Be it known that I, JOHN L. -WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis} and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in V Reset-Mechanism Control for Presser Rollers, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to length indicating machines and in the following specification uring and cost computing machine. In op erating these machines,- at'ter a measurement has been taken the indicating mechanism must be reset to zero; the indicating mechanism is advanced by a measuring roller over which the fabric is'pulled, and during the measuring operation the fabric is pressed against the measuring roller by a presser 'roller. The indicating mechanism is reset to zero'after the presser roller has been raised. It sometimes happens that the operator will insert the fabric and letdown the presser roller before resetting the' mechanismyor', if reset, before the indicating 3 echanism has completed it'slreturn to zero.

The invention consists in the novel features, and in the general combination of parts to be particularly described hereinafter, all of which contribute to produce a simple and efiicient reset mechanism controlfor presser roller. A preferred embodiment of my invention will be particularly describedin the following specification, while the broad scope of my invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.

The machine comprises a casing 1 in the rapper portionfof which windows are rovided through'which charts 2, 2 are vislble. The numbers on the chants come intoposition opposite two scales 3. The gear train 5 includes a large ear 10 (see FigJS) the horizontal-shaft 11 0 which which meshes with -a corres onding bevel gear 13 carried on a vertical s aft 14. This tubular shaft 14 extends upwardly and carries a fast moving pointer 15. Through a suitable reduction gear 16 (see Fig.2) the shaft 14 drives a large tubular shaft or sleeve 17, the upper end of which carries a slow moving pointer 18. These pointers, therefore, move in synchrony with the charts and; pass around on the face of a dial 19 which indicates up to twelve yards, and also indicates fractions of a yard. In the present instance this dial indicates sights of a yard.
After a measuring 0 ration, the desired length of fabric is mar ed or notched on its edge to indicate the point where it is to be cut off. This is accomplished b means of a marking device or shears inclu ing a mark-- 25 and which may be held against the measuring roller by a pair of springs 26.
The rocking frame 25 is mounted to rock on a rock shaft 27, the endsof which are ro-' tatable in vertical frame plates 28 and 29.

When the presser roller is raised a latch operates to hold it raised. For this purpose the rocking frame 25 is provided with an arm 30 which extends outwardly to cooperate with a latch 31 (see Fig. 4) which is pivoted at 32 and which carries a spring 33 tending to move the latch into a position to engage the arm. When the arm 30 moves downwardl into the position in which it is shown-in i .2 it will move down along the vertical e ge 34 of the latch 31 and will eventually arrive under a shoulder 35. When this occurs the s ring 33 will pull the latch over so that t e shoulder 35 engages over the arm and this will hold the resser roller up. When it is desired to reease the presser roller this may be accomplished b pressing inward upon a thumb plate-or ever 36 which constitutes an operating arm for the latch. When the knife lever 20 is actuated its edge 20 engages arm 30-and raises the presser roller until the latch 31 holds it up.
Suitable means is provided for effecting the resettin of the indicating mechanism to zero. In t e present instance the resetting movement is accomplished by utilizing thesprin?9 ofthe roller 8 (see Fig. 7) as the resetting means. However, in order to enable this spring to accomplish this result it is necessary to oglen the driving train. In order to accomplis this I provide a clutch .return spring '58.
shaft 37 in the gear train 5 (see Figs. 3 and 8). This shaft carries a gear wheel 38 which is driven by a pinion 39 on the shaft wheels 38 and 40. A coil sprin 41 disposed around the inner end of the s aft 37 normally holds the clutch closed. The gear or pinion 40 meshes with the large gear wheel 10 referred to above which drives the shaft 11, the inner end of the shaft 11 being provided with a gear wheel 42 which meshes with an idler 43, said idler meshing with two pinions 44 which are carried, respectively, by the shafts 6 of the two rollers 7. This clutch mechanism and drivin train is fully described in ap lication er. No. 513,303, in the name of eorge B. Kyle, filed November 7, 1921 on fabric measuring and cost computing machine. The shaft or stem ,37 is uided toslide in suitable brackets 45. The c utch may be opened at will by means of a hand operated resetting member 46 in the form of a flat stem, the outer portion of which is guided to slide through a vertical bracket plate 47 (see Figs. v2 and 3). The
side of this stem 46 -is connected by a link 48 with a lever 49 having a laterally bentflan e or pusher 50 which engagesthe end of the' shaft 37. The inner end of the stem 46 is supported by means of a slot 51 in the stem which is engaged by a pin 52 which. projects from the side of the lever 49. The upper end of the lever 49 is pivotally supported by a horizontal frame plate 53.
