RECORDING MECHANISM.
Application filed March 15, 1922.
To (JZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. QuARLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recording Mechanisms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others sk lled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to recording mechanisms.
Among the objects of my invention are To provide means for periodically oper ating a bail to press a stylus or other marker upon a record. 2
To provide electric means for operating a bail to press a stylus or other marker upon a traveling record and an automatic circuit breaker for controlling the operation of the electric means independently of the operation 01' the rcording mechanism.
The drawing shows diagrammatically a register equipped with my improved means for operating the bail thereof.
In the drawing 5 is a spool having the paper 6 wound thereupon, the latter passing over the idler roller "7, the recording drum 8 and between the driver drum J and the pressure roller 10.
The means for supporting the various drums and rollers and for operating the same form no part of my invention.
The paper 6 which is formed in ribbon may also be replaced by a disc of paper.
11 is an inked ribbon, carbon paper or other suitable element for making a mark upon the paper 6 when it is pressed upon by the stylus 12; or the ribbon 11 may be dispensed with and the stylus 12 may be replaced by a pencil, a pen or other suitable marking appliance.-
The stylus 12 is placed on the end of a spring arm 13 and the latter is revolubly mounted on the vertical pivot 14 so that it may have motion thereabout in a horizontal plane. The arm 13 rests normally in the position shown in the drawing but it is formed of spring material so that it can be bent slightly in order to bring the stylus 12 upon the ribbon 11.
The arm 13 is to be connected by means of the pull rod 15 with any suitable mechanism that will move the stylus 12 in relation to a pressure, a potential, a current or any Serial No. 543,842.

16 represents a bail shaped and located so that it will be just above the stylus 12 throughout the range of movement of the latter and sa d bail is'mounted on the end of the lever 1'? which is iulcrumed at 18 and connected by the rod 19 to the armature 20, the latter being pivotally mounted at 21 and its relation to the armature core 22 being adjusted by the screw 23. The screw 23 is mounted in the base 2% aiiiXed to the frame 25 of the register which also supports in any approved manner the pivots 21, 18 and 14, the core 22 and the pintles of the various drums and rolls. A coil 26 is wound about the core 22 and one terminal of said coil is connected as at 27 to any suitable source of electricity and the other of said terminals is connected to the contact screw 28, the latter is mounted '11 an insulating member 29, the screw 28 makes contact with the contact spring 30 and the latter is clamped between the insulating member 29 and the distance piece 31 by the screw 32.
An expansion wire 33 extends from the screw 32 to the spring 30 and it is to be noted that the latter is s'nuous in form for a purpose hereinafter explained. The screw 32 is connected as at 3% to a source of electricity and it is also connected to one terminal of the heating coil 35, the other terminal of said coil be ng connected to the screw 28. The heating coil 35 surrounds the expansion wire 38.
The operation of my improved register is as follows The terminals 27 and 3% are to be connected to a source of electricity, either alternating or dire t; it the latter, the core 22 and armature 20 are preferably laminated to avoid the development of Foucault currents therein.
The parts being in the positions shown in the figure, it is evident that t 1e current will flow from the terminal 27 through the coil 22, then to the screw 28, then through the heating coil 35, then to the screw 32 and then to the terminal 34.
The resistance of the coil 35 is so high that there will not be sutiicient current flowing through the coil 28 to energize the coil 22 to attract the armature 20.
The current flowing through the ('oil 35, however, heats up and expands the wire 33 which, owing to the sinuous shape of the Ill] spring 30, allows it to make contact with the screw 28. WVhen the spring 30 makes contact with the screw 28, the coil is short circuited and sufiicient current flows through the coil 26 to enable it to energize the core 22 sufficiently to attract the armature 20. lVhen the armature 20 is attracted, it moves the bail 16 downwardly and presses the stylus 12 against the ribbon 11. When the coil 35 is short cireuited its heating effect is terminated, it and the expansion wire 33 cool oft, the latter contracts and removes the spring 30 from contact with the screw 28 again inserting the resistance of the coil 35 in circuit with the coil 26 and this permitting the armature 20 to drop and remove the bail 16 from the stylus 12. \Vhen the bail 16 is removed from the stylus 12, it is evident that the latter is free to be moved in any direction in a horizontal plane by the pull rod 15.
Thus it will be seen that I provide a simple, cheap, powerful and eificient means for operating the bail 16 which is entirely independent of the mechanism of the register.
By operating the bail independently of the mechanism of the register, I am enabled. to make the latter very much more delicate and provide for greater accuracy in its operation.
Vh le I have shown a circuit breaker 0perated by a hot wire, it is to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to th s form of operation, for many changes may be made in the structure indicated without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. In a register, the combination with a stylus, a record, means for moving said stylus, means for moving said record and a source of electricity, of a bail for producing a pressure of said stylus upon said record, electrical means for operating said bail and a contact maker comprising an expansible wire for intermittently connecting said means to said source.
2. In a register, the combination with a stylus, a record, means for moving said stylus, means for moving said record and a source of electricity, of a bail for producing pressure of said stylus upon said record, electrical means for operating said bail and a contact maker comprising an expansible wire and means for heating said wire for intermittently connecting said means to said source.
3, In a register, the combination with a stylus, a record, means for moving said stylus, means for moving said record and a source of electricity, of a bail for producing a pressure of said stylus upon said record, electrical means for operating said bail and an autoniatically operated contact maker for intermittently connecting said means to said source, said maker comprising fixed and movable contacts, an cxpansible element connected to said movable contact and means for heating said element.

In a register, the combination with a stylus, a record, means for moving said stylus, means for moving said record and a source of electricity, of a bail for producing a pressure of said stylus upon said record, a magnet core and coil thereupon having one end connected to said source, an armature for said core connected to said bail, a fixed contact connected to the other end of said coil, a mo'able contact connected to said source and an expansible element connected to said movable contact, and a heating coil having its ends connected to said contacts.
