Definitions

  • My invention consists of curved iron clamps attached to the cross-bars of a wagon-brake, in which the wood to form the shoe is placed. These clamps are arranged in pairs on said block, and are provided with bolts at each end, which are lengthened or shortened by thumbscrews. The spaces between are filled with short pieces of wood, which forms material for friction, and against which the rim of the wheel acts, and these strips can be easily renewed along the road at any time when worn out without the aid of a craftsman.

  • These clamps are held by bolts D, provided with thumb-nuts E, so that the jaws of the clamps can be distended or drawn together to conform to the inequalities of the strips F employed for the brake.
  • This brake will be found to be very convenient and cheap, and is admirably adapted to localities where it is difficult to obtain matched strips of wood.

Description

E- G. LUNC'EFURD.
Brakes for Vehicles Patented May 26,1874.
(2' ,4. jaw f d AM H/070-l. ITHOERAPll/L (fa-M Yf/ossm/u's moans) ELBRIDGE G. LUNGEFORD, OF YOUNTVILLE, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF PART OF HIS RIGHT TO A. O. MODONDL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRAKES F OR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,408, dated May 26, 1874; application filed March 30, 1574.
My invention consists of curved iron clamps attached to the cross-bars of a wagon-brake, in which the wood to form the shoe is placed.
In the drawings, A represents the brakeblock, to which is attached the curved clamps B by means of the bolts 0. These clamps are held by bolts D, provided with thumb-nuts E, so that the jaws of the clamps can be distended or drawn together to conform to the inequalities of the strips F employed for the brake.
This brake will be found to be very convenient and cheap, and is admirably adapted to localities where it is difficult to obtain matched strips of wood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A brake-block composed of the clamps B,
nuts and bolts D E, and strips F, all com-- bined substantially as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
