To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, OTTO DLLECKMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Deposit Apparatus.I of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in safety-deposit. apparatus for banlr vaults and similar purposes. One of its objects is to pre vent the accidental or intentional insertion of a safety-deposit bor belonging for insta-nce to one person into the cell or vault compartment to Which another person possesses the key. Another object is to provide such apparatus adapted to be conveniently manufactured and applied to either old or new vaults. Another object is to provide simple and inexpensive apparatus for the purpose adapted to be supplied in considerable numbers or combinations, no two of which can be interchanged through error or design to place the propertyv ot one person at the disposal of another. My iuvention also comprises certain details of torni, combination and arrangement, all ofr which Will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which:

The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention in which represent a series of safety-deposit compartments or cells located along the interior Walls of a bank vault, said cells being separated one from another by means of steel vertical Walls 16 and horizontal .va-lls 17 and provided With vertical inner end Walls 18, usually the main Wall of the bankvault.

Each of said cells is provided with a door 19 hinged at 20 to one side Wall and provided With a lock 21 to lock the door across the front of the cell to close the cell. The

Each of said cells is provided With a container or safe-deposit box 22 adapted to closely tit Within the cell, to contain the goods and papers of the individual owning or renting the box and adapted to be removed together ivith its contents from the cell for the purpose of inspecting its con-- tents, and later returned lto and locked Within the cell. rlhese safe-deposit boxesl may be constructed of light sheet metal or otheil i'irepro'of material, preferably with one or more lids 24.

ln order to prevent the accidental placing of one of these safe-deposit boxes in the wrong cell which is then locked before the error is discovered so as to lose trace of Where the goods of one party have been erroneous ly inserted and locked in the cell of 'another individual, and to" also prevent a similar result through collusion between tvvo or more persons to gain possession of the property of another or the dishonesty of the bank representative to thereby gain possession of the property of another, l provide an insert member 26 which may be of sheet metal, and preferably with two or more edges 27 turned so that when it is inserted into one of the cells 15 and forced againsty the rear end Wall thereof the edges 2'? Will act as barbs and by engaging the side or top and bottom Walls of the cell will resist Withdrawal Aof the insert member 26 from the cell. Each insert member 26 is provided with one or more studs 28 projecting therefrom toward the door of the cells. Each of the safe-deposit boxes 22 is provided with a false rear end 29 Which is provided Wit-h one or more perforations so placed and arranged as to register with and receive the stud or studs 28 of one only of the insert members 26. Thus after a designated insert member has been placed in a designated cell, only one safety-deposit box can Vbe inserted therein a sufficient dist-ance so that its door l9may be closed and locked. I-Iencc the erroneous insertion of one safety-box into a cell which was not intended to receive it would be immediately detected and the error rectified before the door could be closed and; locked. In a similar manner any attempt on the part of one or more dishonest persons should attract the notice of and excite the suspicions of the party to be wronged before an injury had been eected, since anything necessary to be done to permit a safety-deposit box to bel locked within the wrong cell would have to be carried out in the presence of the party to be wronged.

The location of the studs 28 of the respectiveginsert members 26 indifferent positions vertically or horizontally, and the employment kof said studs in group combinations, enables a large number of combinations to be provided, that is a large number of insert members and safety-deposit boxes, ifniwhich thestud or studs of one insert member willV register with f theA perforation or p'erforations of the false rear end of only one safety-deposit box. If desired the insert members may be held in place by means of screws 30 through holes 81.

The apparatus is simple, inexpensive and requires but little space, and is adapted to guard against serious loss. Itis also applicable to prevent misplacement of file-boxes in a filing cabi-net or desk, where no individual doors are employed.

The apparatus herein shown and described is capableof considerable modification without departing from the spirit of my inventio'n.

.Vhat I claim is:

A safety deposit apparatus comprising a plurality of safety-deposit cells each cell being provided with a door to be closed and locked across the entrance to said cell, a plurality of insert members to be detachabljY inserted into the rear ends of the respective cells, and a plurality of safety-deposit boxes detachably inserted into the respective cells in front of said insert members, said insert members and safety-deposit boxes being respectively provided with members to register and interengage in pairs so that only one safety-deposit box will register and interengage with each insert member to permit both the insert member and safety-deposit box to enter the cell sulliciently for the cell door to be closed and locked thereon.

Ai safety-deposit apparatus comprising in combination with plurality of safetydeposit cells having doors to be closed and locked across the entrance thereof, a plurality of insert members having projections, a plurality of safety-deposit boxes each having a false rear end perforated to receive and register with a projection carried by an insert member, said insert members and safety-deposit boxes being arranged in pairs with registering inter-engaging projections and perforations to permit a registering pair to enter one of said cells and to have the cell door closed and locked thereon while nonregistering insert members and safety-deposit boxes will project from the cell so as to prevent the cell door closing thereon.
