APPARATUS FOR COMPRESSING SCRATB METAL.
Application filed October 8, 1923. Serial No. 667,421.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Louis S. TENNE- BAUM and Isnnon FRnrrAe, citizens of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Compressing Scrap Metal; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for compressing scrap metal into blocks or slabs; and its primary object is to construct such an apparatus in such a manner that its cost of construction and operation will be reduced to a minimum. Another object of this invention is to construct a mold box in such a manner that it can be easily opened to remove the finished bundle, and to refill the box with scrap metal.
The improved apparatus consists of an oblong metal box, and hinged to the upper edge of a vertical side plate is a cover plate, and we provide locking devices adapted to secure the meeting edges of these hinged top and side plates together so that there is thereby formed a mold box of a length equal to the length of the stroke of the ram and the length of the bundle to be formed. We also provide a steam or hydraulic ram of usual construction adapted to move horizontally into the mold box to compress the scrap material therein. These and other features of our invention will appear here- 40 after and are illustrated in the drawings on the accompanying single sheet of drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved scrap press with a, portion thereof in central longitudinal section.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse section thereof looking in the direction of the arrow on the line 33 in Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a rear end elevation of the same.
In these drawings A and A indicate the end frame plates of the press, and B B B and B indicate the connecting rods secured in said frames for the purpose of sustaining the strain of the compressing operation,
Secured upon the end frame A is a U- shaped elongated mold box C, said box he ing'secured in an opening in said frame by means of bolts 0 passing through a flange 0 (see Fig. 4:.) Hinged upon one of the upper edges of the box C is a cover plate C by means of the hinges C ,The upper edge of oneof the side plates of the box G is pro vided with an outturned flange c? which serves to stiflenthe side plate, and also to provide a means to secure the cover plate in its closed position.
Upon the cover plate C are secured latches D preferably by means of pivots d, having their free ends so bent that they will engage the under face of the flange-0 so that said cover plate C is retained in its closed position.
To support the free end of the mold box we provide a supporting frame F under said box so that the weight of the plunger E and mold box will notbe entirely sup ported on the bolts 0. Secured to the plunger head E is a piston rod G which extends rearwardly into the cylinder H in which it is secured to a piston H in the usual manner. The cylinder is provided with means for reversing the inlet of power fluid from one end of the cylinder H to the other, and exhausting the used fluid. The means which we prefer is in the form of a threeway valve J enclosed in a casing J having therein an inlet port 7, and two outlet ports 7' and j, the valve J being provided with the usual ports adapted to register with the said inlet and outlet ports'in the usual manner. In Fig. 1 the valve J is shown in position to cause the power fluid to flow into the cylinder H behind the piston H and force t it forward to move the plunger E into the mold box and one of the exhaust ports j is open to allow the fluid behind the piston to flow outward through the exhaust pipe. To reverse the action of the piston the valve J is rotated to the right a quarter turn. The exhaust water can be conducted through the exhaust pipe J 2 to a supply tank (not shown) from which it can be pumped back to the cylinder H under suitable pressure.
The rear end of the box C is closed by means of a door K which is secured in place by means of hinge lugs K on the frame A.

In operation the lid C is lifted and swung back to the position thereof shown by broken lines in Fig. 8. The mold box is then packed full of metal scrap, and the cover plate C is closed down, and the latches D swung to the position thereof shown in Fig. 2. The valved is then turned to the position thereof shown in Fig. 1 and the power fluid flows in behind the piston H thus forcing the plunger E into the mold box and compressing the scrap material in the box into a -Compact bundle. The piston E can be reciprocated several times to hammer the scrap into a compact bundle. When it is desired to remove the bundle of scrap, one of the hinge pins L may be removed and the door K is'swung open as shown in Fig. 2, and the bundle of scrap is forced out of the rear end of the box C through the frame A, by means of the plunger E.
Having thus fully described our invention so that others can utilize the same, we do not desire to be limited to the exact construction and arrangement described, as many modifications can be made therein without departing from the scope of our invention, therefore what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame, a mould box, a cover plate hinged to one side of said box, an out turned flange along the upper edge of one of the side plates of said box, latches pivoted 011 said cover plate adjacent to the free edge thereof and adapted to engage said flange, a door secured on said frame adapted to close one end of said box, a plunger to close the opposite end of said box, and cylinder and piston mechanism to operate said plunger.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame, an opening in one end of said frame, a door to close said opening, a mould box secured in said frame adapted to coincide with said opening, a cover plate hinged to one side-plate of said box, an out turned flange along the upper edge of the opposite side-plate of said box, a latch pivoted adjacent to the free edge of said cover-plate adapted to engage said out turned flange, a plunger in the open end of said box, a cylinder secured on said frame, and piston mechanism to operate said plunger.
