Be it known that I, MAX LEVINE, a citi- Zen of Russia, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful. .lmprovements in Locks, oi which the :following is a full, clear, and exact specication.
This invention relates to door locks, and has for its object to provide an improved sliding bolt lock having a `plurality of locking bolts adapted to move in unison-and adapted to `provide great resistance to attempts to force the lock.
Another object is to provide e sliding vbolt lockrin which the bolt has three stages or positions of movement, one fully retracted, another Vprojected to an intermediate stage in which vsaid boltJ may act as fa. spring lecl; or night latch, and VVanother tullyiprojected stage in which said bolt can only 'be' retracted by a positive actuation of a key or knob. A further object is to lprovide means for retainingthe bolt in its fully-retractedposition in the casing, so that the door may be L yfreely o ened Without turningthe key l'or specification, and then more specifically de-V fined inthe claims at the end-oi'l the Ldescription.

Said rear plate 22 is secured to the posts 3 by screws 53'.y Said spindle 17 has a radially projecting roll back 24 for actuating the bolt asv hereinafter explained. The kn-ob 18, which is ournaled in the front wall of the casing 2, also carries a roll back 25 which is adapted to actuate the bolt in dependently of the rollback 2l on the spindle 17, so that said bolt may be actuated either by the knob on the inside of the door o1' by 'the key to the cylinder lock on the outside et the door.

A tumbler 30` has its main member 31 arranged between the front wall of the casing 2 and the bolt frame 1, and pivoted at one end to a stud 31 onsaid front wall. Said main portion or member of the tumbler has a laterally extending lug 32 on its tree end projectingr through the slot 29 below the bar `28 of the bolt trame. A supplemental tumbler member 33 is arranged in rear ,of
the bolt frame .1 and is secured to the main tumbler member by a screw 34; engaging said lug 32 anda superposed laterally proj ectingy Y beingurged upward to engage one ot said notches by a spring 39 attached to a'post 41.-()k on the front wall of the casing 1 and bearing at its tree end u oon the under face vand supplemental portions or members/31V Vco of the lug 32. An abutmentY or lug Ll1 on said front wall of the'casing ispositioned to limit theupward movement ofthe free end of the tumbler to the proper level for the catch or tooth 36 to engage in one of the notchesv 37 and 38. When in this nor mal position, as shown in most of the figures of the drawing,`the upper edges of the main yand 33 ot thetumblerare arranged slightly below the level ot the upper edge et the barV 28 of thebolt frame, and said tumbler members overlap the notches 26 and 27, so that Vwhen either of the rollbacks 24E or 25 is rotated about the aXis of, the spindle 17 by means of the key to the cylinder lock 20 ory sition ,of the tumbler when swung down-- ward by one Voit the roll back preparatory to moving the lock frame by engaging with one of the notches26 or 27 is indicated in dotted lines in Figure 11. f
In Figures 3, 4, and' 7 the bolt frame 1 is shown in vits intermediate position with the three bolts 6 yprojected Vtar enough to permit them to serve as a nightlatoh or spring lock.V YIt will be' no-tedvthat the rear faces or corners of the free ends of said bolt members 6 are beveled oil', as at 42, and that the notch 38 in the lower edge oi' the bar f 28 of the bolt frame is wide enough to permit said spring action of the lock bolt. Thus,
when the bolts are arranged in this intermediate position and thedoor carrying the lock is closed, the beveled ends 42 of said bolt members 6 will ride on the edge of the keeper and automatically retract said bolt Vagainst the action of the spring 14 until said members 6y register with the slots iny the keeper 9, whereupon said spring advances the bolt to engage said slots in the keeper and thereby lock the door automatically. A coiled spring 43 is preferablyV arl ranged between the post l0 and a lug 44 on the lower edge portion of the bolt frame 1 for counterbalancing the action of said bolt frame under the tension of the spring 14 which is more! spring 43. v
The bolt frame may be advanced from the position illustrated in Figure v 7 to that shownin Figure 9l by revolving either" of the roll backs, as already eXplained,said roll backs engaging the ynotch 26 in the bar 28 to effect this movement and also engaging the tumbler to release the catch 36 from the notch 38 andY seat it in the notch 37 which powerful than said f llt? is just wide enough to admit said-catch' f and consequently holds the bolt frame against reciprocation when the bolt members are in their fully advanced position,

The bolt frame may be moved from Vthe vposition shown in Figure 7 to that shown in Figures 8 and 11 by revolving either of lill) tractedposition by a vertically movable latch i l5 consisting of a lug oni a plate46 having a handle or knob 17 extending through a slot 4S in the front wall of the casing 2 for actuating said latch. The plate 46 may be further guided by a stud 49 on the `tront Wall of the casing engaging in a slot 50 in said plate, as best shown in Figure 9. Said plate may also have a depending portion 51 to cover the slot 48 in the` front wia-ll of ythe casing in which the knob 47 Works. lVhen the bolt is fully retracted, the latch plate 46 may be moved downward, as shown in Figures 11 and 12, to 'bring the latch proper or lug 45 into the path of a stud or projection 52 on ythe bolt frame 1, thus retaining the latter in its fully retracted posit-ion until said latch i-s raised to the position illustrated in Figures 9 'and 10. In this Way the bolt may be fastened Wholly Within the casing 2 so that the door may be :t'reely opened from the outside as Well as from the inside Without using a key or turning the knob 18.

The combination with a bolt casing, of a recipro-catory bolt there-in, a pair of roll baeksco-iaxially arranged With respect to each other and bo-th arranged in the plane of the bolt, said roll backs being independently and permanently journaled in opposide Walls of the casing and operable from opposite sides thereof, a pivoted tumbler having portions arranged on opposite sides ofsaid bolt, said bolt having notches to be engaged by said roll backs 2and by said tumbler, respectively, and said tumbler hav-k Y ing its portions at opposite sides of the bolt overlapping the notch to be engaged by the i of the bolt, While the other roll back engages the portion of the tumbler on the other side of the bolt.
3. The combination with a bolt casing, of a reciprocatory bolt therein, a pair of roll backs co-axially mounted in the casing and extending int-o the plane of the bolt 'from opposite sides thereof, a tumbler compris ing a main pivoted portion arranged at one side of the bolt and having a lateral lug provided With a locking tooth, and a sup# plemental tumbler portion arranged at the other side of the bolt and secured to said lug on the main portion, whereby 'both' portions Will move in unison, said bolt having notches to be engaged by said rollbacks and Yby the tooth on the tumbler, respectively,
