Be it known that I, ELI J. GAGNo-N, a citizen of the United States, residing at Exeter, county of Rockingham, State of New I-Ian'ipshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fail-Turning Machines, of which the following is a specification. Y
In my present invention the subject matter immediately involved is a machine especially adapted for the making of'wooden pails, and although it is adaptable to other uses, theembodiment shown is primarily intended for this special purpose and I shall therefore treat my invention from that point of view.
In Work of this sort the principal operations are the trimming and sanding. The difficulties in performing such operations rapidly and in an organized machine are increased by* the lvery nature of the work as it involves the handling of assembled staves which must be held so that they can be readily worked upon and which must be hooped Without breaking the original assembly so that there can be no chance of losing the finish which has been given to them in their assembled condition.
I accomplish these results by certain features and combinations which I have embodied in an organized machine illustrated in the accompanying` drawings as a speciiic embodiment adapted to the manufacture of pails along the usual lines of such manufacture. Throughout the specification and drawings like reference characters are employed to indicate corresponding parts, and in the drawings:

The machine shown in these drawings comprises a supporting base 1 on which is carried a frame 2 above which is a superstructure In the frame 2 is journaled a main shafts driven by a pulley from any suitable source of power. In the superstructure 3 is journaled a shaft 6 on which is mounted a rotary head carrying the work spindles 11. ,Thevhead 10 is provided with an external gear 10l which meshes with a pinion 1301i a shaft 14 carrying a pulley 15 which is belted to the pulley 16 on the main shaft I so that the head 10 can be turned to bring the spindles 11 from station to station for their successive operations.
These stations, as ywill be seen by reference to Figs. 11a to 15, are first the assembling station A, at which the rough staves which have been assembled and held temporarily by a heavy iron hoop are clamped on the spindle; the planing station B at which the stavesA are trimmed by a rotary cutter 23, and the sanding station C at` which the trimmed staves are finished by a sanding drum 32. Upon return to the station A. the finished staves are hooped and removed and a new rough stave assembly applied and the temporary holding ring knocked off. The details of this operation will be further described later.
At the planing station B, which is at the top of the machine,y as is best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, I provide a lcutter shaft 20. F astened on said shaft adjacent either end thereof is a pulley 21a which is cross-belted as indicated at 21b toa pair ofvpulleys 21 fastened on the ends of a counter shaft 21. One of the pulleys 21 is belted kas indicated at 21d to a driving pulley22 on the main drive shaft. On the shaft 2O is a cutter 23. The shaft 2() is journaled in a head 24 vertically adjustable by screws 25y carrying sprockets 26 Connected by a chain 27 and operated by a handle 28 for giving the proper adjustment relative' to the work on the spindles 11. At the sanding station C I provide a shaft which is journaled in a cradle 33 adllt) justably mounted as atl 34- in the top of the frame 2. The shaft 14 has at its outer end the cone member 43 of a cone clutch which engages with the opposite member of the clutch in the pulley 15. The pulley 15 is continuously driven from the pulley 16 and in turn drives a pulley50 on a kshaft 51 which carries a pinion 52meshing with thev reduced concentric portion 110at ofa double gear 110, Fig. 6. rThis gear isfree to turn on shaft 6 and the main gear portion thereof meshes with a surrounding gear train 110 which; drives the three work spindles 11 of the head 10.
The clutch member 43 yis operated by a lever 44 fulcrumed at 45 in a bracket 46. This lever is operated by a link 47 connectinga pair of toggles 48 which are operated by the rod 49 and' treadle 491. The rod 49 has its upper `end adjacent the path of a cam member 60. The cam member is mounted on the shaft 14 and rotates with it making three revolutions to each turn of the head 10 so as to stop the spindles 11` `at each ofthe three stations A, B and C.

The shaft 65 is splined to the pulleys supported in bearings 80 mounted on a bracket 81 at the side of the machine. The operation of the machine is asfollows: Referring to Figs. 11a to15, it will be seen as indicated in Fig. 11a, thatl after an assembly of rough pail staveshave beenput on and clamped at station A andA moved to station B the cutter 23) will be trimming the staves at that station while another set of staves is put on at station A (see Fig. 12). In Fig. 13 I have indicated the sanding drum 32 at station C at work on the planed staves which have come from station B. During this operation at station C while the sanding drum is finishing the staves, 'the cutter 23 is trimmingthe sta-ves previously put on at A, andv at the same time anew set ofv staves is being clamped at A. brought back on the spindle clamping the staves in position and ready to be moved at the next opera-tion of the machine to station B. The machine is again started by depressing the treadle 491 and the head 10 given its partial rotation to bring the new .st-aves to station B.
I? rom the foregoing it Will be seen that the attention of the operative is only required at station A in the hooping and removing o-f finished staves and the clamping of an assembly of unfinished staves on the spindle.
In this manner With my machine staves are not only planed and sanded but are hooped ready to go on to the next step in the manufacture.
Various modifications in the structure and detail of combination may be made all Without departing from the spirit of my invention if Within the limits of the appended claims.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. In a pail finishing machine, a rotatable ihead, a plurality of rotatable clamps for a stave assembly spaced about the saine, a plurality ot' operating stations disposed adjacent the orbital path of the stave clamps and operatively disposed in the path of peripheral movement of the stave assembly when rotated, one ofsaid stations comprisinga hoop setter and a rotatable wrench axially movable relative t0 said clamp for releasing the stave clamp, means for rotating the head and means for locking the head' at each stage of its mov-ement and stopping said head rotating means.
2. In a pail finishing machine, a rotatable head, a plurality of rotatable spindles, clamping members on said spindles for holding a stave assembly, one of said members having a threaded engagement with said spindle, a plurality of operating stations disposed adjacent the orbital path of said spindles and operatively disposed in the path of peripheraly movement of a stave assembly when rotated on said spindles, one of saidstationsvhaving a rotatable Wrench shaft reciprocable in axial alignment ii'ith the spindle positionat said station, means for selectively rotating said Wrench shaft in f vopposite directions, and means for reciprocating said wrench shaft to engage the said threaded clamp member.

In a pail finishing machine, a rotatable spindle, a threaded clamping member on said spindle, a rotatable Wrench shaft reciprocable in axial alignment With the spindle, means for selectively rotating said wrench shaft in opposite directions, and means for reciprocating said Wrench shaft to engage said threaded clamp member, and a hoop setter adjustably mounted in relation to said spindle position and having a hoop engag- Ying. roller, and means ornioving said roller against a hoop to force the same in position upon `rotation of the spindle.
5. In a pail inishingmachine, a rotatable head, a plurality of rotatable spindles,

7.
