Be it known that I, EDWIN F. BEUGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, havel invented new and useful Improvements in Compressor-Jaw .Mountings for Barrel Machines, of which the tollowing is a speciiication.
This invention relates generally to improvements in b-arrel making machines, but more particularly to the means for mounting the stave-compressing jaws.
In barrel making machines of the type shown in my United States Letters Patent No. 941,404, dated blovember` 30, 1909, the staves are compressed at their upper ends through the medium of a pair of horizontally-swinging compressor arms which are adapted to surround the staves and on which are mounted a series of segmental jaws or plates arranged to contact with the staves when the compressor arms are closed.
The principal object of the invention is to improve the means for yieldingly mounting the segmental aws on the compressor arms whereby said jws may be renewed or replaced when necessary without affecting or disturbing their mounting proper.
A further object is to provide a simple 30 and Vinexpensive mounting of this character which is reliable and durable in construction and not liable to get out of order.

By way of example, the improved mounting is shown in connection with a machine constructed in accordance with my prior aforesaid patent, b-ut it will be understood that the invention is equally applicable to other machines of this general character.

ried by bifurcated yokes 11 'ulcrumed on a vertical post 12. The straight portions of these arms are connected by toggle links 13, 14 which are `pivoted to each other by a vertical pin 15 guided for movement in a slot 16 formed in an extension member 17 secured to said post 12. Pmver-actuated mechanism, not shown, is employed for spreading' the toggles to contract the compressor arms around the barrel while a coil spring 1S -connecting the inner ends of said arms serves to automatically return them to their open or normal position upon the release of the toggle device. The mechanism thus far described forms no part of the present invention and has just been briefly described for the purpose of enabling those skilled in the art to understand the application of the present invention thereto.
As is customary in machines of this type, the compressor arms do not themselves touch the barrel, but each one has a series of segmental jaws or plates 19 thereon which come directly in contact with the barrel staves when the compressor arms are i closed. Each of the latter is provided with an equal number of such jaws which are uniformly spaced, each jaw being curved to a circle which is substantially the same radius as the body of the barrel being operated upon. These. jaws are yieldingly mounted on the Icompressor arms so that they are permitted a certain range otmovement to adapt them to the irregularities in the shape of the barrels. The preferred means for thus mounting each oiI these j aws on the respective compressor arms are constructed as follows:
20 indicates a radially-movable slide or carrier plate guided in a dovetail way or groove 21 :formed in the upper side of the compressor arm and in an outwardly projecting extension 22 having a depending portion or bracket 23. The segmental jaw is adjustably mounted on this slide and is provided with a laterally extending lug 24 having a slot 25 through which a bolt 26 secured to said slide is adapted to pass. To reliably interlock the jaw with its slide and prevent longitudinal displacement thereof on the latter after being set in an adjusted position, the contiguous faces of said parts are provided with teeth 27. adjusted to suit barrels ot different sizes within certain limits.
The jaw-slide 20 is held yieldingly against outward movement relatively to its compressor arm by means of an upright Jfulcrum member or bar 29 fitted within a recess or socket 30 formed in the depending bracket 23, the upper end of said member projecting into an opening 31 in the outer end of the slider and the lower end of the same. engaging outwardly facing bearing surfaces on this socket. Extending diagonally through an opening 32' in this fulcrum bar and through a vertical slot 33 in said bracket is a bolt 34.-, and applied to the inner end of the latter is a coil spring 35. This spring bears at one end against the bracket and at its other end against a washer 36 and nut 37 so as to constantly resist the outward movement of the jaw-slide.

For operating upon barrels of different sizes, it is only necessary to substitute jaws of different sizes without in any way affect ing the mounting itself.
This improved mounting comprises but few parts which are so constructed and or ganized that they are not liable to get out of order and which may be readily replaced when desired without the necessity of substituting a whole new mounting.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a machine oit the character described, the combination with a pair ot compressor armsarranged to encircle a barrel, of a radially movable jaw mounted. on each of said arms, and a member lEu'lcrumed on the respective compressor arm and operatively connected to` said jaw for yielding-ly resisting its movement in one direction.
2. In a machine of thel character described, the combination with a pair of compressor arms arranged to encircle a barrel, of a ra dially movable slide mounted on each of said arms, a segmental jaw carried by said slide, a fulcrum member supported on the respective compressor arm and operatively connected to said slide, and means for re straining the rocking movement of said member in one direction.
3. ln a machine of the character described, the combination with a pair of compressor arms arranged to encircle a barrel and each having a bracket, of a radially movable slide mounted on each of said arms and having` an opening therein, a segmental carried by said slide, and a yieldable tulcrum member carried by said bracket and engaging the opening in said slide.

A. machine of the character described, comprising an arm movable toward and from the barrel and provided with a guideway, a bracket depending from the outer side of said arm and having a bearing surface on its lower part and a guide opening on its upper part, a slide movable in. said guideway and provided at its inner end with a jaw adapted to engage the barrel and at its outer end with a vertical opening, an upright fulcrumv bar engaging. its lower end with said bearing surface and its upper end with said opening in the slide and provided between its ends with an opening, a tension boltJ passing through the openings of said bracket and tu'lcrum bar and having a head at its outer end engaging the outer side ol" said bar, and a spring surrounding the bolt and engaging its outer end with the bracket and operatively connected at its inner end with said bolt.
