UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- EDWIN J. ARMSTRONG, or ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MEs E ASSIGNMENTS, To ERIE STEAM SHOVEL COMPANY, OF
CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A.
HOISTING APPARATUS.
Application filed February 13, 1923. Serial No. 618,817.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, .EDWIN J. ARMSTRONG,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Hoisting Apparatus,
of which the following is a specification.
, This invention is designed to control the leading device of a cable operating in connection with an adjustable boom so that the cable may be properly guided to the drum with different adjustments of the boom and at a distance from the drum to facilitate the winding of the cable.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a drag line apparatus provided with the structure ofthe invention.
I Fig. 2 a lan view of the parts at the base 2 of the boom including the leading device.
Fig. 3 a side elevation of the same parts on the line 33 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 a side elevation of the base of the boom showing various adjustments of the boom and the relation of the leading device to the drum.
1 marks a truck, 2 a swinging platform mounted on the truck, 3 a boom pivotally mounted at 4' on the swinging platform, 5
80 cables running to the upper end of the boom and secured at 6 to the swingingplatform for adjusting the inclination of the boom, 7 a drag line bucket, 8 a hoisting cable for the drag line bucket, 9 a sheave at the to of the boom for the cable 8, 10 a'drum w ich operates the cable, 11 a drag line, and 12 a drum on which the drag line is wound..
These parts are, or may be,'of ordinary construction. It is common to provide the drag line with a guiding or leading means arranged above the pivot of the boom. This makes the inclination from this leading device to the drum so abrupt as to interfere with the free winding of the c'able'on the drum. It is desirable, therefore, to mount'the leading device in advance of the boom and the only convenient mounting at this point is on the boom itself. Where this is done the changing of the inclination of the boom varies the relation of the leading .device to the tangent on the drum. The present invention provides a means by which this device may be which may be established by the swinging of the platform. The horizontal sheaves take the thrust of the cable incident to the variation in direction brought about by the winding of the cable on the drum and also the variation in the direction of the drag bucket in the usual manner. The mounting 16 is connected by a pivot. pin 18 with a bracket 19 so that the device as a whole is carried by the boom 3.
An adjusting bar 20 at 21 with the carrier mounting 16, the pivotal point 21 being'oif-set from the pivot 18 and the opposite end of the bar 20 ispivotally secured at 22 on a bracket 23 secured to the swin 'ng frame. The pivot 22 is ofi'-' set as it wi 1 be seen from the pivot of the boom 3. The off-set distances between the pivot 18 and pivot 21. and the pivot 4 and pivot 22 are so proportioned relatively to each other as to govern the swinging. mounting of the mounting 16 as the boom is lowered or raised to maintain its relation to a tangent running tothe drum so that the cable leading from the drum to the sheave 13 is maintained-in proper relation to these sheaves with the various adjustments of the boom as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 wherein various adjustments of the boom are shown. I
What I claim as new is a 1. In a hoisting apparatus, the combina is pivotally connected tion of a boom adjustable as to inclination;
a hoisting drum; a cable winding on the drum; a cable leading device on the boom;
ing the alinement of the device with the 1 drum.
2. In a hoisting apparatus, the combina- 3 said device adjustable with the adjustment of the boom maintaining the tangential relation of the sheaves'with the drum.
3. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of a boom adjustable as to inclination; a hoisting drum; a cable winding on the drum; a'cable leading device comprising a vertically pivoted sheave carrier; a horizontally pivoted carrier mounting for the sheave. carrier; and means adjusting the mounting as the boom is adjusted to maintain' the sheave carrier in alinement with the drum.
4. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of a boom adjustable as to inclination; a hoisting drum; a cable winding on the drum; a cable leading device comprising a vertically pivoted sheave carrier; a horizontally pivoted carrier mounting for the sheave carrier; and means for adjusting the mounting as the boom is adjusted to maintain the sheave carrier in alinement with the drum, said means comprising a bar connectfrom the pivot of said mounting, the opposite end of the bar being mounted off-set from the axis of the boom.
5. In a hoisting ap aratus, th combination of a boom; aplat orm; a pivotal mounting for the boom on the platform; a drum mounted on the latform; a cable winding on the drum; a eading device mounted on theboom, said leading device comprising a sheave carrier having horizontal and vertical sheaves therein, the horizontal sheaves having their grooves tangential to the drum; a carrier mounting for the sheave carrier pivoted on the drum with a horizontal piv- 0t; and a bar pivotally,connected to the mounting and pivotally connected to the 7 platform, said pivotal connections of the bar being oif-set from the pivotal connection ofthe mountingand the pivotal connection of the boom with the platform, the off-set distances being proportioned. to maintain the tangential relation between the sheaves and the drum as the boom is adjusted.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
EDWIN J. ARMSTRONG.
