BATTING-SHUTTLE WINDING DEVICE.

Be it known that we, CHAnLns D. Ftsorrnn and IVALTER Ru'rxowsxi, citizens of the United States, residing at Encampment, in the county of Carbon and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tatting-Shuttle VVindling Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in winding devices for tatting shuttles and has for its principal object to provide a simple and efficient device which may be easily operated, means being pro vided for guiding the thread to the shuttle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tatting shuttle winding device of the above mentioned character, wherein means 7 is associated with the supporting frame for the shuttle for preventing the pinching and breaking of the thread by the points of the shuttle as the same rotates in the frame.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a tatting shuttle winding device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally a substantially U- shaped frame which is formed of sheet metal and the arms thereof have their intermediate portions bent inwardly and fastened together as illustrated at 4 whereby a handle portion 5 is provided and the free 1924. ends of the arms 2 and 3 provide a means for receiving therebetween the tatting shuttle 6, the construction of which is well known in the art.
The tatting shuttle 6 is provided in the central portion of the plates comprising the same with the key hole shaped slots 7 and 8 respectively, the purpose of which is to provide a means for cooperation with the i trunning 9 which is supported on the outer free end of the arm 2 and extends inwardly therefrom while the slot 8 is adapted to receive the clutch 10 provided on the inner end of the crank shaft 11 which extends i,
through a suitable bearing 12. provided in the outer end of the opposite arm 8 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing. A handle such as-is illustrated at 13 is associated with the crank shaft to provide a means for actuating the same whereby the tatting shuttle may be rotated between the outer ends of the arms 2'and 3 of the substantially U-shaped frame 1.
Disposed between the inwardly bent portions of the arms of the U-shaped frame 1 and secured therein by means of the fastening member 4 is th guide plate 14, the construction of which is more clearly illustrated in Figure 3. The plate is of substantially the same width as the width of the band comprising theframe and the same has its forward end beveled as illustrated at 15 and the same is disposed between the outer ends of the arms 2 and 3 within the path of rotation of the tatting shuttle in the manner as illustrated more clearly in Figure 1. The plate is provided with the openings 16 whereby the fastening means 1 may extend therethrough to sup port the same in position in the frame.
Formed on the forward end of the plate and cooperating with the beveled edge thereof are the hooks 17 and through which is adapted to extend the thread A which is to be wound on the tatting shuttle in the manner well known in the art.
The provision of the hooks on the forward beveledend of the plate provides a means for guiding the thread to the tatting shuttle and furthermore will prevent the pointed end of the tatting shuttle from pinching or otherwise breaking the thread as the shuttle rotates between the free ends of the arms. It will of course be understood that when the handle 13 of the crank shaft 11 is turned, the tatting shuttle will rotate in such a man ner as to, cause the forward beveled end of the plate to be wedged between the sides of the tatting shuttle so that the same will extend into the shuttle without causing any ipterference with the rotation of the shutt e.
In winding the thread on the tatting shuttle, the shuttle is placed in position Within the frame and the operator holds the frame by the handle in one hand and turns the lc ra'nlg sha'ft 11 through the medium of the handle 13 in the other hand therebywinding the thread on the shuttle in a oompar -atively simple and efiicient manner.
The simplicity of our device enables the same to be manufactured at a very "low cost and will further be strong and durable. The provision of the thread guide, plate will prevent the thread fro-in being broken, by the pointed ends of the shuttle and will furthermore hold the thread in such a posias to enable the same to he wound on the shuttle in a comparatively short time vithou t any danger of the thread beoo1ning. entangled.

Having thus described our invention, what We claim is 1. A tattingshuttle winding device comprising a substantially U-sliaped frame, a shuttle rotatably supported therein, means for actuating the same, a thread guide on the frame and disposed in the path of the rotation of theshuttle, said guide comprising a plate disposed between the arms of the U-shaped frame and secured thereto and hooks provided on the forward end thereof to, receive th e thread. 7
