blade, hell crank levers associated With said arms through the medium or a link carried thereon, lower bell Crank levers connecting` With said rst mentioned levers and rods extending and slidahle longitudinall'hgT ot the hull with means carried thereon for engagement hy the operators toet 'for the operation of said rudder blade.
2. A boat of the character described in- @hiding` a hull, a propeller, a shaft extendingl inwardly 'from said propeller and carrying` a pinion thereon, the said pinion being engaged and driven by a gear mounted upon a drive shaft carrying a iiy Wheel and gears and positioned Within hearing` standards, offset operating levers mounted upon said standards`r gears meshing With the gears on said drive shaft and connected eccentrically with said operating levers through the medium of rods carried thereon Wherehy the operation of the mechanism will propel the boat.
lin testimony Whereo'lE l affix my signature.
