it known that I, ALLEN F. Fnas riin', "a citizen of the United States, residing at Beams-1 51 1ureeonnty of 'Boi'i l'dei' and "State or Colorado, have ihveirte'Clce1ta-i11 new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the renowin isa specification;
This ilivention relates to combs and more particularly to an im roved court for drying, straightening, our ing and waving hair.
@he of the objects is to provide a comb of this cl'raracter which will be so constructed as to provide means whereby the comb may be mounted over a heater and held supporting element adapted to be manually adjusted to support the comb in desired position.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a comb of this character which will have the handle insulated from the comb whereby the handle will be prevented from being heated when the comb is being heated.
Other objects of the invention will appear upon consideration of the following detailed description and accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the comb constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a detailed view showing the adjustable supporting element,
Figure 5 is a section taken on the line 55 of Figure 1,
Figure 6 is a cross section taken on the line 66 of Figure 1, and
Figure 7 is a cross section taken on the line 7-7 of'Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the shank 1 of the comb is substantially cylindrical in form and the teeth 2 extend from one side thereof and their marginal edges merge into the rounded surface of the shank as shown to advantage in Figures 5 and 6. This provides a substantially triangular shaped tooth so formed with the shank 1 as to prevent the hair from breaking and being pulled out while the comb 1s being used and to assist in the curhng and waving of the hair. The shank 1 has a connecting extension 3 which is fitted into a longitudinal socket in the handle 4. A bolt 5 extending from the free end of the handle is connected to the extension 3, thus holding the shank of the comb in position in the handle. The socket in which the extension 3 is mounted is lined with a lining of asbestos or other insulating material and the metal ferrule 4 on the end of the Handie is also lined with asbestos to effectively insulate the lr'andle against the heat trans mitted to the shank when the comb is being heated.
Mounted upon the backer the shank 1 "are the two supporting arms 6 and 7 which are pivotally mounted on pivot pins 8 and 9 respectively, thus permitting the members 6 and 7 'to befswu-n-g' outwardly to the position show-n by 'd'otte clflihes in Figure 4'. An opefratnrg rod It) is provided which consists "of the rod 11 slidably mounted in a slot 12 in the handle and provided with a finger grip 13 adapted to be engaged by the finger of the user whereby the rod may be longitudinally moved. The opposite end of the rod 11 is provided with laterally extending fingers 1 1 having slots 15 to receive the connecting pins 16 which are carried by the supporting arms 6 and 7 at a point near the pivot pins 8 and 9. By longitudinally adjusting the operating rod, the supporting members 6 and 7 may be swung inwardly or outwardly to the desired adjusted position.
To maintain the parts in adjusted position, notches 17 are provided in the shank 3, any of which notches may be engaged by the catch pin 18 carried by the shank 10 of the adjusting rod, and the catch 18 is held in any one of the notches by a fiat spring 19 fixed to the handle and extending into the slot 12 where it may engage the rod 11 of the adjusting element. By manipulating the finger grip 13 and moving the operating rod longitudinally, the supporting members 6 and 7 may be swung inwardly or outwardly as desired so that supporting extensions will be provided to rest upon the heater for supporting the comb in position above the heater while it is being heated. When the comb is to be used for drying, curling or waving hair, the extension members 6 and 7 will be swung back to closed position so that they will be out of the way and permit the comb to be readily 1nanipulated. It will be noted, by referring to Figures 5 and 6, that the contour of the supporting members 6 and 7 is such as to conform to the rounded configuration of the shank 1 of the comb, so that they will not catch in the hair while the comb is being used.
Minor changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a shank, a handle,'a connecting extension carried by the shank and fastened in the handle, teeth formed on the shank, supporting members comprising oppositely movable fingers pivotally mounted on the shank, an operating rod, means to connect the operating rod to the said supporting members, and a finger grip formed on the operating rod whereby the latter may be longitudinally adjusted to move the supporting members toward or away from the said shank.
2. A comb comprising a shank, a handle, a connecting extension formed on the shank and fastened in the handle, means to insulate the said connecting extension from the handle, an operating rod slidably mounted in the handle and provided With a finger grip, and adjustable supporting element bers pivotally mounted on the shank and adapted to extend in opposite directions therefrom, an operating rod, laterally extending fingers carried by the rod and connected to the said supporting members, the said rod being longitudinally adjustable, a finger grip for adjusting the said rod, and means to lock said operating rod in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ALLEN F. F EASTER.
Witnesses T. H. NICHOLS, Mrs. LELIA M. THoMPsoN.
