To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. LUCEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cit of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of llinois, have linvented certain new and `useful Improvements in Indexing. De# vices for Slicing Machines, of which the following' isla specification. f
My invention relates to new and usefu improvements in indexingd'evices for slicing.
machines.
This is a division of Iny prior application for indexing devices for slicing machines, filed June 5, 1922, Serial No. 566,067 which has eventuated into Patent No. 1,489,580, dated April 8, 1924.
With the indexing devices now in use it requires a careful and tedious manipulation, and it is therefore almostimpossible to change the index'properly while the machine isvslicing.v v-It is my main object to provide indexing means for regulating the feed mechanism, in Order to cut slices of the desired thickness instantaneously and positively bythe mere pressure of the inger, and during the slicing operation.
`Another object isto' provide an indexing device comprising a plurality of indexing keys either one of which may be yoperated toactuate-the adjusting bar, independently of the other keys.
These' and other Objects and advantages will become a parent from the following description ta en in connection with the drawing, in which, 4.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the form of .indexing `device which forms this divisional ap lication. ig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical view on line 2-2 of Fig.l 1;
Fig. 8 is a vertical cross-sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 `is a vertical cross-sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig/2; and
Fig. 6 isan enlarged detail sectional view of the index key used -n this form of my invention.
The form of invention presented in this divisional application differs chiefly from the other forms disclosed in the arent case, above identified, in this, that 1n the form sectional ing the member a different distance. This form of construction comprises a housing 70' provided with a bracket 71 for mounting said device on base 21 of a slicing machine, whlch machine may be of the type illustrated lin the parent case, above identified,
tending from` a reciprocating table 73 and carrying a pawl wheel 74 which is intermittently moved by a pawl `75 and its attached pawl leverr76, which is swingable on the axisvof thepawl wheel 74. A spring 77 holds the pawl on the pawl wheel, and a Aspring 78 holds vlever7 6 in its retracted position against the stop arm 79, which extends from the bracket 72. f The adjusting member in the present form of indexin device is in the shape of a rectangular p ate `80, `sl-idably mounted on thebottom of the housing 0, and having an extension 81 in the form of a barfor engaging and actuating the pawl lever 76. Said plate is providedwith al plurality of sets or rows o cam elements, which in the present form are shown in the sha e of openin s 82, each ofv which openings las a bevele y side wall or side portion 83, in the direction of the lfeed mechanism. The degree of slant and therefore .the length of the bevel of said side .portions gradually varying from one end of the plate to the other, andv from one side of the plate tothe other, as shown in the drawin s. A plurality ofl similarly constructed eys compris-- ing stems 84, are similarly mounted through Vopening inthe top of said housing, and are provided with suitablel marked or numbered heads` 85, above said housing. Sleeves 86 are. fastened to said stems `insideof said housing, Aand ou s 87. are slidably mounted Onthe lower'ends to receive said sleeves therein, the springs 88 normally preventing `said sleeves and `cups from telescoping. The cups are seated in a plate 89 .mounted in the housing above the adjusting member 80. The keys are .arranged in rows, and directly above and in position to en age the cam elements or beveled side portions 83 of the opening 82, and alongside `each row of keys a rod 90 and which is provided with a bracket 72 ex-l of said stems in position `in order to releaseany key that may have been depressed. n
In operation, when any of the keys 84 is depressed the beveled flange 93 moves the finger 92 of arm 92 outward, whereupon s ring 98 attached to the cross rod 94 and t e housing moves said cross rod 94, the longitudinal rod 90 and thereby the respective arm 92 and its finger 92 over said flange 93 to lock said key in depressed position. The depression of said key moves its lower end over the corresponding'beveled portion 83 andmoves the adjusting member horizontally in accordance with the horizontal distance of said beveled portion, in the direction ofthe feed mechanism and into rits adjusted position, beveled flanges on the keys and fingers-'on the rods as above described, the depression of either key will release any other key that may be set, thus providing an adjusting de- `vice or indexing device in which only one key will be operated at a time.
In using my indexing device on the well known types of slicing machines, that are already on the market, the usual index lbar and actuating `means thereof are removed from the machine'and my .indexing device is attached to the machine in place of said customary indexing mechanism.
It is apparent froml the above disclosure that with the use of my indexing device, the feed mechanismis properly operable while the machine is slicing, and immediately and positively, by actuating either one of a number of index kevs, by merely depressing such key, without effecting any of the other keys. `and also that the indexing device will be modified to fit the various forms of slicing machines; whereas in indexing devices now on the markettheindex actuating mechanism cannot be operated properly. while tlie machine is slicing because the change ofthe indexing device requires a gradual turn or"v` gradual movement of 'the indexing mechanism, from one indexing number or position over the adjacent numbers or positions to arrive at the desired indexing position, that is, the indexing mechanism must move over' intermediate positions to arrive at the position desired, and therefore the machine will be cutting slices of varying thickness during the change of the indexing mechanism;
and by means of thel by Letters Patent is,-
