Patented New. 11, 1924s WILLIAM ROBERTSON, OF DE'I ING WORKS, OF DETROI R011, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO NORTHERN ENGINEER- T, MIGHIGAN. A CORPOBATION, OF MICHIGAN.
CRANE,
Application filed May 22,
RoBnnTsoN,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Detroi and State of t, in the county of Wayne Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cranes, of which fication, reference the following is a specibeing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention electric travelling ject the provision of bridge motor and housing between the motor and the support for the for the gearing relates to cranes of the type and has for its oba novel combined bridge drive shaft extending longitudinally thereof. Other objects of the invention reside in adjustably supporting this combined support and housing upon the bridge of the crane, and in the novel features of construction and combinations rangements of parts as more after set forth.
and arfully herein- In the drawings: F1gure 1 1S a plan view of a portion of an electric travelling crane embodying my invention;
Figure 2 1s a thereof;
perspective view of a part Figure 3 is a side elevation of the comblned motor support and gear housing showing the same The electric t bridge 1 formed by the V the trucks 4 at opposite ends of ers 2 and 3,
secured in place. ravelling crane has the parallel main girdthe bridge and supporting the same, and
the auxiliary and spaced from girder 5 extending parallel to the main girder 3. The
crane 1s propelled over its tracks through the drive shaft 6 of the bridge between and auxiliary gi extending longitudinally the main girder 3 rder 5, this shaft being journalled in brackets 7 upon the main glrder.
8 is an electric motor connected to the drive shaft 6 through the reduction gearing 9.
For supporting at the same the electric motor 8 and time housing the reduction gearing 9, I have provided the combined support and hou 11 for carrying sing 10 having the base the motor and the integral housing 12 at one side of the base for inclosing the reduction gearing. llxtending from the base 11 and the rearwar are the forward flanges 13 d flange 14:, which have 1922. Serial No. 562,919.
' The combined motor-support and hous-v ing is adjustable vertically of the bridge, its forward and rearward flanges being engageable with the auxiliary and main girders in different positions of vertical adjustment, and being adapted to be secured thereto in these positions as by bolts. This adjustment is made possible by removing the plate 17 and lowering the combine support and housing, or by raising the auxiliary and main girders, bolts through the auxiliary girder 5 engage the upper bolt holes of the forward flanges 13 and the bolt hole in the rear-. ward flange 14 registers with an opening in the main girder 3 which is not shown but which. lies in substantially the same horizontal plane as the opening in .the anxiliary girder 5, to receive the'bolt.
The combined support and housing is also carried upon the bridge by means of the plate 17 secured to the lower flanges of the auxiliary andmain girders, the depending fianges 15 of the combined sup port and housing being engageable with this plate in one position of vertical adjustment of the combined support and housing relative to the bridge or being carried upon the plate through intermediate shims.
With this arrangement, as described, the combined support for the electric motor and housing for the reduction gearing between the electric motor and the crane driving shaft serves to reinforce the bridge of the crane and at the same time provides a compact arrangement whereby the motor with the reduction gearing may be more quickly pact support and housing is vertically adjustable relative to the bridge to provide for various limited differences in construction. Also, the cover of the housing porfrom the base 11;
so that the tion of the combined support and housing is removable to permit of ready access to the reduction gearing.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In an electric travelling crane, the combination with a main girder, of an auxiliary girder extending substantially parallel thereto, a drive shaft extending longitudinally of said main girder in between said main girder and auxiliary girder, an electric motor, gearing between said electric motor and drive shaft for driving the latter from theformer, and a combined support for said motor and housing for said gearing between. said main and auxiliary girde and directly carried by said girders.
2. In an electric travelling crane, the eombination with the bridge and trucks at opposite ends thereof, of a drive shaft extend ing longitudinally of the bridge, an electric motor, gearing between said motor and drive shaft for driving the latter from the former, and a combined support for said motor and housing for said gearing adjustably mounted upon said bridge.
In an electric travelling crane, the combination with a main girder and an auxiliary girder extending substantially parallel thereto and spaced therefrom, of a drive shaft extending substantially parallel to and between said girders, an electric motor, gearing between said motor and drive shaft for driving the latter from the former, and a combined support for said'motor and housing for said gearing adjustably vertically secured at its opposite ends to said girders. 4;. In anelectric travelling crane, the combination with a main girder and an auxiliary girder extending substantially parallel thereto and spaced therefrom, of a drive shaft extending substantially parallel to and an electric motor bebetween said girders,
gearing ,between said tween said girders,
motor and drive shaft for driving the latter from the former, and means for supporting said motor and inclosing said gearing comprising a base and an integral housing for the lower portion of said gearing, and also a removable cover cooperating with said housing, and means for adjustablysupportmg said base upon said girders.
5. In an electric travelling crane, the combination with a main girder, of an auxiliary girder extending substantially parallel thereto, a. drive shaft extending tially parallel to and betweensa'id girders, an electric motor, gearing between said motor and drive shaft for driving the latter from the former, a combined support for said motor and housing for said gearing comprised of one integral piece lorniing the support for said motor and base and housing for the lower portions of said gearing, a removable cover cooperating with the lions ing portion of said integralpiece,and means for ,adjustably supporting said support and housing upon said girders. i
6. In an electric travelling crane, the combination with a main girder, of an auxiliary girder extending substantially parallel thereto, a drive shaft extending substantially parallel to and between said girders, an electric motor, gearing etween saidmotor and drive shaft for driving the latter from the former, a combined"support tor said motor and housing for said gearing comprising a base with reinforcing'flanges thereunder, an integral housing for the lower portion of said gearing, with reinforcing webs extendingbetween the bottom or" said housing and the top of said base,
a removable cover cooperating with said housing, and means for ad ustablysupporting said base upon saidigirders.
In testimony whereofI afiix my signature.
WILLIAM ROBERTSON.
