Description

l. LAN'HAM.
Manufacture of Boots and Shoes.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LANHAM, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO EBENEZER POCOCK AND CHARLES F. GARDNER, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specilicationforming part of Letters Patent N0. 151,296, dated May 26, 1874 application filed July 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LANHAM, of London, England, Shoemaker, have invented Improvements in the Manufacture of Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
lThis invention consists in an improved heel constr cted in a peculiar manner.
Figures ,2,'and 3 show the sole and heel of a boot or shoe in the diiferent sta ges of the manufacture thereof according to my invention.
Like letters indicate the same parts throughout the drawing.
In the manufacture of boots and shoes according to this invention, I cut the sole-leather with an extension, a, to form the heel, asv shown in Fig. 1-that is to say, I form the sole and heel of one piece of leather, instead of building up the heel of a number of lifts,7 or otherwisefixing it upon a separate sole. The portion of leather a to form the heel is bent into a shape approximating to that of the finished heel, as shown in Fig. 2, and its extremity is united to the other portion by stitching, the line of junction and stitching b being preferably one ofthe corners of theJl leel, and extending down from the sole. As willbe 'clear from the above description, the heels thus formed are hollow; they therefore are afterward made solid by filling them with Wood or other suitable material.
The heel in the stage of its formation shown in Fig. 2 has the wrong side of the leather outward, and when stitched it is turned--that is to say, its position on the sole is reversed by forcing the leather which forms the heel through the aperture thereof. The sole with the heel thus formed on it is then placed in a proper shaping apparatus, which machine will be made the subject of another application, by which the required contour or conliguration is given to the said heel.
Instead of making the sole of one piece of leather, it may be made of two pieces, joined at about the center of the sole, as indicated by the dotted lines t t, Fig. 7 or the sole may be made in more than two pieces.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The heel 0f a boot or shoe formed upon the sole, and in one piece therewith, by making an extension on the sole-leather, and properly bending, and shaping, and uniting the same, as herein set forth.
2. A heel formed upon the sole of a boot or shoe bybending an extension on the sole into the proper shape, and stitching the same at the corners or other part of thel heel, and afterward finishing the same by pressing or molding, as herein set forth.
JOHN LANHAM.
