SAND-CUTTING MACHINE.

Be it known that I, HOWARD,L. =WADS- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of-Guyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sand-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions. I
The present invention, relating, as indicated, to sand cutting machines is particularly directed to a sand cutting machine of the crane type which is not, however, wholly supported from a crane, but is merely drawn over the ground by a crane or other overhead carriage. Such a machine is of particular advantage in large foundries for cutting molding sand as it avoids the expense of providing any propelling means for the machine, and the ordinary crane which is usually available in large foundries can be used for this purpose. This allows the machine proper to be extremely simple and inexpensive in construction.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of the machine; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is another side elevation on a reduced scale showing the machine in connection with an overhead crane.
The machine consists of a framework 1, comprising spaced arms 2, mounted on traction wheels 3, and supporting therebetween a sand cutting cylinder 4. The sand cutting cylinder consists of spaced plates 5, between which are mounted a series of radially disposed blades 6, all of which are straight and parallel to the axes of the cylinder. The frame narrows as it extends forwardly and upwardly from the cutting cylinder, and on this narrow center portion of the frame 7, is mounted a motor 8, and which is connected by means of sprockets 9, 10, 11 and 12, and chains 13' and 14;, to the cylinder 4: for rotating the same.
The frame l is supported from a cab of a locomotive crane by means of a pivoted Specification of Letters Patent.

The operation of this sand-cutting mechanism will be readily understood from this description. The mecha ism will be brought to a position directly in front of the pile of sand to be out, and'will then be pulled by the crane over this pile. The motor 8 is operated to rotate the cutting cylinder, while the height of the cutting cylinder may be adjusted by winding in on the cable 19 to support the lower end of the frame at the desired level. The support 15 is rigidly attached to the crane cab, thus forming a rigid axis for the adjustment of the sand-cutting machine. 7
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention v 1. Asand cutting machine comprising a pair of traction, wheels, a frame pivotally mounted thereon, a sand cutting cylinder mounted on said frame on one side of said wheels, and means connected to drive said cylinder, said means being mounted on said frame on the other side of said wheels from said cylinder, and assisting to balance said cylinder.
2. A sand cutting machine comprising a pair of traction wheels, a frame pivotally mounted thereon, a sand cutting cylinder mounted on said frame on one side of said wheels, means connected to drive said cylinder, said means being mounted on said frame on the other side of said wheels from said cylinder and assisting to balance the same, and a handle attached to said frame adjacent said means, said handle allowing the user to tilt said frame and thereby adjust the elevation of said cylinder.
