SMOKING PIPE.
Appflication filed ,February 19,1923. Serial No. 620,018.
- through from the bowl to the mouth stem,
said passage being disposed within a pipe stem of the ordinary length.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a pipe of this nature having a stem with a coil passage therein.
Another object of the invention is to pro-'' vide a pipe of this nature having a stem which may be readily assembled and disassembled for cleaning and repair purposes.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a pipe of this nature which is simple and efficient in construction, reliable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other ob-- jects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features ofconstruction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. I
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have. shown inthe accompanying drawing that form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the va-- rious instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the drawing- F igure 1 is a longitudinal section through i the smoking pipe embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevation of the passage forming device, the end thereof being shown in section,
Figure 3 is a detail perspective of the inner tube,
'Figure i is a detail perspective of the mouth piece, and t Figure 5 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 5-5of Figure 1 looking in the directionof the arrow, said view being taken on an enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the pipe consists of the usual. bowl 1 having the concave bottom 2. A stem 3 is suitably attached to the bowl 1 and communicates therewith through a small opening 4 in the side of the bottom 2. In the bore of the stem 3 there is disposed a passage forming device 5 which is in the form of an elongated bar having a spiral grooved peripl1ery.. This bar extends throughout the bore of the stem into a mouth piece 6 suitably mounted on the stem. A tube 7 may be used with the passage forming device 5 if desired and is preferable especially when the device 5 is-construc ted of wood. This tube is constructed with a conical shaped entrance 8 so as to provide a restricted opening 9 and a space or pocketlO is provided between this end 8 and the opening 4 so that moisture may collect therein.
This spiral passage groove provided on the device. 5 permits of'a cool smoke and has all the advantages of the long stemmed pipe besides being compact in structure and giving the appearance of an ordinary or common pipe witlfa short stem.
An extension 11 is provided on the end of the device 5 adjacent the mouth piece 6 in order that pliers or the like may be engaged therewith for pulling the device 5 -from out of the bore of the stem 3 when it is desired to clean thisdevice.
It will be seen from the foregoing that in accordance with my present invention I have provided a smoking pipe having a stem provided with an-elongated passage so that the smoke drawn therethrough will have'an op portunity of becoming cool so as to not burn the tongue of the user and in which the nicotine and other liquid will be settled or absorbed in a portion of the passage before it has an opportunity of reaching the mouth of the user. The pipe also is compact in structure, durable, and may be manufactured the invention which will give in practice sat,
isfactory and reliable results, and it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. A smoking pipe of the class described includinga bowl having a concavc d bottom, a stem having a bore, a month piece mounted on' the stem, said concaved bottom of the bowl provided with an opening in its side, leading into the bore ofthe stem, a tube disposed within the bore and having an end of conical formation-With an opening adjacent the firstmentioned opening and spaced therefrom so as to form a pocket, a rod disposed within the tube and constructed with v a spiral grooved periphery leading into the month piece.
2. A smoking pipe of the class described including a bowl, a stem integrally extend ing from the bowl and provided with a bore,
said bowl and stem provided with a restricted opening between the interior of the bowl and the bore of the stem, a mouthpiece attached to the stem, a tube Within the bore of the stem having a restricted opening a CHARLES W. NEISW'ENDER.
