J. B. GURY CLOTH CUTTING MACHINE vFiled Aug. 16. 1920 Ill.

saines? tlldl'l@ STATES PATENT @lilll JOI-IN B. GURY, l:1 ST. LOUIS, MSSOURI.
Application filed August 16, 1920.
To allie/1.0m 'it 12mg/ concern.'
Be it known that I. JOHN B. Goni, a citi- Zen of the TJnited States, residing inthe city of St. Louis and State oi Missourn have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cloth-Cutting Machines, of which the tollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to cloth cutting machilies and more particularly to such nia-- chines ot the rotary cutting disk type. lt has for its objects to produce a simple and eiiicient guard for the cutting disk which may be readily adjusted to suit piles ot' cloth of various thicknesses to be cut; to provide for quickly shitting the guard out of the way in order to allow the pile of cloth to be lifted as occasion requires during the operation of the machine; to correlate the guard with a grinding device which, as a part of the machine, is capable ot being moved into co-operative relation to the cutting disk while the machine is in operation, whereby the guard is automatically moved out of the way as the grinding element is brought into engagement with the cutting disk and to attain certain advantages as will later more fully appear.
The invention consists in the parts and in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification and illustrating a practical adoption of the invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation ot a cloth cutting machine with invention incorporated therein; and Figure 2 is a fragmentary view, partly in section, showing details ot the structure.
Referring now to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the base or toot plate of the machine which slides on the table under the pile oiI cloth to be cut. On this Yloot plate is a standard 2 on which the rotary cutting disk 3 is mounted. At the top ot the standard is an electric motor Ll, which, through a system of gears (not shown) drives the cutting disk, while from the rear extends han dle 5 for guiding the machine on the table.
Slidable in a bracket G on the standard 2 is an arcuate or segmental guard 7 which is located close to the edge ot the cutting disk 3. rlhis guard has a series of peripheral teeth S with which a sector 9 engages.
The sector 9 is loosely mounted to rotate CLOTH-CUTTING MACHINE.
Serial No, 403,789.
on a stud 10 which is supported on an arm 11 ot the standard 2.and is held troni rotation by a set screw 12.
Ayoke frame 13 has a pair of cooperating legs 14, 15, hinged at their ends on the stud 10, while another' oppositely extending pair ot legs l16, 17, have grinding rollers 18, 19, journalled thereon with a slight space 2O between them. The yoke trame is distorted whereby to bring the pair ot rollers in angular position so that the cutting disk is gripped on both sides as the cutting edge is straddled b y' said grinding rollers.
A handle 21 is provided :tor convenience in manipulating the yoke frame, while the latter is yieldably held in raised position by a spring 22. This spring is preferably formed and applied as shown. That is, one end is attached to a stud 23 on the standard 2, while its opposite end portion is reduced in diameter and attached to a stud 24 on the leg 15.
The leg 14 of the yoke trame has a hub extension 25 on which is a sleevei26 provided with a set screw 27 which is preferably at an angle and engages a corresponding peripheral groove 28 in said hub extension, whereby7 to force the sleeve against the leg 141 as the set-screw is tightened. This sleeve 26 has an arm 2on against which a pin 29 on the sector 9 is pressed by a spring 30 coiled around the stud 10 with one end portion engaging the set-screw 12 and the other end portion bearing upon said pin 29.
The yoke trame 13 has a lateral extension 31 which serves as an abutment to cooperate with stops to support the frame in different positions.
In the raised position ot the trame the eX- tension 31 engages a spring stop on an arm 33 of a collar 3&1 which is 'fastened to the stud 10 by a set-screw 35. The collar 3stA has a second arm 36 in which is an adjustable stop or screw 37 to be engaged by the extension 31 to limit the engaging relation of the grinding rollers to the cutting disk. T he yoke traine may also be held in an intermediate position by a. spring tongue 38 which is fastened at one end to the end ot the stud 10, as at 39, and has a small protuberance l0 at its opposite end to engage the end of the extension 31. The spring tongue 38 while exerting sufficient force to hold the yoke frame in the neutral or intermediate posilos tion is yieldable when the extension 3l isk brought forcibly into contact with the protuberance 40.
Normally, the yoke frame is .in raised -position as shown by full lines in Figure l of the diawiiig. By loosening the set-screw 27, the sleeve 26 may be rotated on the hub eX- teiision 25, and by the arrangement of the spring 30 the sector 9 follows accordingly. lVhen the end of the guard 7 is brought to the desired elevation the set-screw 27 is tightened. Then if itis desired to raise the 'guard it is only .necessaryto lower the yoke vframe 18, and `if it is desired to hold the yoke frame in lowered Vposition it may be engaged with the `protulcerance a() of the spring tongue B8.
vfOn the up "stroke of the 'yoke frame the movement of Ythe "sector "9 .and guard '17 kis "positive yas soon as lthe arm 26a and Apin 29 engage, so that the guard is .al-
ways brought back to its proper lower position. y'On Vthe othei"lia.nd, on the down vstroke of the yoke 'frame the pin ,29 yis held in contact with vthe '-arni 26aN until there is sufficient resistance on theguard'7, lwhereupon thespring 30 willyield and permit the yoke to 'continue traveling downward when the guard ceases ito move upward.
Obviously, the structure admits of considerable modification within the spirit of the invention, .and it is therefore not specifically limited to that shown in the drawing.
That is claimed is:
l. In a cloth cutting machine having a rotary rcutting disk, anai'cuate guard movable peripherally of said cutting disk and having lperipheralgear teeth, a shaft having a sector rotatable thereon in mesh with said teeth of .the'guard, a frame hinged .on said shaft and having a grinding element to engage said Ycutting disk, an adjustable stop on said frame, a spring yfor yieldably holding said sector in engagement with said stop, a
spring for yieldably holding said frame in raised position, and means for releasably holding said frame in lowered and neutral positions.
2. In a cloth cutting machine having a rotary cutting disk, an arcuate guard movable peripherailly 4of said cutting disk and having peripheral gear teeth, a shaft havinga fsector rotatable fieely thereon in mesh with said teeth of the guard, a frame hinged on saids'haft and lhaving a grinding element thereon to engage said cutting disk, aspring for yieldably vholding vsaid frame ,normally in said position, a stop lfor yieldably 'holding said frame iii an intermediate `lowered position, a stop/adjustable on said frame rotatably about the axis of said shaft,v an adj'ustablerstop lfor limiting the lowerinostposition of said frame, and a Aspringfor yieldablyho'lding said sector in Vengagement with .saidrotatablyadjustable stop on said frame.
3. In a cloth Acutting 'inacii'in'e haiing a rotary cutting disk, an arcuate guard movable vperip'herally of said cutting disk and having peripheral gear teeth, a/shafthaving a sector rotatable rfreely thereon in mesh with said teeth of the guard, a frame hinged on said shaft and having a grinding element vthereon .to engage 'said cutting disk, a coiled spring secured .at one end to a stationary vpart of the machine and at its opposite end `ing said frame in an intermediate lowered position, .an adjustable stop on said frame `rotatable about the axis of said shaft, and a spring for holding said sector yieldably in engagement with said .last mentioned stop.
