- WILLIAM SHIELDS, OF MOUNT STERLING, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ANAL TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,318, dated May 26, 1874; application tiled April/1, 1874.
To all whom fit may concer-2L:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SHiELDs, of Mount Sterling, in the county of Brown and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Iinproved Truss, of which the follo wing is a speciiication:
The accompanying drawing shows' a perspectivc View of my improved truss for diseases of the rectum.
The object of my invent-ion is to furnish a conveniently and easily applied truss or bandage for the purpose ot' treating and curing successfully diseases of the rectum. My invention consists of a band placed around the waist to which the shoulder-straps are applied adiustably in such a manner that they cross at the back and connect between the limbs, carrying there a raised ring of suitable material, which is tted by the buckles of the straps tightly on the anus. y
In the drawing, A represents the main strap or band, which is placed around the waist and buckled there to retain its position. rIhe straps B are applied loosely by loops a to the waistband A, cross on the back, pass then over the shoulders and down under the waistband between the limbs to the rear extensions B of the straps. Front and rear buckles b serve to adjust the straps to the exact length required. rIhe connect-ing part of straps B is provided with a round aperture, d, of suitable size, which is strengthened by a raised ring, C, of leather, glass, metal, or other suitable material, and intended to be placed into exact position on the anus by means of the straps B,
The truss may be applied in some cases only temporarily during the evacuation of the bowels, or may be worn constantly during the dayas in the case of a prolapsus recti-in upright position.
The use of the rectal truss strengthens the sphincter ani muscles, and may be applied in all cases of prolapsus recti, enlargement ot' the heinorrhoidal veins and tumors ot' the anus, or polypi of the rectum.
The continual application of' the truss will permanently improve and cure diseases ofthe rectum and chronic diarrhea, and give thereby relief to a number ot' persons who are at present unable to iiud alleviation for their sut ferin gs.
I am aware the use ot' a waistband, shoul der, and thigh straps is not new; but am unaware ofthe previous use of a perforated disk as an anal pad or support which can be worn during defecation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent- The combination, with the` ordinary waistband and shoulder straps A B, ot' the subjacent limb-strap B', bifurcated in both directions from the raised perforated disk O, as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM SHIELDS.
