SAFE-LOCK v ATTACHMENT.
Application filed July 26, 1921. Serial No. 487,761.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDDIE ANDREW SEESSENGOOD, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Noble, in the county of Richla-nd, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Safe-Lock Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to safe lock attachments and has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby when the safe lock is burnt out of the door, or the lock spindle driven out 01 the door mechanism adjacent the safe lock will be actuated in such a manner as to prevent the sliding of the door bolts and opening of the door.
A further object is to provide an auxiliary lock for safe doors, which lock comprises a rockable member carried by the door and normally held in inoperative position by means of a flexible member having one of its ends anchored and the body thereof passing over a member adjacent the safe lock bolt and under tension Also to provide means whereby when the pliable member is broken or severed the rockable member will be so moved and held in operative position whereby the bolts of the sai e'doorvwill be prevented :t'rom movement in an unlocking direction.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from'the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of safe door in a flange 2 of which horizontally disposed bolts 3 are slidably mounted for movement to a locking or unlocking position. The safe door 1 is provided with a conventional form of lock casing 1, in which casing isdisposed lock mechanism for controlling the movement of the lock bolt 5, which lock bolt moves in a horizontal plane and as said bolt 5 is connected at 6 to the vertically disposed bolt controlling bar .7, it will be seen that bolts 3 will move simultaneously with the lock bolt 5 and be unlocked therewith. The vertically disposed lock bolts 8 are actuated through the medium of hell crank connections 9 with the upper and lower slidable bolts 3. It has been found that burglars when entering a safe usually drive out the lock spindle 10 or burn the lock out entirely with an acetylene burner, after which the bolts are easily manipulated for opening the door.
The mechanism hereinafter described is particularly designed to normally be out of operative position, however if the lock is burnt from the door, or the lock spindle 1O driven from the lock said mechanism will be thrown into operative position in such a manner that the connecting bar 7 will. be prevented from movement thereby preventing the bolts 3 and 8 from being moved, and consequently the door prevented from. being opened. The auxiliary locking mechanism comprises a bar 11 secured at 12 to the flange 2 at a point remote from the lock casing 4:. Rockably mounted on a pin 13 carried by a horizontally movable member 14 on the bar 11, is a lever 15. Said horizontally movable member 14 has a threaded connection 1 1 with the bar" 11, consequently the member 14 may be moved in a horizontal plane. The arm 16 of the lever 15 normally registerswith an elongated aperture 17 in a lug 18 carried by the vertically disposed bar 7 ,theref reupon an inward or outward movement of said bar 7 the arm 16 of the rockable lever 15' will not interfere with the inward or outward movement of the bar 7 incident to the operation of the lock under normal conditions. Connected to the end of the arm 19 of the lever 15 at 20 is a downwardly extending cord or Wire 21, which cord or wire extends over the inner end of the lock spindle 16 and has its end anchored at 22 to the flange 2. The cord 21 is tensioned and held tensioned by means of the coiled spring 23 which surrounds a pin 24 and is interposed between the arm 19 and the upper side of the bar 11, however said coiled spring is held in compressed position by the tension of the cord 21 and the pin 24 which is piv oted at 25 to the lever 15 is held in the aperture 26 of the bar 1.1 by said cord. The bar 11 is provided with a transversely disposed aperture 27 which comn'umicates with the aperture 26 and into which slot 27 the pin 24 is forced by means of a lug 28 carried by the slidable bar 29, which bar i slidably mounted in the cylindrical cl'ian'iber 30 of the bar 11 and is limited in its out ward movementby the engagement of the shoulder 31 with the annular flange 32. Bar 29 is forced outwardly after the pin 24 has been raised by means of the coiled spring 33 disposed within the chamber 34 of the bar 29 and interposed between the bottom of said chamber and the door 1 thereby exerting an inward movement on the bar 29 at all times It will be seen that if the cord 21 is severed or released that the spring 23 will force the arm 19 of the lever 15 upwardly until the pin 24 is out of the aperture 2, at which time the bar 29 will be moved by the spring 33 and its lug 28 which engages the pin 24 will be moved inwardly thereby forcing the pin 24 which has cleared the aperture 26 into the slot 27. During the above action it will be seen that the end of the arm 16 has been moved downwardly slightly and inwardly thereby positioning the arm where it will engage the 'lug 18 and prevent movement of the bar 7 in the direction of the arrow a, hence the opening of the door will be prevented. even though the lock has been burned from the door or the lock spindle driven out of the bolt.
The bar 11 will be differently positioned on different safe doors, therefore when a safe is sold or the device attached thereto, its act position will not be known except by authorized persons, therefore when unauthorized persons attempt to open the same they will have to know the location of the auxiliary locking mechanism. After an attempt to open the safe by an unauthorized person a hole is drilled in the door 1 by someone who knows the exact location of the bar 11. lVhen the hole is drilled, said hole is drilled in registration with the interior of the spring38, and after so drilled a bolt 35 is inserted through the hole and threaded into the threaded aperture 36 by means of which bolt an outward pull may be inuparted on the member 29 thereby restoring the lug 28 to normal position and allowing the pin 24 to be again positioned in the aperture 26.
From the above it will be seen that an. auxiliary locking device for safe doors is provided which is simple in construction, and so constructed that entrance to the safe will be prevented after an unauthorized person has attempted to force their way into the same.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a safe door, sliding bolt-s carried by said. door, a controlling bar connecting the sliding bolts for moving the same, a lock carried by the door, of an auxiliary locking mechanism for said door, said locking mechanism comprising a flexible member having one of its ends anchored, said flexible member extending over the lock spindle, the other end of the flexible mem her being connected to a pivoted lever, one end of which registers with an aperture in the controlling bar and is held in registration by spring means and spring means whereby upon severing of the flexible member the end of the pivoted lever will be held out of registration with the aperture in the controlling bar.
' 2. The combination with a safe door, sliding bolts carried by said door, a controlling bar connecting the sliding bolts for moving the same, a lock carried by the door, of an auxiliary locking mechanism for said door, said locking mechanism comprising a flexible member having one of its ends anchored, said flexible member extending over the lock spindle, the other end of the flexible member being connected to a rockable lever, said lever being rockable in a vertical plane and pivotally mounted for movement in a hori- Zontal plane, one end of said lever being in registration with an aperture in the controlling bar, spring means for normally maintaining said end of the lever in registration with the aperture, a horizontally movable member, a member carried by the lever for normally holding the horizontally movable member against movement, spring means for moving said horizontally movable member, said spring means forming means whereby upon release of the flexible member the end of the pivoted lever will be held out of reg istration with the aperture in the controlling bar.
