Description

G. w. NEWMAN U MEMORANDUM BOOK Filed Feb 15. 192 3 r 3 M T v E k Patented Nov. 18, 1924.
GEORGE WASHINGTON NEW'MAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE AS- SIGNMENTS, T6 NELSON-JONES LOGSE LEAF GOMPAIQ'Y, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A
CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
IiIEItEORANDUlXE BOOK.
Application filed February 15, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Grocer W. EEWHAN, a citizen of the l nited .Eitates. and a resident of the city of Chicago in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a hiiemorandum Book; and I do hereby declare that the follmving is a full, clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a memorandum book of that type embodying a flexible folder in which a memorandum book or pad may be retained and renewed as occasion requires, and comprises novel means for releasably retaining the pad in the folder.
This invention comprises the novel structure hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this in vention, and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the assembled book.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the assembled structure.
Figure 3 is a substantially central section through the assembled book illustrating certain features.
Figure 4 is a f 'agmentary plan view of the folder.
As shown on the drawings:
In the drawings there is shown a folder 1 which may consist of any suitable flexible material such. as leather or th like. Adjacent the edge margins of the folder upon a transverse center line thereof, suitable apertures are provided for receiving the pad attaching means. This pad attaching means is of novel form and consists of a resilient wire rod bent into substantially rectangular form, the ends of which are releasably connected together. In the present instance, this Wire rod is so constructed and as- Serial No. 619,092.
sembled with relation to the cover or folder 1 that one long portion 2 lies outside the back and closely adjacent thereto, with the two short portions 3 and 4 extending inwardly through the apertures in the back, the latter of which is provided with a hook 5 at its end for releasably receiving the end of the other long portion 6 which is suiticiently spaced from the back of the book for retaining a note pad according to the manner illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
From an inspection of Fig. 3, it is evident that the long portion 6 of the pad retaining means is adapted to be flexed for insertion under the hook 5 or removal therefrom much in the same manner as a safety pin. It is therefore possible to release this long portion and allow it to flex upwardly so that the note book or pad may be assembled by a lateral or sidewise movement. This may readily be done by partially separating the leaves at substantially the center of the pad and inserting it under the portion 6 from the edge of the folder by a sidewise or transverse movement. Then by bending the portion 6 downwardly and inserting it under the hook 5, the pad becomes loosely anchored within the folder.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described, a folder; and a pad retaining strip therefor comprising a substantially rectangular loop of resilient wire, having a hook at one end for releasably engaging the other end, one side of said rectangle being exterior of the back of the folder and the ends of said rectangle extending through said folder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses:
GEORGE WASHINGTON NEWMAN.
Witnesses:
