LMZMS O. HANDLER CANDLE SNUFFER Filed Jan. 16. 1924 VENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. Z5, 1924.
oscar. HANDLER, orNnwxonn, N. v.
CANDLE snnrrnn.
applicati@ filed January 16, 1924. serial No. 686,576.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, OSCAR HANDLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough ofi the Bronx, in the countyV of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Candle Snuffel', of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description.
This invention relates to improvements in f candle snuers, an objectof the invention being to provide a device of the character stated which can be positioned at any point desired on the candle and which when the candle burns down to the snuifer will autoinatically extinguish the candle.
A further object is to provide a snuffer of the character stated which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low price andwhich will most efhciently perform the functions for which it is intended.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed yout in the claims. Y
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, illustrating my improved device in position on the candle;
Figure 2 is a similar view but showing the snuffer in longitudinal section;
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section on the line 3 3 of Figure 1;
Figure a is a view, similar to Figure 3, showing the blades in their snuifing or closed position;
Figure 5 is a view in transverse section on the line 5-5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is an enlarged view in section through the snuffel' blade mountings and adjacent parts.
1 represents the casing of iny improved snuffel", which may be ornainented and variously formed, but which is preferably of an external diameter at its lower end less than the diameter at its upper end. This casing 1 is provided with a top 2 which is preferably snapped onto the upper end of the casing or otherwise rendered removable to facilitate an assembling or disassembling of the device as it is desirable from time to time to clean the same. This top 2 is made with a central opening 3 of a diameter sufficiently large to receive a candle 1v, and as Vpare a pair of snuiiing blades 9.
shown clearly in Figure 2 the lower end of the casing is open and in substantial alinement with the opening 3 so that the device can be conveniently positioned on the candle at theelevation desired. To prevent accidental movement of the device on the candle I provide a resilient finger or jaw 5 secured to the lower portion of the casing 1 and engaged by a cam 6 on a cam shaft 7 projecting through the casing and having a milled head 8 thereon to turn the shaft and move the jaw into engagement with the candle, or permit a release of the candle, as will be understood.
In the upper portion of the casing I pre- These blades 9 are pivotally mounted on upright pins 10 fixed to a supporting ring 11, and handles 12 are made integral with the blades 9 and project through a slot or recess 13 in casing 1 so that they can be conveniently manipulated to move the blades 9. This ring 11 is held in operative position in the casing by means of a series of depending hook-shaped'lugs 14 which spring under a bead 15 within the casing. On the pins 10 and operatively connected with the blades 9 I provide coil springs 16 which exert pressure on the blades, tending to move them together, or, Vin other words, to the position shown in Figure 4. It will thus be noted that the blades 9 and ring 11 with the adj acent co-operating parts constitute a removable unit which can be readily taken out of the casing after the top 2 is removed. This not only facilitates the assemblage of the device but also permits dismemberment thereof to effectually clean the same from time to time.
To place the snuffel.' in position on the candle 4, the liandles 12 are moved together thus forcing the blades 9 apart, and when the device is positioned on the candle at the desired elevation the handles 12 are released and the springs 16 will force the blades 9 into Contact with the candle. To prevent the possibility of accidental slipping of the device on the candle, the cam shaft 7 is operated to force the finger or jaw 5 firmly against the candle, as shown in Figure 2. lNhen the candle burns down to the casing 1 the blades 9 will automatically swing inwardly toward each other and extinguish the candle.
Various slight changes and alterations lll() might be made in the general form of the parts described Without departing from my invention,` and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make suoli slight ehanges and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim: Y l. A candle snuffel' of the character described, comprising,` a easing adapted t0 be positioned on a candle, a removable ring inthe casing, upwardly projecting pins on the ring', snutlilng blades pivotal-ly supported lf3 on the pins, springs on the pins'tending to OSCAR HANDLER.
