UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL EDWARD HENNESSY, OE MILWVAUKEE. VII-SCONSIN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE FISK RUBBER COMPANY, 033 CHICOIEE FALLS, MASSACHU- SETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
VULCANIZING APPARATUS.
Application filed August 19, 1921/ To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL Enwnnn HEN- NESSY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the countyof Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vulcanizing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vulcanization apparatus and the principal object thereof is to provide new and improved apparatus of this character. In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof I have shown, for purposes of illus tration, one form which my invention may assume. In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of this illustrative apparatus.
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view of the mold of Figure 1, while Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view of this mold.
The apparatus disclosed herein is particularly adapted to control the application of heat to articles at vulcanization thereof and comprises a heater 11 containing a plurality of molds such as the molds 12 and itself comprising a shell 13 provided at its upper end with a top ring 14 and supported by a heater base not shown. The top ring 14 is adapted to receive a cover 15 while the base carries a ram cylinder 18 enclosing a ram 19 which is provided with a ram table 20. I
The heater cover 15 is constructed to interrupt communication between the space 38 within the inner periphery of the molds 12 and the space 39 outside the molds and at the same time to afford free communication between the inner space 38 and the exterior of the heater and in the embodiment herein illustrated the communication between the spaces 38 and 39 is interrupted by an annular plate 16 carried by the lower face of the heater cover 15, unitary therewith, and of such size as to overlie the molds 12, while communication between the inner space 38 and the exterior of the heater is afforded by the large central opening 21 in the heater cover 15. The ram table is also constructed to segregate the spaces 38 and 39 and this segregation is accomplished herein by a plate 28 secured to the table 20, unitary therewith, and of such size Serial No. 493,590.
as to overlie the molds 12. The segregation of the chambers is completed by so constructing the molds 12, heater cover 15, and ram table 20, that a tight joint is provided between each mold and the adjacent body and in the drawings the upper face 31 of each mold 12 and of the plate 28 is shown as provided with a dovetail annular recess carrying a packing ring 32 having a dovetail portion 33 adapted to seat in the recess 30 and a protruding portion 34 adapted to engage the adjacent surface. Each upper face is also provided with a second ring 35 similar to the ring 32 but segmental and inserted only to balance the strains imposed upon the parts by the ram action.
From the above description it will be understood that the chamber 38 is segregated from the chamber 39 but is freely open to the exterior.
Under certain conditions I may desire to retard the speed at which the ram advances and I have shown herein one arrangement by which such retardation may conveniently be accomplished. This arrangement comprises a duct 40 leading from the ram cylinder 18 to the center part of a threeway valve 41 which on one side exhausts at 42 and on the other side is connected by a duct 43 to a source of fluid pressure 44. Interposed in the duct 43 is a unit 45 having a restricted opening and shunted by the bypass 46.
It will be understood that with the bypass 46 closed fluid entering the cylinder 18 must pass through the restriction in the unit 45 and therefore is retarded to thus retard the upward movement of the ram. The discharge is rapid and a rapid advance may be secured by opening the by-pass 46..
The description herein covers but one embodiment of my invention and is illustrative only and my invention is not limited thereto.
I claim:
1. In combination, a heater, an annu ar article therein, and means adapted to form a fluid tight separation between the space within the inner periphery of said article and the space between said article and said heater without materially restricting the communication between the inner space and the exterior of the heater.
