i To all whom, it may concern! I Be it known that I, Osoan'JUNoonnN, a
citizenof the UnitedStates, and a resident of Schenectady, county of Schenectady, and,
State of New: York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in -Elastic- Fluid Turbines, of whtich the rfollowingis a specification. Y i I In the constructionof large elastic fluid turbines particularly those intended for use with elastic fluids of high temperature,.-the
problem of'connecting the exhaust heador housing to the turbine shell orcasing is-a serious one because of the great differences in temperature which exist between the turbine shell or casing and the exhaust housing, which cause unequal expansion of the parts; Particularly is this true where the casing is made of steel and the exhaust head of cast iron becauseiof thedifi'erence in the co-eflicients of expansion of steel and cast iron, and also where the elastic fluid is reheated between stages because of the higher temperature to which the low pressure end of the casing is then sub'ected. For example, in some instances t ere may be a decrease in temperature of as'much as 650 F. in a very short distance, which means a very substantial difference in temperature between the exhaust housing and the ad- 'jacent portion of the turbine casing.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction and arrangement for fastening a turbine casing to an ex,- haust housing, and for a consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the accompanying description and the claims appended thereto; i I a In the drawing, then re is a side elevation, partly in section 0 a turbine structure embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1' indicates the turbine shell or casing,'2 the head'at the admission end of the machine and 3 the exhaust housing. Connected to head 2is the and is to be taken as typical of. any suite 1e turbine.
casin that the. invention may be Accordingto my invention, 1 connect the exhaust housing 3 to theshell 1 through the intermediary of an annular, axially-extendmg ring 9 formed a integral with the shell tit? and provided with a seat 10 onwhich the I inner edge of the exhaust housing rests and whlch serves to center the exhaust housing relatively to shell ,1. Ring 9 has a radially projecting flange 11 against which the side edgeof the exhaust housing means: of a ring ofboltsr 12.
The member 9 being in the form of a ring, has, great strength and rigidity, and while it is still enough to hold the exhaust housing and the turbine shell in axial alignment,-still-it has suflicient flexibility to peris fastened bymit the casing and exhaust housing to expand and contract relatively to each other without causing undul large strains in the respective parts, ,Att e same time the exhaust housing is accurately centered and firmly attached to the turbine casing. en the turbine casing expands radially, the ring permits it to go uniformly in all directions thereby keeping the parts in perfeet alignment.
The annular ring 9 is advantageously at-, tached to the casing at the end of the easing and projects axially forwardly toward the high pressure end of the machine, By this arrangement it is attached to the coolest part of the casing where the least expansion occurs and its provision does not increase the length of the machine over what it would otherwise be. Also, ring!) is made conical, preferably, and stands in spaced relation to the low pressure end of 1. This leaves an annular air chamber etween ring 9 and casing; 1 which serves to protect ring 9 from the temperature of the adjacent rtion of casin 1. By this arrangement rmg'9 is maintained at a more even temperature and one substantially the same as that existing inside the exhaust housing.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent-statutes, l have described the principle of operation of m invention, to ether with the apparatus w ich T nowconsider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it underst that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and carried out by other means,
' the low What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters lgatent of the United States,
ring serving to permit relative radial ex pansion between the casing and housing, and serving also to connect the exhaust housing to the coolest part-of the turbine casin 2. n an which rtially surrounds the low pressure en of the casing, an axially-extending ring formed integral with the low pressureend'of the casing, 'said ring being provided with a seat for theexhaust housing,
and means for fasteningthe exhaust housing on said seat, said ring serving to connect the exhaust housing to theqcoolest por- 1 tion of the casing."
' 3; In an elastic fluid'turbine, thecombination of -a. casing, an axially extending ring which surrounds the low pressure end of the ca singand' is formed integral therewith, said ringprojectin toward the high pressure end of the 'tur ine, and an exelastic fluid turbine, the combi-- nation of a casing, an exhaust housingexhaust housing which haust housing connected to the free edge of said ring. r
4. In an elastic fluid turbine, the combination of a casing, an axially-extending ring which-surrounds the low pressure end of the casing and is formed integral therewith, said ring projectin toward the high pressure end of the tur ine, means forming an axially-extending seat at the free end of said ring, and an exhaust housing which is fastened to the free end of said ring and is centered b said seat.
In an elastic'flui turbine, the combi nation of a "casing, an exhaust housing which partially surrounds the low pressure end of the casing, andan' axially extending ring whichsurrounds the low pressure end of the casing and connects the exhaust housing to the casing, said ring being located in spaced relation to the casmg.
6.-In an elastic fluid turbine, the combination of a casing, a conical shaped ring connected to the low ressure end of the casing and extending orwardly therefrom in spaced relation to the casing, and an partially surrounds the turbinecasing and is connected to the free'end of said ring.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 23rd day of Jul 1923.
