Appication filed July 24,
To @ZZ ywhom 'it Imay4 concer/i.'
Be it known that I, Oer/xvii J. Henner, a citizen of the United States, residingat New Iberia, in the paiisli of Iberia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tashboards, of which the following' is a specification.
This invention relates to wash boards and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a wash board iiichiding a rubbing` element formed from a flat rectangular base having each of its faces provided with spa-ced transverse ribs constructed of a single length of wire of suitable diameter ancl'ioied in one side edge and anchored in` and secured to the other side edge of the base thereby when the wire is set up to provide 'both faces of the base with the transverse ribs a rubbingelement is formed on each of its` faces with a ribbed surface against which the clothes are rubbed when the wash board is used.
A further obje-et of the invention is to provide a wash board, in a manner as hercinafter set forth, with a rubbingelementand. means connected with said element to form a soap holder at each side of the head of the wash board, and with said means and element constructed to provide a iilui'a-lity of drainage openings for each holder at the bottom of the latter.
A further object of the invention to provide a wash board, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with a` rubbing velement extended into a pair of supportinglegs,
with means carried by the legs and engaging iii the sides of the rubbingelement for securing said'legs and i'ublgiing element together, and with means for coupling' the legs together to .hold the rubbing` element and which` in connection with the means for securing the rubbing elementv to the legs will rigidly secure the legs and elementtogether, and further with said coupling element preventing the spreading of the legis with respect to eachother when the wash board is used.
Further objects of the invention are to provide awash board, in a manner as hereinafter referred to, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient iii its'use. readily assembled and inexpensive to manu-4 facture.
With the foregoing' and other objects in 1923. Serial N0. 653,582.
view, the invention consists of the -novel construction, combination and arrangement.
of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment Figure 3 is an edge View, broken awa-y,

'as 'further in connection with the legs 1.
:indicated at y8, and said groove S extends of the wash board.
`Arranged between the legs 1, 2, as well as being connected therewith, is a rubbing ele- Ineiit which consists ot a rectangular tlat base lid-oi a length equal to the length of a pocket 3. The thickness ott the base 13 is such vaste snuglT tit the side walls of a Vp'oclt'e't 3, as shown in Figure et. Each side marginal portion ot each `tace ot the base .13 is provided with a set of spaced parallel horizontally extending grooves gradually increasing in depth towards a side edge of the base. The horizontallT extending grooves in one side marginal portion ot each `face of the base ternnnate into transverse grooves, to be presently re'iierred to, formed in one side edge ol the base. rThe other horinontallyv extending grooves in the other side marginal portions ot' the base terminate iii-to ineline'd grooves, to be presently reer'rled t0, formed in the other side edge ot the base. The transverse side edge grooves vas lwell as the inclined side edge grooves aduallvY increase in depth troni the center thereof 'towards each end. One side edge ofthe basel is formed with spaced grooves 14,'"wliich aretiansversely disposed 'with re-V spect, to fsaid edge and are seinisoval shaped in plan, as 'shown in Figure 5, and ott a length 'to terminate in a pair of marginal kgrooves on -opposite faces ot the base 13.
Thefo'the' side edge oft the base 13 is formed with grooves 15, disposed at an inclination, a-n'd in plan lare semi-oval shaped in contour and each is ot' a leirgthto extend vtrom a 'lon-*efr marginal groove on one tace to an upper marginal groove'on the other face otl the vvbase '13, as shown in Figure The grooves 1&1 are spaced eqnidistant from each other 'and a similar arrangement is set up with fres'liecit to the grooves Each `groove lil merges 'into a pair ot' marginal grooves arranged 'on opposite v'faces of the base. one e andinerges into an upper marginal groove'on the other'fiace of the base.
vEach `tace ot' the lbase 13 isprovided with spaced "transverse ribs 1G, land which are formed Vironia single 'length oi wire ot the desired dianiete and said wire is wrapped ari'found Athe hase 13, extended through the grooves lil :rnd through the grooves lo, and
said wire which is indicated at li' has its lower terminal portion looped` as at 1S, and extending through said looped portion is a yoke-shaped securing device, which also overlaps the bend in the wire 1T which is mounted in the lowermost groove l5. 'lhe upper terminal portion ol the wire 1T is provided with a loop 2l through which extends the angular-ly disposed terminal 2; el the said. upper terminal portion ot the wire 1T. The wire 1T at the upper end ot' the base i3 is seated in the upper groove l--l. and also in the upper groove 15. The inanncr in which the terminal portions ot the wire 1T are secured to the base lfl, is clearlyv shown in Figure 3.
The strips Ylll arc positioned against thc base l?, at the upper end thereof` as shown in Figure 2. and said strips are connected to the base 13 bv suitable securing devices 2?. rlhc top edge oit the base lil is i'ornn-d with a `groove 2l which constitutes a .scat it'or the bottom edge oi' the partition nicmber 9. The said bottom edge if ot said partition member corresponds in contour to the shape of the groove 24:. The base iii, at its` top, at each side t-lu-ueot, is provided with a plurality ot angle shaped grooves '26, which oppose vertical grooves 2T formed on thc inner tace ot the strips 10, and said groovesl QG, in connection with the grooves 2T provide each ot the soap holdersl at the bottom thereo'l with a plurality ol drainage open ings.
The base 13 extends into the pockets il. as shown in Figure if, and extending through the legs 1, Q, and engaging in the side edges. ot the base 13, are hold-tast devirffes 2S -l'or coi/meetingl the base 13 with the legs.
To prevent the .spreading olf lhe legs l.l L), with respect to the rubbingelement., a couplingelement is employed vor connectingthc legs 1, 2 together and said coupling element or member arranged against thc lower edge ot the base 13:5. The said coupling element or member consists ot a length oil wirt` 29 ol the desired diameter and which is seated in a groovel 30 formed in the bottom edge ot thebase 13. The wire 29 extends through each ot the, legs as ini'lica'ted `at il and. is then bent upwardl)Y to scat in a groove 32, formed on the outer liace ot each ot thev legs and then extended Ainto the legs and bv this arrangement the leos l, :2, are coupled together to prevent rthe spreading thereof. when the wash board is used.
From the foregoing dcscril'ition taken in connection with the accoinininving drawings a rigid Lconstruction oi wash board is set up having a pair oit rubbing surfaces and wnn such surfaces iormed ot a base priwided with ribs construct-ed troni a single length oi? wire. secured to and anchored in the base. and bj.' this arrangement an unusinilliv du rablc rubbing surface is provided.. and Ialtitl though the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be resorted to which come Within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
