IMPROVEMENT IN MICROSCOPES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,746, dated J une 9, 1874; application May 11,1874.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN JACOB BAUscH, of the city of Rochester, county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Microscopes, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to produce a compact and portable microscope, which, by the construction and arrangement of certain parts thereof, is easily made ready for use, and which, when not in'use, can be packed in suoha small compass that it can be conveniently carried in the pocket, and is for this reason specially adapted to the purposes of botanists and other naturalists and investigators.

I attain these ends in a very simple manner, as follows: The case for containing the lenses and other parts of the microscope consists of a small box, the lid of which slides into its place and is held by means of the well-known contrivance known as tongue and `grooves, as is clearly shown in the drawings. rlhis lid is so formed that it slides into its place whichever side may be-up, and to it one of the ends of the box is strongly and permanently fastened. This end O serves to support in a rm manner the stem D, which carries the lenses 1 1, stage G, &c., and at the same time :its removal from the box allows the light to fall freely on the mirror H.. The stem D is hinged at its lower end, so that it may be either laid down in the groove formed for it in the lid or held upright by being pressed into a groove in the before-mentioned end of the box, and in both these positions it is firmly held in place by means of the button E, which acts as an eccentric clamp.

Vhen the microscope is required for use, the lid of the box is drawn out7 the steln l) turned up and fastened, the lenses, stage, duc., arranged as shown in the drawing, and the box and lid are put together as there exhibited.

Vhen it i's desirable to pack the instrument away, the lenses, Ste., are slipped oif the stem and packed in the box. The stem itself is turned down and held in the groove in the lid by means ofthe button E, after which the lid, having first been turned over, may be slid into its place, so as to etfectually and neatly close both the top and the end of the box.

Dissecting-needles K and L are fitted into grooves formed in the lid, and having a shape which gives a cross-section that is a little more than a semicircle. rllhis shape, while it allows the needles to slide into place when moved endwise, prevents their being lifted out, and they are thus securely held without increasing the size of the instrument, While at the same time they are in convenient position, and can be easily drawn out for use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure b f Let- The combination of the box A with the re versible lid B, said lid having one end of the box secured to it at right angles and forming a support for the stem l), the whole being arranged in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
