THOMAS J, MAJcinzAx, or GBANDRAPFIDSQMIWCHIGAN. i
FLUID-FUEL BURNER;
Application niaremuay 29, 192,4.,` sfriaiiv'laawa To all whom t may concern.' n
Be it known that I, THorIAs J. MAJCHRZAK,
a 4citizen of the Unitedr States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county ofk Kent and i Statev of Michigam'have invented 'new and useful Improvements in kF1uid-li`uel Burners, of which the following is a' specification.
The present inventionvrelates to fluid-fuel burners; and its object is to provide fin such a burner meansA for forcing the flame ina horizontal direction by an air-draft, to thus heat a surrounding air-heatingelement; and further, to provide in-such a burner iin--` proved specific parts and constructions.
This and any other *objectsv hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter particularly described in the bodyof this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a`vertical sectional view of a furnace having a fluid-fuel burner applied thereto;
Figure 2 is'a top plan view of the burner, its upper member being partially lbroken away;
Figure 3 is a side view of the same, shown partly4 in central vertical section taken on line 3 3 of Figure 2; and
F'igure 4 is another side view of a portion of thesame, partly sectioned on line 4--4 of Figure 2.
In the construction illustrated by the drawings, the furnace 1 having a casing 2 is equipped with an oil-burner which comprises a base member 3 suitably supported, as by the hollow cylinder 4 resting on the grate-bars 5 of the furnace, which (as in the form shown) may have been originally intended for burning solid fuel. member 3 has a vertically disposed air-draft passage 6 therethrough, registering with a like passage 7 through the cylindrlcal .support 4. The burner comprises also an upper member 8 forming the upper wall of the upper portion of the air-draft passage 6 and having its under surface 9 inclined upwardly-outwardly as particularly shown in Figure 3. The burner further comprises a feeding pipe 10 for the oil, whose discharge vent 11 is located below the upper member 8 and adjacent the upper and outer end of the passage 6. Oppositely disposed opentop containers or shallow ,basinsl 12 are formed in the' upper end ofthe base mem-4 ber 3 and are provided with drain pipes`13 This baseeirtending upwardly 'vthereinto vto .drain the'rv `o1l accumulating 'above the level of their innerends. The upper member 8 has La centrallydi'sposed orice 14 through which (and through the, air-dra'ftkkopenings' and 7) the feeding pipe entends upwardly, then bl'a-nchin" Iat`1'5, 15 vand,'extending down. wardly t yrough holes 16,116 in the upper member to" their discharge' vents. The base member 3 has oppositelyfdisposed upwardly extending flanges 17, 18 between the basins' 12 and provided'with shallow airdraft ldepressions :19 through which any gas' which collectjisexpelled,vby the draft, between the upperand lower members 8 and 3, and is consumed by the flames of the burning oil. These flanges have wing portions 2() at their ends, the discharge vents 11 of the branches 15 of the feeding pipe being located between adjacent portions 20 of the two anges.
It will be seen that the flames (indicated -at 21) from the burning oil in the shallow basins 12 are driven outwardly in a horizontal direction by the air passing upwardly through the passage 6 and betweenthe upper member 8 and the base member 3, and are thus driven against the air-heating element 22 forming the combustion chamber of the furnace, and ,thus thoroughly and quickly heats the same, so that the air surrounding the furnace is heated in like manner.
It will also be seen that the parts comprised in said burner are particularly well adapted to effect the general purposes of my invention. A pan or plate 23 may rest on the grate bars 5 and be covered with heatinsulating material 24, as ashes or the like, to confine the heat from passing. downwardly. between the grate bars.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limitedk to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
I claim:
l. A burner having a vertically disposed air-draft passage therethrough with an up- Wardly-outwardly inclined upper portion, and having' a fluid-fuel feeding pipe with a discharge vent below and adjacent the upper wall of the upper-outer end of said passage.
2. In a burner: a base member having a vertically disposed air-draft passage therethrough; an upper member having an upsok wardly outwjardlyi 'ilined 'u'nder surface and forming" the upper wall of rthe upperr portion of said passage; a fluid-fuel feeding v pipe having a dischar'gefvenr) be1ow" 'sai 2 upper member and adjacent the .upperfouter of said passage. p 3. In a'burner; a kbase memberjhaving a vertically disposed air-draftpassage thereing an upwardlyoutward outer end of said passage,-
4; In a burnerzga base member` a vertically disposed air-draft passage there-4 throuh; 1an uppermember havinglan orificer theret rough andi an l1ipvsardlyfoutwafrdly inclined' under `surface and fformin (the n upper wallof the upperportion ,of sai .pas-W ing pipe extending up-l wardly through said passage and' saidl orifice and yhaving a. discharge'ven't lbelow said upper member 'and adjacent the upper-outer end fofsai'd passage. if!" 5. Inv a burner: a base member having a v-vertical1y disposed air-draft passage therethroughanrd koppositely disposed upwardl "extendingflanges 'provided with air-dra depressions; an vupper member xhaving-anH orifice therethrough' and anupwardly-outwardly inclined under surface andfforming the upper'tvall of the upper portion of saidy passage; a fluid-fuel feeding .pipe ,extending upwardly rfthrough; 4said passage and lsaid v orifice and having bra'neheszwith discharge ,Y Vents belowsaidupperinember and'adjaeent the,l upper-outer end 'ofkr said passage and` respectivelyr be'tyreensaid flanges.l