The resetting stem 46'has a thumb head 54 which is accessible through the wall of the casing 1. When the stem 46 is shoved inwardly the clutch will be 0 ened and the spring 9 will then return t e indicating mechanism to zero. When this occurs the resetting stem will be automatically locked in a position to hold the clutch open and will also actuate means to prevent the presser roller from being let down upon the measuring roller until the resetting movement is completed. In order to accomplish this the plate 64 has a horizontal arm 67 which has a loose pin connection 68 with the outer end of an arm 69, and this arm 69 is ri idly attached to the end of'the rock shaft 2 which comes through the vertical frame plate 29. (See Fig. 4.) With this arrangement it will be evident that if the latch 31 is released when the stem 46 is shoved in, the presser roller 24 will not descend and come against the measuring roller 4 because this movement will be prevented by the plate 64 co-operating with the arm 62.
It will also be evident that if the presser roller. should bedown against the measuring roller when the: resetting button or head 54 ispressed, then the arm 62 would operate to raise the presser roller, 24 and the latch 31' would operate to latch it in its elevated position.
Automatic means is provided for releasing the detent pawl when the indicating mechanism arrives at the zero position; In order to accomplish this the detent pawl 55 has a substantially vertical arm 70. (See Fig. 3.) This arm 70 is engaged by a horizontal arm 71 (see Fig. 6) which is carried on a vertical rock shaft 72. (See Fig. 4.) On the tubular shaft or sleeve 17 there is mounted rigidly an arm 73 which consequentrotates with the slow moving pointer 18 and *gmpletes one revolution when the hand Theen'd of this arm 3, when the mechanism arrives at the zero position strikes against a dog 74 which is rigidly attached to the vertical rock shaft 72. This rocks the shaft 72 in a clock-wise direction and causes the arm 71 to actuate the arm 70 and release the pawl. A light coil spring 75 (see Fig. 4) is attached to an arm 76 rigid with the rock shaft 72 and normall holds the arm 71 back so that it will not interfere with the movement of the detent pawl 55 when it moves down to engage the notch 57. The arm 67 Fig. 8 is connected by a spring 77 with a brake plate 78 guided on the face of the frame plate which, when the presser roller is raised, comes against a disk 79 on the measuring roller shaft, and holds thesame against rotating.
The mode of operation of. the entire'ma chine will now be briefly described. While the presser roller 24 is in its raised position the operator introduces the cloth or fabric between the presser roller and the measuring roller-4. He then presses upon the lever 36 (see Fig. 2) and this releases the presser roller frame and permits the springs 26 Fig. 7 to pull the presser roller 24 down upon the measuring roller 4. The operator then ulls the fabric through the machine and by oing this the pinion 39 Fig. 8 on the measuring roller shaft drives the gear train 5, which operates to advance 'the charts 2 and the pointers 15 and 18. After the measuring operation the operator may operate the lever 20 to mark the fabric at the point where it is to be cut off. When this takes place the edge 20 of the lever 20 will engage the arm 30 of the presser roller frame and operate to raise the presser roller. As the presser roller rises the arm 30 will be en aged by the shoulder 35 of the latch 31 am? the presser roller will be held elevated.
The operator can then remove the web or cloth which he is measuring, from. between the rollers 24 and 4. The operator next shoves in on the resetting stem 46 which operates to open the. clutch composed of the clutch members 38 and 40 (see Fig. 3); as the stem 46 moves inwardly the spring 56 pulls the detent pawl 55 down into the notch 57 and locks the clutch open.
The clutch stays open until the indicating mechanism has arrived at the zero position; when this occurs the arm 73 (see Fig. 4) will strike against the dog 74 and rock the vertical'rock shaft 72. This will rock the arm 71 in a clockwisedirection and it will engage the arm 70 Fig. 3 and release the detent pawl 55. In case the operator moves the latch 31 Fig. 4 with the intention of letting the presser roller down onto the measuring roller before the indicating mechanism has arrived at'zero, the presser roller will not descend onto the measuring roller because it will be held up b the arm 62 (see Figs. 2, 3
and 8) which wi l engage the plate 64 and hold the same up, thereby holding up the arm 69 and preventing the rock shaft 27 from rotating in the direction which "it would have to rotate in if it were moving in the direction to carry the presser roller down onto the measuring roller.
. n will also be evident that if theresetting stem .46 iso erated while the resser roller 24 is in its epressed positiont earm 62 will raise the plate 64 and operate through the arm 69 to rockthe rocking frame 25 thereby raising the presser roller; in this case the latch 31 wil operate in the usual way to hold the presser roller raised.
It is understood that the embodiment of the invention described-herein is only one of the many embodiments my invention gnay take, and I do not wish to be limited in the practice of my invention nor in my claims, to the particular embodiment set forth.
