Description

C. F. SMITH ADVERTISING DEVICE FOR AUTOMOBILES Nov. 11, 1 24- 1,515,419
Filed May 29, 1922 INVENTOR I ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 11, 1924.
UNITED FICE.
ADVERTISING DEVICE FOR'AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed May 29, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CrJn'rIs F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of VVyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a new useful Advertising Device for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to advertising devices for automobiles, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be attached on the hubs of the wheels of the automobile to bear and display advertising matter.
A further object is to provide the device with facility for its attachment on either the front or rear wheels of the automobile.
A further object is to provide the device with a demountable disk for the purpose of carrying thereon advertising matter, and for producing the ornamental effect of a disk bearing wheel.
I attain these objects by means of the mechanism and combination of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which-Figure 1, is a side elevation of the rear portion of an automobile, and showing my invention operatively attached on the revolving rear wheel; Figure 2, is a vertical section of the device, as applied on the rear wheel and, Figure 3, is a vertical section of the inner cap member of the device and carrying the disk, and attached on the front wheel.
Similar numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings-the numeral 1, designates the rear portion of an automobile and 2, one of the rear wheels thereof. The device consists of a cylindrical inner cup member 3, which is provided inwardly with an annular shoulder 1, which is adapt ed for abutting on the end of the wheel hub 5, and outwardly of the shoulder are internal screw threads which are adapted for engaging the external screw threads 6, on the circumference of the hub and to thereby bring the cap to shoulder upon the end of the hub. The inner end of the cap is provided with an annular flange 7 and inwardly of the flange the cap is reduced circumferentially a suitable distance to form of the reduced portion an annular seat 8, for the seating of the inner race member of a ball bearing 9. Outwardly of the seat 8, the cap is again further reduced a little distance to Serial No. 564,631.
form a bearing 10, to receive thereon an outer cap member hereinafter particularly described. Outwardly of the bearing 10', to the end. thereof the cap is further reduced circumferentially and the reduced end is provided with screw threads 11.
Over the cap 3, is mounted an outer cap 12, which has, at the horizontal axis of the cap 3, an opening of suitable diameter to slidably receive the bearing 10. The cap is of a suitable diameter to provide therein an annular box 13, for the reception of the annular ball bearing member 9, the inner race 14, of which is fitted on the seat 8, with a suitable degree of friction to hold the same in place. On the cap 12, is an annular flange 1.5, and on this flange is attached a disk 16, preferably metal, and upon the disk may be placed any advertising matter to be displayed as the car is driven. On the screw end of the cap 3, is screwed a jam-nut 17 to hold the cap 12, in place and, to hold the nut in place, a cotter pin 18, is extended thru the nut and the screw end of the cap 3. To prevent undue vibration of the disk and to hold the same to prevent its turning with the wheel, a brace 19. is connected between the disk and the fender of the car. In Figure 3, the inner cap is shown in modified form. having threads 20, so that the cap may be screwed on the front axle and carry the disk for advertising matter.
To apply the advertising device on the rear revolving wheel of the automobile, the inner cap 3, is screwed on the hub thereof. after which the ball bearing 9, is mount-ed on the seat 8, and the outer cap is mounted on the inner cap, whereupon the nut 17, is screwed on the screw end of the inner cap, to hold the outer cap in place, the cotter pin 18, is then extended through the nut and the screw end of the inner cup to hold the parts in perfect adjustment, Afterward the disk is attached on the flange 16, on the outer cap, and the brace 19, then connected between the disk and the fender of the car. The rear wheel of the automobile revolves and its hub, of course, also turns, and for this reason the inner cap is mounted on the hub to turn therewith, the ball bearing interposed between the inner and outer caps permits the outer cap to remain stationary and the brace 19, assures the maintenance of the disk in proper immovable position to display any advertising matter which may be placed on the disk. In case of applying the device to the front wheel of the automobile, the modified inner cap is used by providing internal screw threads adapted for the cap engaging; the screw threads of the front axle, which is stationary at all times, the nut 17, and cotter pin 18, being used as in the case of application to the rear wheel. The disk 16, may be arranged on the hub of the wheel to give the wheel the appearance of the conventional disk wheel and, at the same time to display advertising matter while remaining immovable.
Havingdescribed my invention what I claim is I In an advertising device for automobiles, the combination with the vehicle wheel, of a hub cap mounted on the hub of the wheel and having an annular flange disposed vertically of the wheel, a cap member mounted over said hub cap and forming with the flange thereon an annular box for the reception of antifriction devices permitting the hub cap to turn with the vehicle wheel and the second mentioned cap to idle thereon, a
circular disk attached to said second mentiontioned cap, and a tie rod connected to said disk and to the vehicle to hold the disk stationary. 1 v
