A dry sand core is coated with graphite and after having been heated in a suitable oven so the sand core is hot it is inserted in the mold.- The molten metal is then poured very hot and when the sand core is still hot. Before the core is driven or knocked out it is filled with water from the top of a temperature depending upon the character and depth of the chill desired, cold water being used when it is desired to produce a very substantial' depth and relatively hard chill and cold water being used as a lesser degree of these qualities is desired. After the chilling and hardening has been effected by filling or treating the sand core with'water from the top, the water beingof a temperature corresponding to the effects desired to be produced the core is driven or knocked out and the casting or sleeve is completed.

water is distributed throughout the sand of the core, whereby a uniform and thorough chill 'of the casting or sleeve'is effected.
This method will chill a sleeve of threefourths of an inch in diameter straight through.
By producing a casting with this method and with a core of this character the interior of castings and the interior or the inside of the cylinders or sleeves are hardened or chilled to any desired'degree to provide a better wearing surface and to generally improve the casting-or the sleeves. This result is largely efi'e'ctive by reason of the fact that the metalishardened by the peculiar steps of the process and instrumentalities utilizedin connection therewith in such a singular manner that the strength-of the casting or sleeve is so enhanced and the metal itself is imparted such a quality as to prolong the life of the casting and to provide and graphite coated sand core therein, pouring the metal while the core is hot and filling the sand core With water of a"certain temperature from the top prior to this disassociation of the core from the metal. is preferably constructed in theimain of dry 45 from the top prior to disassociation of thesand core from the casting or sleeve all as and for the purposes set forth.
