GEORGE MURRAY, OF BAYVILLE, NEW YOR-KQASSIGNOR. '10 CLAUDIUS WANSOR, OF
HEMPSTEAD, LONG ISLAND, NEW' YORK.
WALL PLUG'.
Application filed December 13, 1922. Serial No. 606,652.
To (all i/izo//t t nur l/ Conce/rn:
Bc it tinoivn that I.' Gnonon lrlUnnAY, of, ilayville, Long island, in the county ot' Nassau and State of New York1 a citizen oli the United States. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in fall 1Plugs, of Which the 'following is a specification.
',lhis invention is a Wall plug and is intended inore particularly for use in Walls built of hollow tile.
The object oit the invention is to provide a simple and cheap plug Which inay be easily tted in the wall and which will be securely held to provide a tirin anchor 'to which may be secured any parts which are to be fastened to the tile such as door or Window frames. lurring for inside walls, partitions, etc. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and will be hereinafter' fully set forth.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is an elevation olf niy improved plug in position in a tile, the tile being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the inner or toot nieinber of the plug'.
Fig. 3 is a similar view ot the outer or head nieinber of the plug.
it portion ol1 a hollow building tile is shown in Fig. l, said tile being olE the flllni nvn construction and comprising an outer rectangular shell l and one or more internal Webs or partitions 2 disposed parallel with the sides of the shell.
My improved plug is constructed of Wood and comprises a base or foot ineinber 3 which is reenlnfcetl against splitting at one end in any convenient maur-er, as by securin g a band of metal l around the sanie. The 'base ineinber may, ot course, be of any desired dimensions so that all needs .may be neet. and it is slotted :troni the end opposie the band longitudinaliy. as at 59 'to torni three or more tongues which are apere l toward their :t'ree ends so that they will exert a wedging action when in use,'as will presently appear. The outer or head member 7 oit the plug is also a Wooden block of elongated form having a central longitudinal split or kerf 8 therein and l1av-` ing its sides tapered for the length of the kerf or split toward the open end thereof, as at 9, thereby 'forming tongues l0 adapted to tit between, and. cooperate With the tongues 6.
n using the plug, a hole ll is broken in the shell ot the tile and the base member of the plug is inserted through the opening until .its reenforeed butt end bears against the internal Web or partition ot the tile. 'The outer or head ineinber of the plug :is then placed in position with its tongues l0 engagingV between the tongues and it is driven lionne by a ew light blows upon its projecting solid end. The length of the base ineinber is about equa-l to the distance from the web or partition 2 ot' the tile 'to the outer surface of the shell so that the free ends of the tongues 6 Will rest in the opening ll as clearly shown .in Fig. l. TWhen the outer member is driven home, the tapered formation of the several tongues will cause them. to eXert a Wedging action on each other so that the free ends of the outer tongues 6 will be bound rinly in engagement with the rough Walls of the opening 1l and the several tongues will be wedged together so firmly that it is practieally impossible to pull out the plug Without breaking the tile. The end ot the head ineniber of the plug will project 'from the tile so that it can be cut at any desired distance from the latter and Will furnish a irni anchor to which furl-ing or other elements may be nailed.
Having thus fully described niy invention, what I claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the Unitee States 1s:-
l. A Wall plug consisting of a base meniber having a reentorced butt end and a plurality ot tapered tongues projecting troni said end adapted to be inserted through an opening in the side ot' a hollow building tile With its butt end bearing against the inner web of the tile and the free ends of the tongues .resting in the opening in the tile. and a base member having a plurality ot tapered tongues constructed to engage and be held by the base inelnber and. ell' binding engagement between the base ineinbcr and the tile.
2. A Wall plug consisting oi a base niein ber having a reentoreed end and longitudinal tongues extending therefrom, said tongues being tapered toward their free ends, and a head ineinber having a solid end and tapered tongues projecting there troni, the tongues on one member being adapted to engage in the spacesbetween the lli) tongues on the other member whereby to bind the members together' and in a hole .in a Wall.
3. A Wall plug comprising a base niember having' a reenforced end and spaced tongues extending longtudiliially therefrom, Said tongues being tapered toward their free ends, and a head member having a Solid end and a plurality ot tapered tongues projecting therefrom arranged `to be forced Y with a wedging engagement into the Spaces between theY tongues of the base member.
Al. A Wall plug comprising a base nienr ber having a butt end arranged to 'form an end bearing, and a plurality of spaced tapered tongues projecting longitudinally 'from saidbutt end and a head member having a plurality ol tapered tongues arranged to be driven in Wedging engagement between the tongues of the base member.
In testimony whereofl I hereunto affix my si gnature.
