IMPROVEMENT IN AUGER-STOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,571, dated June 2, 1874; application filed April 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. DARE, of Green Point, in the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Auger-Stop, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improved device for regulating the depth of the bore made by an auger by arresting the motion of the auger at the required point, thereby enabling a-ny number of holes to be bored to a uniform depth.
The invention consists in a pair of jaws hinged or pivoted together, and provided with a locking device for attachment to the auger or bit, so as to revolve therewith, one of the j aws being provided with an adjustable plate, to enable the stop to be adjusted to angers ot' dierent sizes, and the stop being formed with legs to allow the escape of chips during the process of boring.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of an auger or bit with my improved stop applied thereto. Fig. 2 is another side view, showing the stop in section. Fig. 3 is a top view oi the stop with the auger in section. i
A1 A2 represent two jaws, the inner edge of one of which is straight, and the outer edges ot' both maybe of semicircular or approximate form. These jaws are pivoted or hinged together at one side by a pivot, a, and at the opposite side are formed lugs b1 b2. To the lng b2 is pivoted one end of a loop or stirrup, .0, the other end of which engages with the lug b1, and is provided with a set-screw, c, for adjusting the jaws. A semicircular plate, D, having a bar, d, extending radially from its curved edge, is arranged to work in a groove in the inner side of the jaw, with the bar d protruding through a slot in the jaw, so as to enable the plate D to be moved in a direction corresponding with the line of motion of the hinged jaws. when the jaws are closed, the straight edge of the plate D and the stra-ight inner edge of the plate A2 are parallel with each other; and when the jaws are opened to correspond with bits of different thicknesses,
the plate D is adjusted with its straight edge parallel with the straight edge of the jaw A2, as shown in Fig. 1. This stop is applied to an auger or bit by clamping the twisted portion between the jaws A1 A2 at the point where it is desired to arrest the motion of the bit, the stop being held in place, and caused to turn with the bit, by placing the loop O over the lng b2, and tightening the setscrew c, and the plate D being adjusted to correspond with the thickness of the bit. The jaws have legs fon their under sides, which come in contact with the work at the end of the stroke, so as to leave a space between the work and the jaws for the escape of chips during the whole progress of the-work.
This invention will be found useful to workmen who use angers, bits, and other boringtools.
Heretofore, when desired to limit the depth of the bore, it has been customary to bore a hole through a block or bar of wood of such thickness or length as to arrest the motion of the bit at a certain point. It was necessary in such case to have bars and blocks of different lengths and thicknesses to correspond with the different required depths of bore and different sizes of bits.
My invention obviates the necessity for such and similar devices, as it can be readily applied to bits and angers of different sizes by adjusting the plate D, and secured at any de sired point by means of the stirrup and setscrew engaging with the lug b1.
I claiml. rlhe jaws A1 A2, pivoted or hinged to gether at one side by the pivot a, and fastened at the other side by means of the stirrup C and setscrew c, as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the pivoted or hinged jaws, ot" the adjustable plate, whereby the stop may be applied to bits of different sizes, substantially as shown and described.
