L. E. POLHEMUS COMBINED KNIFE AND PISTOL Filed dem` 5, 1924 Iliff/111willi/[111111111114lll/WM Y E @im @Houle/1p Patented Nov. 18, 1924.
UNITED STATES LOUIS EDWARD POLHEMUS, OF MIAMI, ARIZONA.
COMBINED KNIFE AND PISTOL,
Application filed January 3 To all wim/m.. it n'za- I/ concern:
Be it known that I, Louis E. PoLHnMUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona, have invented a new and useful Combined Knife and Pistol, of which the following is a specification.
T his invention relates to a combined knife and pistol designed primarily for use by hunters, trappers, and campers, one of the objects of the invention being to pro-vide a combination device of this character which is compact and either the knife or pistol portion of which can be used independently of the other without the necessity of disconnecting them although, if desired, one can be used without the other and separately therefrom.
A further object is to provide novel means for assembling the parts, the knife having combined therewith a trigger' for controlling` the iii-ing of the pistol.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the. description proceeds7 the invention resides in the comliiination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without vdeparting from the spirit of the invention.
In. the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on line Fig. 2.
Fig. l is a section on line @-4, Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5, Fig. 3, the knife being removed.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section on line 6-6, Fig. B.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a hollow handle made. integral with a barrel 2 in which is formed a longitudinal slot This slot extends from the rear end of the barrel to a point adjacent the front end thereof where the slot is formed with a lateral extension -i providing a retaining shoulder An annular groove 6 is formed in the barrel between the slot and the front end of the barrel l seated in this groove is a band '7 held" place by a bolt 8 or the like extending trans versely under the barrel and through op- 1924. Serial No. 684,232.
posed portions of the band. The terminals of the 'hand are bowed in opposite directions respectively to provide the jaws 9 of a spring clip. The slotted portion of the barrel 2 is counterbored as indicated at 10 so as to provide an interior seat 11 within the barrel between the front end thereof and the forward end of the slot 3.
The forward portion of the barrel is adapted to receive a cart 1idge the rim of which will bear against the seat 11.
K Slidably and removably mounted within the counterbore is a bolt 12 one end of which is closed and recessed as shown at 18 and is adapted to hold the rim of a cartridge against the seat 11. A longitudinal recess 1d is extended into the bolt from the other end thereof and detachably secured in said end of the bolt is a sleeve l5 in which is slidably mounted a rod 16. @ne end of this rod has a head 17 from which extends a firing pin 1S, said pin being normally extended through an opening 19 formed in the closed end 13 of the bolt 12. A longitudinal keyway 2() is formed in the rod 16 and receives a threaded pin 21 that used for fastening the sleeve 15 to the bolt 12. Thus the rod 16 is held against rotation relative to the bolt although capable of sliding therein. A spring 22 is arranged in the bolt and bears at one end against the head 17 and at its other end against the sleeve. This spring serves to hold the tiring pin 18 normally within the opening 19 and slightly projecting from the bolt as shown. A head 23 is secured to one end of the rod 16 and projects from the open rear end of the. barrel, this head being provided with a knob 24 whereby it can be manipulated readily. An ear 25 is extended radially from the barrel and adapted to be seated within the lateral extension 4 of the slot and to engage the shoulder 5 so as to hold the bolt against withdrawal from the barrel. By rotating the bolt, however7 so as to move the 25 out ofthe slot extension 4, said ear can be withdrawn through the slot and the entire bolt and parts connected thereto can thus be removed.
he head is of the same external diameter as the bolt 12 and bearing against the bottom of this head is the head 26 of a .spring catch 27. This head is located at one end of the. catch while the other end is fastened to the barrel close to the slip band 7. A slot 28 is provided in the barrel for the .spring clip.
recept-ion of the head 26. Obviously, when the head 23 is pulled backwardly the rod 16 is also moved therewith and the spring 22 is placed under coniipression. lVhen the inner end of the head 23 passes the head 26, spring 2T will shift said head 26 into posi.- tion in front of the head so as to hold'it againstreturn movement under the action of its spring 22.
. pivot pin 33 seated in the opening 3l. One
end of the trigger has a head 3d adapted to engage one end of the spring 22 so as to pull di'iwnwardly on the spring when the trigger is actuated by pulling on the other end thereof. For the purpose of holdingthe knife assembled with the handle l the ends of the pin 33 are extended into openings Sli in the sides of the handlel. Finishing plates 35 of hard rubber or the like can be secured to the sides of the handle l as shown.
In using the pistol the head 23 and the bolt l2 are first rotated so as to remove the ear Q5 from the slot extension el after which the bolt and head are drawn backwardly relative to the barrel. rlhis will leave an open space back of the slot extension Ll sufficiently large .toreceive a cartridge. rlhe head and bolt are then returned Ato their normal positions, thus thrusting the cartridge into position within the forward portion of the barrel and with its rim engaging the seat ll. The bolt `is rotated by means of the head'23 to bring ear in engagement with the shoulder 3. Head is the-n pulled baclwardly until its forward end is engaged by the spring controlled head 26. Thus the tiring pin will be held in retracted position and with spring 22 under compression. By pulling on trigger 32, spring 27 will be forced downwardly so as to disengage head 26 from heat W Consequently spring will. force the head and the firing pin forwardly with the result that the cartridge will be exploded.
It will be noted that the knife and the pistol can beI used independently and, if
desired, the knife can be detached from the pistol by removing the face plate 35, and then extracting the pin 33 from the handle l and the openings 3l.
A tool of the class described is especially useful by trappers as it can be employed for shooting trap game :and subsequently for skinning it.
Obviously various changes can be made in the construction of the different parts.
ll'hat claimed is:
l. The combination with a pistol includ ing` a barrel, a handle, and firing mechanism, of aspring catch for holding the iring mechanism set, said catch being connected to the barrel and extending into the handle, a knife detachably connected at one end to the barrel and at its other end within the handle, a trigger detachably and pivotally connected to one end of the knife, and engaging and adapted to actuate the catch to release the tiring mechanism.
The combination with a pistol including a barrel, a handle` and tiring mechanism. of a spring catch carried by the barrel and projecting into the handle for holding the `tiring mechanism set, a clip connected to the barrel, a knife including a handle detachably mounted atone end .in the clip and at its other end in the handle of the pistol, and a trigger pivotally mounted in the knife handle and extending into the pistol handle, said trigger engaging and adapted to .actuate the spring catch to release the .tiring mechanism.
The combination with a pistol including' :a barrel, a handle, and liring mechanism within the barrel, of a spring catch secured to the barrel and extending into the handle, for engaging and holding the firing mech! anism set, a clip carried by the barrel, a knife having a handle detachably engaging the cli-p at one end, the other end ofthe knife being extended into the pistol handle, a removable pivot pin extending transversely through the knife handle and into the sides of the pistol, and a trigger mounted on said pin, and' engaging and adapted to actuate the spring catch to release the firing mechanism. y
'In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto alixed my signature in the presence.. of two witnesses.
LOUIS EDVARD POLHEMUS.
