J. BERG WEATHERPROOF CONTAINER Filed Aug. 9; 1923 7/ WW MFG/m u $1 2k [Re-2g B A Aid;
Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
WEATHERP ROOF CONTAINER.
Application filed August 9, 192a. Serial no. 656,538.
To all whom it may concern: Be it knownthat I, JOSEPH BERG, a citlzen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weatherproof Containers, of which -theiollowing isa specification. y e
The present invention relates to trunks or boxes, and particularly to trunks or boxes which may be carried in a suitable position on automobiles, and one object of the 'invention is to provide a trunk or box of this character which may be directly exposed to the inclemency of the weather and adapted to prevent injury -to,its contents therefrom. Anotherobject is to provide a trunk or box' of the character described which is of light weight, compact, strong and durable.
A feature of the invention resides in the hinged connection of the lid to the body portion of the trunk or box, whereby when the lid is in .normal position entrance. of rain or snow into the trunk or box is prevented." Another-feature of the invention resides in the lid having water tight hinged connection to the body of the trunk or box, the lid being self supported when-in open 'position in the horizontal plane of the upper edge of the body portion without th use of straps or braces, and out of the way and free from liability to fall into closing position.
I attain the above objects and such other objects as may appear during the subjoined description by way of example of one of the possible embodiments of the invention, shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which Fig- 'ure 1, is a perspective view, the lid being in open position;
Figure 2, is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the lid being in closing position. Figure 3, is a fragmentary rear view of the upper portion of the trunk or box, the lid being in closing position.
v Figure 4, is a detail view of a corner cap and supporting'bracket appurtenant to the hinged connection of the lid to the body portion, and
Figure 5, 1s a fragmentary sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Similar. reference characters denote similar parts throughout the several views.
e invention comprises in its main parts or elements the body member generally de Iroioted by 10 and the lid generally denoted The body member 10 is made of any suitable light weight, strong and rigid material, preferably metaL; and is of box form, having the front and rear sides 12 and 13, ends 14 and 15, and bottom 16'. The body member 10 is reduced in length and width near its top, as at m, to provide a shoulder or ledgev 17 which extends along the front and ends of the member, the distance on the body member from the upper side of the shoulder 17 to the-to of the member being substantially the depth of the lid 11 at the front and sides thereof. The body portion 10 at. the top of its rear side 13is curved inwardly, as at 18, Figs. 1 and 2, for the length of the rear side, for the purposelater stated.
The body member 10 at each of its four lower corners is provided with the protective corner caps 19, suitably secured, as by rivets, to the body member. The body member 10, at the intersections of its front side and ends near its top, is provided with protectiv'e corner caps, generally denoted by 2 each ofwhich comprises the angular securing plates 21- and the angular plate extensions 22, there being shoulders 23 formed between the securing plates 21 and plate ex tensions 22 which provide on the under side of these corner caps depressed portions adapted to engage or rest upon the shoulder v 17 of the body member 10, when the corner,
caps are suitably secured as by rivets to the body member, the plate extensions 22 lying snugly against the front and sides of the body member and providing guiding surfaces for the lid 11 when moved to closing position, the plate extensions 22 in length being the distance on the body member from the shoulder 1.7 to the top of said member.
For cooperating in hingedly connecting the lid 11 to the body member 10, the corner caps and supporting brackets, generally denoted by 24, are provided.
Each of the corner caps and supporting brackets 24 comprises the angular securing plates 25 and the supporting bracket 26 forming part of one of the securing plates 25 and lying in the same plane therewith.
The securing plates 25 of the corner caps and supporting brackets 24 are secured, as
byrivets, to an end and the rear side of the the securing plates being flush with the top of theshoulder 17' and theends of the supporting brackets 26 extending slightly abeve the *to of the body member, the supportlng brac ets 26 .thus being arranged in opposed relation on the ends ofthe body member atthe'rear and projecting slightly above the top of the body member, and being spaced away from the .outer faces of the ends of the body member by the width of'theshoulder 17.
Each of the supporting brackets 26 has I rigidly secured to its upper end at right angle thereto the stub shaft 27, the purpose of which is .later'stated.
The lid IL is of the same material as the body member 10'and comprises the front side 28, ends 29 and and coverin portion lid when it is in closing position.
31, the lid being open at its rear, t e terms.
' the supporting brackets 26 of the corner caps 24. v y
' The lid 11 isprovided onthe' free edge of a the covering portion 31 with the u turned or rolled hollow, substantially cylin rical portion 32 which is adjacent to and received in the inwardly curved portion 18 of the body member 10, and v cooperates therewith for providing an anti-weather-device, and also cooperates with the stub shafts-2710f the combined cornercaps' and supporting brackets 26 for providing hinged-connection between the body member 10 and lid 11. The lid 11 at the-intersection of'itsfront side 28, ends 29 and 30 and covering portion 31, is provided with corner caps such as 33. The bottom 16 of the bod member 10 is offset as at 34, Fig. 5', there y providing aflange and permitting attachment by any,"
' suitable means to thebottom 160i the wear lid 11-, the stub s afts 27, prior to securingthe corner caps and suppo 'tlng brackets 24 to the body member 10, areinserted through oft strips'35 of hard wood or other suitable material;
For assemblin the body member-10 and holes, not seen, but readily understood, arrangfd' in the lower rear corners of the ends the lid; the corner caps. and supporting brackets 24 then being secured to the body member 10, as before described, and hinged connection provided between the lid and body-member. f
When'the lid is moved to covering position the cylindrical portion 32 of the h d 32 is edge or shoulder 36 of the inwardly curved e lid, and are received in-the ends of the substantially cylindrical portion 32 of.
brought into the position relative to the inwardly curved portion 18 of the body member shown in Fig. 2, and entrance of rain or snow between the lid and body member is prevented, the overlappin or nesting feature of the lid also condu'cmg to keep the bod member rain and snow proof.
Vghen the lid 11 is .in uncovering position the cylindrical portion 32 bears upon the portion 18 ofthe body member 10, and is thus I sup orted in the horizontal plane of the upper e ge of the bod member.
" Having thus descri ed my invention, it
shouldbe understood that there may be modifications thereof and variations therein without departin from the spirit of the inventionorexcee ing the scope of the appended claims.