What I claim is:
1. In a fabric measuring and cost computing machine, the combination of indicating mechanism, a measuring roller for driving the same, a presser roller mounted so as to move toward or from the measuring roller, reset'tin means for resetting the indicating mechamsmto zero, a hand-actuated resetting member for controlling the same, and means actuated by the resetting member to prevent the presser roller from coming against the measuring roller during the resetting movement of the indicating mechanism.
2. In a fabric measuring and cost computing machine, the combination of indicating mechanism, a measuring roller, a clutch through-which the measuring roller drives the indicating mechanism, a presser roller mounted so as to move toward or from the measuring roller, resetting means for resetting the indicating mechanism to zero when the clutch is open, a hand-actuated setting member for opening the clutch to permit the resetting means to reset the indicating mechanism to Zero, and means actuated by the resetting member to prevent the presser roller from coming against the measuring roller during the resetting movement of the indicatin mechanism.
3. n a fabric measuring and cost computing machine, the combination of indicating mechanism, a measuring, roller, a clutch through which the measuring roller drives the indicating mechanism, a presser roller mounted so as to move toward or from the measuring roller, resetting means for resetting the indicating mechanism 'to zero when the clutch is open, a hand-actuated resetting member for opening the clutch to permit the resetting means to reset the indicating mechanism to zero, means actuated by the resetting member to prevent the presser roller from coming against the measuring roller during theresetting movement of the indicating mechanism, and automatic means for holding the clutch open until the indicating mechanism has returned to zero.
4. In a fabric measuring and cost computing machine, the combination of indicating mechanism, a measuring roller, a clutch through which the measuring roller drives the indicating mechanism, a presser roller mounted so as to move toward or from the measurn roller, resetting means for resetting the indicating mechanism to zero when the clutch is open, a hand-actuated resetting member for opening the clutch to permit the resetting means to reset the indicating mechanism to zero, means actuated by the resetting member to prevent the presser roller from coming against the measuring roller during the resetting movement of the indicating mechanism, means for holding the clutch open until the indicating mechanism has returned to zero, and means actuated by the mechanism of the machine as it arrives at the zero position to release the clutchholding means and permit the clutch to close.
5. In a fabric measuring and cost computing machine, the combination of indicating mechanism, a measuring roller for driving the same, a presser roller to cooperate with the measuring roller, a presser roller frame carrying the presser roller and mounted so as to move the presser roller from or down against the measuring roller, resetting means for resettin the indicating mechanism to 'zero, a ban -actuated resetting member for controlling the same, and means actuated b the resetting member to present downward movement of the presser roller frame during the resetting movement of the indicating mechanism.
6. In a fabric measuring and\ cost computing machine, the combination of indicating mechanism, a measurin roller, a. clutch through which the measuring roller drives the indicating mechanism, a resser roller mounted so as to move towar or from the measuring roller, resetting means for resetting the indicating mechanism to zero when the clutch is open, a hand-actuated resetting member for opening the clutch to permit the resetting means to reset the indicating mechanism to zero, means actuated by the resetting member to prevent the presser roller from coming against the measurin roller during the resetting movement of the indicating mechanism, said resetting member having a stem with a notch therein, a detent pawl to engage the notch when the resetting member is moved into a position to open the clutch, and means actuated by a part moving with the indicatin mechanism for actuating the detent paw to permit the clutch to close when the indicating mech anism has returned to zero.
7.111 a fabric measuring and cost computing machine, the combination of indicat' ing mechanism, a measuring roller, a clutch through which the measuring roller drives the indicating mechanism, a presser roller, a pressen'roller frame carrying the same to enable the presser roller to move from or down against the measurin roller, resetting means for resetting the indicating mechanism to zero when the clutch is open, a
hand-actuated stem for opening the clutch to permit the resetting means to reset the indicating mechanism to zero, means actuated by the said stem to prevent the presser roller from coming against the measur ing roller during the resetting movement of the indicating mechanism, detent means for locking the clutch in its open position and automatic means for releasing the said detent means when the indicating mechanism has returned to zero.
8. In a fabric measuring and cost computing machine, the combination of indieatingv mechanism, a measurin roller for driving the same, a resser rol er mounted so as to move towar or from the measuring roller, resetting means for resetting the indicating mechanism to zero, a and-actuated resetting member for controlling the same, and means actuated by the resetting member for moving the presser roller away from the measuring roller.
9. In a fabric measuring and cost com-,
puting machine, the combination of indicating mechanism, a measuring roller for driving the same, a 'presser roller mounted so as to move toward on from the measuring roller, resetting means for resetting the indicating'mechanism to zero, a hand-actuated resetting member for controlling the same, a latch for holding the resser roller away from the measurin rol er, and means actuated by the resetting member for moving the presser roller away from the measuring roller to enable the latch to operate.
