MAGELLAN ALDERMAN, OF PLANT CITY, FLORIDA.
PROPELLING DEVICE FOR BOATS.
Application filed May 13, 1912.
0 all whom it may 0011 cam Be it known that I, lVlAGELLAN ALDERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plant City, in the county of I-Iillsboro, State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propelling Devices for Boats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in boats, and has particular reference to manually operated means for propelling boats.
The principal object is to provide a simple and efiicient device of this character, which, may be readily placed in a boat of ordinary construction, and by means of which the boat may be propelled by one person operating the device with the hands and feet at the same time. This and other objects will be apparent from the following description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure l'is a vertical longitudinal section of the aft portion of the boat showing my mechanism applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 10 represents the boat, and 11 the flooring therein. On the floor is mounted a housing 12, in which is journaled a shaft 13 carrying a worm wheel 14, which is adapted to mesh with a worm collar 15 on the pro peller shaft 16. The propeller shaft extends through the casing at an angle, as shown, the portion of the casing 17 being partially cylindrical in shape to receive the Worm collar 15. The shaft extends downwardly and rearwardly and passes through the bearing blocks 18 and 19 secured to the inner and outer faces of the bottom of the stern. On each end of the shaft 13 is a crank 22. On the upper end of the shaft 16, which projects through the housing 12, is a fly wheel 30.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
Serial No. 696,981.
Extending to a suitable distance in the rear of the housing 12 and secured thereto are the bracket arms 26 and 27 in which a lever 24 is vertically arranged and pivoted thereto. Pivoted to the lower end of the lever 24 is one end of a forked link 23 the arms of which are loosely attached to the cranks 22. Extending laterally fromboth sides of the lever 24 are the foot rests 25. The lever 24 has a cross bar or handle 24, on its upper end which may be grasped by one sitting in the seat 21 and the gear 14 rotated, and at the same time by placing the feet on the foot rests 25, and moving them back and forth, additional power is obtained. This will cause the lever 24 to swing back and forth on its pivot on the bracket 21.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the boat may be propelled by means of the lever 24 by hand and the foot rests 25, thus making the operation easier.
What is claimed is:
A. propelling mechanism for a boat having a screw propeller and shaft, a worm collar on saidshaft, a fly wheel on the shaft, a housing, a transverse shaft in the housing, a worm pinion mounted on the transverse shaft and meshing with the worm collar, cranks on the transverse shaft, a seat to the rear of the housing, a rearwardly extending bracket on the housing, a lever pivoted intermediately of its ends to the bracket and extending vertically, a forked link pivoted to the lower end of the lever at one of its ends, the outer ends of the arms of the links being connected to the cranks, and foot rests on the lower end of said lever so that the said lever can be operated with the feet and hands simultaneously.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
MAGELLAN ALDERMAN.
