BOOKBINDER Filed June l1, 1924 Ill ||lllllllllllllllllllllll"Il"IFIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMUI|||Illlllllllllllllllllllll4 @um M N ENTOR, auf-rg' Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
B OOKBINDER.
Application filed .Tune 11,
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that ll, THEoDonE J. Davila, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Bookbinders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is particularly applicable to loose leaf check books but is also applicable to other forms of loose leaf books wherein a plurality of interchangeable sheets may be bound in superposed relation upon their left hand edges and simultaneously a number of other sheets may be bound .f on their right hand edges, thus leaving exposed a right hand sheet and a left hand sheet when the book is open, each of said exposed sheets being an uppermost sheet in a series of superposed sheets. ln this way the book keeper when he opens the book binder of my invention has before him a right hand sheet which may for example be a series of blank checks and a left hand sheet which may with advantage be a record of the checks drawn, the purpose for which they are drawn and any other information in connection with the transaction covered by the said checks.
By referring to the accompanying draw ing my invention will be made clear.
Fig. 1 is a perspective of the binding device of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of Fig. 4 on the line H-Il thereof.
Fig. 3 is similar to Fig. 2 except that the binding strip has been actuated to clamp both the right and left leaves in place.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line IV-TV of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a book made up of right and left loose leaves secured in the binder of my invention.
Throughout the gures similar numerals refer to identical parts.
The binder device consists of a body portion indicated by the numeral 1, having a top member 2, an intermediate or partition member 22 and a bottom member 23 thus forming in section a sinuous structure. In the top 2 are apertures as 3, 4, 5 and 6,

suitably spaced to correspond with upset portions 7, 8, 9 and 10, respectively of the slide bar 11. A greater number of these apertures and upset port-ions may be pr vided as in long binders, if desired.
The slide bar 11 carrying upsets 7, 8, 9, 10 and posts 20, 21, is loosely held beneath member 2 by means of a slot and pin connect-ion 30 as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and is hinged at 12 to the linger-operable member 13 60 adapted to withdraw the slide bar l1 into the full line position of Fig. 1, or when the finger-operable member 13 is depressed to force the upset portions to ride under top member 2 and thus to compress bar 11 65 into the position shown in Fig. 3, whereupon the bar 11 binds one set of sheets against the partition 22 and another set of oppositely extending sheets are held by the posts 20, 21, against the bottom 23. The posts 20, 21 operate freely through slots, 14, 15 in member 22.
rlhe member 11 forms a top and member 22 forms a base for the sheets 17 and a top for the sheets 18 which rest on the bottom 75 23 so that when the sheets are inserted between 22 and 23 and between 11 and 22 and the bar 11 depressed by depressing the finger member, the sheets 17 are clamped between the bar 11 and the member 22 and the sheets 80 18 are clamped between the member 22 and bottom 23, and the relatively rigid bottom strip 23 thus binding both sets of sheets, one set 17 of which are now exposed on the right hand side of the binder and sheets 18 which are now exposed on the left hand side of the binder as indicated in Fig. 6.
I claim:
1. A binder device comprising a cover and a body member of sinuous section having a top portion, a bottom portion and an intermediate portion, a strip with a plurality of upset portions registering at one position of said strip with corresponding openings in the top portion of the body member, said '95 strip positioned between the said top and intermediate portions, a plurality of posts on said strip extending through openings in said intermediate portion and means for longitudinally shifting the strip whereby 5 ends of said the upset portions are forced out of regstry with seid openings and the strip is clepressed to clamp sheets between the strip and intermediate portions nd between the posts and said bottom por tion.
2. A'binder device es set forth in claim l Where-in there are upset portions on said strip on euch side of seid posts and on the opposite side oi said strip therefrom.
A binder device as set fori-l1 in elztim l in Combination with a plurali@` of blank .cheeks elen'iped ou one side ol' smid bodyv member and e plurality oi record sheets on the other side of seid member.
