Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
ELIAS BURNHAM, OF PETERBOROUGH, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLASTIC ROOFINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,683, dated June 9, 1874; application filed August 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS BURNHAM, of the town of Peterborough, in the county of Peterborough, in the Provinceof Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful roofing-material and method of applying the same to roofs, walls, 860., of which the following is a specification:
My invention embraces both the material applied and the method of applying it, the said material being formed in the act of placing it on the surface to be covered, thus making my invention to differ from many other roofings entirely portable, as also from others applied as a mortar or cement, the formation and effect of which it is my purpose to avoid, although such roofings do contain in different combinations, and combinations which from their nature are essentially different from my invention, ingredients claimed by me in the specific relation and combination hereinafter set forth.
The one process of manufacture and application of my roofing-material is as follows: Take the common felt now in use and spread it upon the roof. Upon the felt then put a heavy coat of common pitch. Upon the pitch put a heavy coat of coal-tar in a boiling state, and into the coal-tar while so heated pour as much clean, coarse, sharp, sifted sand as the coal-tar will take up. The roofing is then left for a few days, at the end of which time it will be set and perfectly hard. Then lay upon the roof a thin layer of loose sand, and it is completed.
Having described my invention I claim- A roofing formed as follows, to wit: Sheetfelting covered by a coat of common pitch, said pitched felting being afterward covered with a coat of coal-tar in a boiling state, into the said coal-tar while so heated being poured as much clean, coarse, sharp, sifted sand as the coal-tar will take up, substantially as herein specified, for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ELIAS BURNHAM.
