HARRY V. MELICK, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
COLLAR FASTENER.
Application ledvNovember 26, 1923. Serial No. 677,077.
T all 107mm t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY V. MELICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Chio, have invented new and useful Im provements inv Collar Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.,
This invention relates to securilng devices, particularly to means for fastening a collar upon the neck band of a shirt, and has for its object they provision of a novel fastener which is designed to be vpermanent-ly carried by the neck'band of the shirt and so constructed that a collar may be quickly and easily engaged thereupon, one distinct ad vantage being that use of the ordinary collar :button is avoided, it being well known that it is a common matter for the ordinary collar button to drop out during the operation of engaging a collar upon it, thus causing annoyance and loss of time.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed that it .may be folded downl flat against the nec-k band to avoid being in the way and beingobroken or torn -od when the shirt is laundered.
v19in additional object is the provision of a collar fastener which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture. leasy to apply and use, positive in action, efficient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and i1lustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of the blank from. which the fastener is made, this view showingv parts thereof,
igure 2 is a (perspectlve view of the base y for the insertion of the post, c
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the post in place,
Figure 4 is an elevation .ofthe device 4 mounted at the front of a shirt band,
Figure 5 is` a horizontal section therethrough, on the line 5--5 of Figure 4 Figure Gf' is a similar viewI showing the post folded down Hat,
Figure 7 is an elevation of the fastener located at the back of a neck band;
Referring more particularly to the drawing and especially Figure 1. I have shown the base of the device as .formed from an elongated strip 10 of metal, which strip is formed near its ends with transverse dcpressions 11 and 12, the latter of which is intersected by spaced parallel cuts 13. The central portion of the depression 12 is removed where it is intersected by the cuts 13 so as to define an opening 14:. This blank is adapted to be folded over upon itself along the line 15 in Figure 1 and to be pressed so that both ends will lie together, the depressions 11 and 12 then mating to form a bearing for a purpose to be described. The tongue' 16 defined by the cuts 13 is bent upwardly or outwardly with respect to the body of the strip to define an opening` for a purpose which will be eX-' plained.
The above operation defines the base 17 in conjunction with which I make use of a post 18 which has a somewhat enlarged head 19 and which is formed or otherwise provided 'with laterally extending trunnions 20 which are elongated or elliptical in e cross section and which are oset somewhat with respect to the body of the post to define a heel 21. In assembling -this post structureupon the base, the head 19 is insorted from the underside kof the base through the opening made by bending the tongue 16 outwardly, and the post is then turned partly to bring the trunnions into the depressions 12, after which the tongue 16 is pressed down again into its initial position in the same planewith the base, and the bottom portion of the base folded flat against the underside of the top portion and soldered at its ends. The device is intended to be installed at the front of a neck band or `shirt band A which is formed at one end with a pocket 22 formed by stitching the fabric and within this pocket is engaged the base 17 of the devi'ce, it being obvious that the pocket cannot be completed until afterthe base is in position. This pocket is furthermore so constructed as to avoid any inside seams which might chafe or irritate the wearers neck. When the shirt is being laundered it is intended that the post be swung down to lie flat against theband so as not to be in the way and so as not to be caught by the iron with which the shirt is pressed or ironed.
I When the post is so swung the elongated formation of the trunnions will cause them to be clamped between the resilient sides of the base so that the position will be maintained until the post is actually and forcibly moved into its opposite position extending at right angles to the base. Y
In the use of the device the post is swung soI as to extend straight outwardly from the neck band, the heel 21 bearing against the outer face of the base for preventing the post from swinging bevond the right angularly extending position. The opposite end of the neck .band has its button hole B first engaged upon the post after which the collar is simply hooked onto the post.
For use at. the back of the shirt the arrangement is exactly the same except that the post 18 may be shorter.
From the foregoing description and a. study of the ldrawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simpl constructed, and easily used collar fastening device Which possesses many advantages when compared with the ordinary collar button especially as it cannot become lost. Naturally, any desired finish may be provided for the article, though as a matter of fact it is preferable that all parts thereof be plated with gold or other material or else be constructedthroughout of some material which will not corrode either from perspiration or from the'lliquids and chemicals used in` laundering. A
While I have shown and described the preferredembodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the `right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts aswill not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A collar securing device comprising a securing member adapted to be permanently mounted upon` the neck band of a shirt and including a base` a post pivoted thereon and adapted to have the other end of the neck band and the ends of a collar engaged thereon, said post being swingable to lie selectively fiat against the neck band or to extend outwardly at rightangles thereto, and a free ended tongue on the base for holding the post in either selected position.
2. A fastener of the character described comprising a base formed from a single strip of resilient material formed near its ends with transverse depressions and provided at one end with cuts intersecting one depression, the material between the cuts being removed at the depression intersected by the cuts, said cuts defining a tongue initially bent awa)v from the strip. and a post provided at one end with an enlarged head and having its other end carrying trunnions fitting Within the depressions which mate when the strip is folded upon itself, said trunnions being offset with respect tothe post to define a heel engageable with the base for limiting swinging movement of the post in one direction, the post being swingable to lie flat against the base and said trunnions being elongated in cross section whereby the long axes will extend transversely of the base for retaining the post in swung position lying against the base.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HARRY V. MELICK.
