PETER-CARNEGIS, or WASHINGTON. DISTRICT or COLUMBIA.
BOAT-PROPELLING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 14, 1919.
Application filed October 27, 1917. Serial No'. 198,843.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER CARNEeIs, a subject of Greece, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat-Propelling Mechanism, of which the fo-llowing is a specification.
This invention relates to marine propulsion, and it is the dominant object of the invention to provide an improved manuually operable boat propelling mechanism, whereby a boat can be driven over the surface of a body of water at an appreciable speed and withbut little effort or exertion upon part of the operator.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide a propelling mechanism whereby a boat provided with the same can be driven in a reverse direction as the occasion arises.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of 'the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan of the invention applied to a boat having parts broken away, and,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough.
Having more particular reference to the drawings and in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts in the several views, 1 represents a boat provided with the improved propelling mechanism, the boat having a rudder 2 arranged thereon, which rudder is connected with suitable steering gear 3.
A propeller shaft 4 is arranged longitudinally of the rear portion of the boat 1 and has a portion of the same arranged in suitable bearings 5 and extended for a distance slightly beyond the boat whereby a propeller 6 can be mounted-thereon.
Bearing pillars 7 are arranged in the bottom of the boat 1 and rotatably support the opposite extremities of a crank shaft 8,
which as will be noted, has sprocket wheelsV 9 arranged thereon. Sprocket chains 10 are passed about the several sprocket wheels 9 andA about smaller sprocket wheels 11 journaled in bearings 12 arranged adjacent the bearing pillars 7; it being noted in this connection, that the said bearings 12 are arranged in disalined positions, the purwith the crank shaft 4 and with foot pedals` 16, which pedals in turn are pivotally mounted on bases 17 secured to the flooring of the boat at a point convenient to the operators seat 18.
In operation, the operator is seated on the seat 18 and engages the foot pedals with his feet and alternately moves the same. Obviously, such motion will cause rotation of the crankfshaft'4 and as a consequence, rotary motion will be imparted by way of the sprocket chains 10 to the sprocket Wheels 12 and from them by -way of the beveled gear connected to thev same to the propeller shaft, thus rotating the propeller and driving the boat over a surface of water. To reverse the direction of `travel of the boat, it is only necessary to reverse the operation of the foot pedals.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I considerl within the spirit of my invention.
c I claim:
In combination with a boat and a propeller shaft therefor, a screw propeller carried by the shaft, a double faced bevel gear wheel on said shaft, parallel stub-shafts supported in the boat at right angles to the propeller shaft and on opposite sides of the gear wheel, bevel gear wheels carried by the stub-shafts arrangedl forwardly and rearwardly and at diametrically opposed points of the double faced bevel gear wheel, the second mentioned gear wheels meshing with the opposed sets of gear teeth of the double faced gear wheel, spaced bearing whereby the Crank and propeller shafts may pillars arranged in the boat, a crank shaft be rotated in either direction to propel the mounted in said pillars, permanent driving boat, forwardly or rearwardly. 10
. Connections between each stub-shaft and In testimonyl whereof, I atlix my signathe crank shaft, rods connected .with the ture hereto.
crank shaft, and pivotal pedals supported in the boat andoonnected with the rods PETER CARNEGIS.
