IMPROVEMENT vIN PLANlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,637, dated June 2, 1874; application filed April 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CLINTON A. VEED and JOSEPH I. SOHNETZ, of Racine, in the county of Racine and in the State of IVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planing-Machine; and d0 hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to machines for planing lumber; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of two independent pressure-rollers, whereby two pieces of lumber of different thicknesses may be fed at the same time, and also may admit of a wide board to be similarly dressed. I t also consists in the arrangement of brushes to keep the bearings of the apron clean when at work, all as here inai'ter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referrin g to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a planing-machine embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Figs. 3 and @L transverse vertical sections, of the same.
A represents the frame of a planing-machine. B is the revolving cutter-head of the same, operating above an endless apron coniposed of a series of slats, O O, connected by means of eyebolts or staples c e. This apron passes over pulleys b b, attached to horizontal shafts d d. D D-represent two rollers arranged on a line with each other across the frame of the machine. The outer end of each roller D has its journal-bearing in the outer end of a pivoted lever, E, which is held down on the frame B. by means of a spring, G, eon nected with said lever by a rod, c. The inner end of each roller D has its journal-bearing' in the end of a lever, H, which is pivoted at its other end to a spring-arm, I. The two levers H H are placed side by side, and may move independent of* each other. outer end of each lever H passes a vertical rod, f, upv'ard through an arched beam or frame, J, attached to the main frame A, and a nut, h, adjusted upon the end of each rod. Springs K K are attached to the top of the arched beam, J, and bear one upon each of the nuts h, so as to hold the levers H H down. By these devices two independent pressure` rollers are formed, whereby two pieces of lumber of different thicknesses may be fed at the same time, and the inner end of each arbor may be adjusted up and down upon the frame J, so that the rollers may be independently adjusted at their inner ends, to give the rollers more or less of an inclination for the passage thereunder of boards havin g inclined surfaces. To the frame A is adjustably attached, under- I neath, a cross-bar, L, to which are connected two clamps, M M, by means of springs or spring arms m my, and in each clamp is secured a brush, N. These brushes are so arranged within the endless apron O that they will brush those parts ofthe apron that have their bearings on the pulleys b b, keeping the same clean when at work.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with the independent rollers D D, their levers E and H, rods c, -and springs G, the adjusting-rods f, frame J, nuts h, and springs K, al1constructedsubstantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with the apron O, of the adjustable cross-bar L, springs m m, clamps M M, and brushes N N, all substantially as and for the purposes 'herein set forth.
