UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
LEWIS SCHROEDER AND JACOB NEWELL, OF FOWLER, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TONGUE-SUPPORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,514, dated June 2, 1874; applicat on filed April 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Lnwrs Sermonnnn and JACOB NEWELL, both of Fowler, Adams county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Tongue Supporters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an improved wagontongue supporter; and consists in an angleiron pivoted to the front of the fore axle, and extending over the rear of the tongue, and provided with a notch to receive a link secured to the tongue, the inner edge of the angle-iron coming in contact with the base of the tongue, where a flanged plate and washer are placed to prevent the displacement of the iron, all so arranged that when the link is in the notch the tongue is held horizontally, and the strain of the weight thereof sustained.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the elements of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same, partly in section.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the front axle of a vehicle, to the lower front central part of which is secured the plate having the ears B, between which is pivoted the lower end of the curved or angle iron D, which extends upward and forward above the upper surface of the tongue a suitable distance, passing between the flanges E, which serve to prevent excessive lateral motion, the parts of the iron immediately adjacent its angle coming in contact with the washer F. The flanges E form a part of the plate H, the rear extremity of which overlaps the end of the tongue I, the
plate H extending somewhat farther forward than and parallel to the iron D, being securely bolted to the upper surface of the tongue, and provided with the arch L, in which is placed the lower side of the link M, the upper edge of which fits over the iron D, and enters the notch N out in the upper surface of the iron D, and inclining downward and forward, its lower surface being at such distance in rear of and above the arch L that when the tongue I is in the operative position, the link is drawn. taut. In the present instance the link is of steel and angular, having two parallel sides, and a wider base than top, so that by elevating the tongue it will clear the notch N, and free the tongue.
This form of link is preferred, but others of ordinary shape will serve.
The use of the washer I" is optional, but expedient, since the height of the tongue may be regulated by its thickness.
That we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bent iron D, provided with the notch -N, in combination with the link M, secured to the tongue I, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing improvement in wagon-tongue supporters, as above described, we have hereunto set our hands and seals.
