E. L. ROTTMAN LICENSE PLATE HOLDER Filed May. 27 1924 l N ve/vfor Patents Dec. 2, i924.
ERNEST L. RGTTIVEAN, OFSALT LAKE CITY. UTAH.
LIOENSE-FLATE HOLDER.
Application filed May 27, 1924-.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnNnsT L. Berri [Are a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful improvements in License- Plate Holders of which the following is a specification.
filly invention relates to number plates on automobiles, and has for its object to provide a number plate holder which is secured on the radiator of automobile and on which may be fastened the number plate and a flag standard, and which will also provide a trimming for the front end corner of an automobile. v
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, as described in the specification forming a part of the application and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings in which I have shown the best and most substantial embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an engine hood with my device in place thereon. Figure 2 is a front elevation of the radiator with my device in place thereon. Figure 3 is a vertical section of the device on line 3-3 of Figure 2. Figure 4 is a plan view of the device.
lhe device consists of a metal plate A, having portions bent at right angles thereto to form foot pieces B, which foot pieces are perforated to receive the bolts 1 with nuts 2 which are screwed on said bolts to fasten the device rigidly in place. The medial portion of said plate A is bent or curved to fit closely the hood of the radiator, and has an opening 3 therein to receive the inlet pipe of the radiator. The said plate A has an inwardly turned flange 4i thereon to fit over the corner of the radiator and across the top of said flanged portion the flange is wider, forming a horizontal section 5. Metal straps 6 and 7 are fastened to the strap A near the upper portion of the flanges 4t to form U-shaped supports for the number Serial No. 716,120.
plate, and have elongated slots 9 to receive short bolts for securing the number plate in position. The said straps 6 and 7 extend forwardly of the flanges 4 and 5 in order that the number plate will not be near enough to the radiator to interfere with the air circulation through the radiator. Portions of each end of the said strap 6 are bent outwardly to form standard loops 8. The device is made of metal and nickelplated or otherwise painted to prevent its tarnishing and to add to the appearance of the automobile. On the inner faces of the device where it touches the radiator hood pieces of felt 10 or other fibre are secured to prevent any tendency to rattle or wear the radiator. The'standard S of the flag or other emblem is to be inserted through the said loops 8 with its bottom or lower portion against the said strap 7 to hold it in position and vertical.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure Letters Patent and claim 1. A device for securing number plates on automobiles, comprising a flat metal plate shaped to conform with the front corners of a radiator; and horizontally disposed meta-l straps secured to said metal plate and with the medial portion spaced in front of the radiator on which it is used and adapted to hold a license number plate in position.
2. A device for securing license number plates on automobiles, comprising a fiat metal plate shaped to conform with a radiator; an inwardly turned flange thereon, the said plate and flange adapted to fit closely the corner of a radiator of an automobile, and having an opening in said plate to receive the inlet of aradiator; legs on the lower end of said plate to secure it in place; two slotted ll-shaped straps secured at their ends to said plate and spaced in front of said flange with portions of the upper of said straps bent to form loops to receive a flag standard.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
ERNEST L. ROTTMAN.
