FABRIC-ROLL-END PROTECTOR.

To all w/wmit may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BELLAIRS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mishawaka, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fabric-Roll- End Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to fabric roll end protectors, and had for its object to provide adequate protection for the ends of fabric rolls to prevent. damage to the edges of the fabric due to rough handling, and in the shipment thereof by careless loading and unloading which permits the rolls to fall and strike on edge with resultant damage to the edge of the fabric. A further object is to provide a closure for the ends of the rolls which are rolled in tubular form, whereby nails, glue, and other securing material for applying the fabric, as in the case of roofing material, may be carried within the roll and the loss thereof prevented during shipment or in the handling thereof by the dealer and the ultimate consumer.
Av further object of the invention resides in the provision of end closures for rolls of fabric, such as for rolled roofing material, which closures may be handily and quickly applied and as readily removed, and which closures and means for securing same are simple in structure, are of few parts, and may be cheaply manufactured.
A further object is to provide a clamp linked to the end of a rod adapted to be passed through the fabric roll for connecting the closure caps, whereby the clamp may be used, after being partially passed through an aperture in the caps, as a means for holding and guiding the rod end through such aperture in the placement of the caps to position against the ends of the fabric roll.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of one end of a fabric roll and closure cap for the end thereof with the securing means therefor, as taken on the line ll of Fig. 2, the dotted lines showing the manner of applying and securing the cap to place.
Figure 2 is an end view showing the cap as applied and secured to the end of the fabric roll.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view, partly in section, showing the cap connecting rod, closure cap and clamping member in operative position.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a roll of fabric or other material having a hollow portion or central opening 2 extending the length thereof, one end of such a roll only being shown and. considered necessary for the purposes of making a clear and full disclosure of the invention. In actual practice an end cap 3 is applied to each end of the fabric roll. Each end cap is provided with a central projecting portion -lfitting into the hollow center 2 of the roll, and a flat body or flange portion 5 fitting against the end of the roll so as to cover and protect the edges of the fabric against damage in the shipment and handling of the same. The projecting or dished portion 4 of the cap is adapted to snugly fit within the hollow portion of the roll in order to prevent lateral displacement thereof with respect to the roll.
The end caps 3 are held against endwise displacement by a rod 6 connecting the end caps which passes through the hollow portion of the roll, and the present improvements relates more particularly to the means employed for effecting the attachment be tween the ends of the rod and the caps and for exerting a pull on the caps in the direction of each other, whereby the caps will be firmly held against the ends of the roll. It will be obvious that for all practical purposes one end of the rod 6 may be connected with one of the end caps 3 in any suitable manner, and that a pull exerted on the rod through means bearing on the other end cap will tend to draw said caps in the direction of each other, hence a single means only for effecting such drawing action is shown and described, although, if preferred, like means may be employed at both ends of the roll. To one end of the rod is linked a clamping member 7, wlhich preferably consists of a sheet metal stamping having an elongated. slot 8 disposed to one side of the longitudinal center line thereof, and
having its ends 9 rounded shown. The end of the rod 6 passes through the slot 8 and is bent parallel with the rod portion 10, whereby the clan'iping member is held on edge with respect to the rod end and remains free to be shifted with relation to the rod end within the limits of the slot 8. as in the manner shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 2, the end cap 3 is provided with a central circular perforation 1]. through which the clamping member will pass endwise, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and from which it will be seen that by partially passing the clamping member through said perforation and then gripping the end of the clamping member with the fingers. the cap may be applied to place on the end of the roll and the clamping member made to serve as means. tor giiiiding the end ot the rod through said perforation, which greatly l acilitates the assen'ihly of the parts in their operative relation To edect the clamping action the free end oi the clamping member is forced toward the end can which produces a canm'iing action between the rod and the end cap. therelrr imparting a pull or draw upon the rod and a bi ing pressure upon the end cap, with the result that both caps will be drawn into iirm contact with the ends of the roll.

With the rod, end cap, and clamping member in operative position. as shown n Fig. 3, the bent over end 01. the rod reenters the perforation 11 in the end cap. with the result that the edge of the perforation closely encompasses such hook-shaped portion, and prevents a straightening out of such hook portion under a pull exerted thereon in the operation 01 the clamping nien'ibe-r 7 which it otherwise could not. resist, and especially so if the roll should be su iected to a violent endwise impact by being dropped from an elevation, whereby a smaller gage wire will etl ectively serve as a. rod than would otherwise permit and with a resultant material sa ing in the quantitative production of the rods.
it will be seen that my device is simple and etlicient for its purposes, and that the same may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from a roll.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a roll having a central opening therethrough, of end caps adapted to engage the ends of the roll, a connection between said end caps including a rod extending through the roll and the end caps, and a cam member cooperating with one end of said rod and one of the ends 0 ps for exerting a pull on the rod and a bearing pressure on said cap.
2. The combination with a roll having a central opening therethrough, of end caps adapted to engage the ends of the roll, means tor connecting said end caps including a rod extei'iding through the roll and the end caps, a bar linked with one end of s rod having a slot disposed longitudinal of and to one side of the longitudinal axis thereof through which the rod end is looped, said bar when folded against the cap exerting a pull on the rod and a bearing pressure against the cap.
3. The combination with a roll having a central opening therethrough, of end caps adapted to engage the ends of the roll, means (aninecting said end caps extending through the rolh and means having a camming action cooperating with one end of said cap connecting means to effect a pull on both end caps in the direction oi each other.
