UNITED STATES WILLIAM s. PINE, or VENTEIRA, eAmronnm.
PURE-ROD-TURNING IMF-CHAIN Aipplication Medley 2A, 1924. :Seriel ,No. 7153. 86.
To all whomaz't may concern:
Be it known that .1, WILLIAM P ne, :a {citizen of -:t-l-1e United States, residing at Ventuna, in the county of Yentnra -State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump- R dTHrningMecha-nisms, of which the fol lowing is ;a specification.
invention relates broadly :to mechanical movements, and more particularly to that class .ofmiedhanicail movements adapted to rotate a moving shaft.
An important object of this invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which will positively rotate a moving shaft, and which, while being simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, will nevertheless impart to the shaft that degree of rotation necessary to prevent uneven wear, without the use of an unnecessary amount of power.
More specifically, this invention is adapted to be applied to reciprocatory pump piston rods which are a part of a rotary oil drilling rig. As is well known in the art, these pumps are used for pumping mud and the earth and sand found in this mud tends to grind against the edges of the piston and causes such uneven wear of the piston that often comparatively new pistons start leaking. Specifically applied to such a pump rod, this invention has for its object to effect slow and preferably periodic rotation of the rod whereby the pistons carried by the rod will be worn evenly throughout their entire periphery.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following specification.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the diflerent views:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a device embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is. shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, 5 designates the cylinder of the steam engine of the usual construction, 6 the pump cylinder of any standard pump, and 7 the piston rod which carries the pistons which reciprocate in said cylinders 5 and 6.
L sely m unted on the 7, and w erab y at abou the central poin he eef is a sleeve 8, provided on its side and at diamet i ly opposite poi t guid Slo :9- rm ed-ia e s adja ent -.sa-.,i.d sleeve .8 m lm e onthes hafi-Z, rat whi h is le k clin pesi onon the a nut 11 screw-thre ded on the 7.-
Suppor ed ab a th sleev Bi a 1. formed the lower end of a l ast 1331, hose do nwa dly ext nding le s at re tially encircle said sleeve 8 and terminate opposite the guide slots 9. Suspended from the ends of the legs 14 of said yoke 13 and pivotally connected thereto by means of the pins 15, is a U-shaped member 16, the legs of which are adapted to slidably fit in the guide slots 9 of the sleeve 8 and the base of which extends transversely under and below said sleeve.
Extending laterally from the U-shaped member 16, and supported by one leg thereof is an arm 17, bent as at 18 to form an upstanding yoke 19, between the legs of which is pivoted a pawl 20, held in engagement with the ratchet wheel 10, by means of a spring 21, engaging a projection 21 on the pawl projecting laterally from the pivot portion thereof. A rod 22 is supported in a stationary bearing 23, the upper end of lever 13 is provided with an opening fitting the squared end of said rod 22, as indicated at 22 so that a rocking motion of said yoke lever in the direction of reciprocation of the piston rod will effect an oscillation of rod 22 in the bearing 23.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that in operation the reciprocation of the piston rod 7 will reciprocate the sleeve 8 therewith. This movement will rock the lower end of yoke 13 on the rod 22 as a pivot, which effects an upward and downward sliding movement of the U-shaped member 16 in the guide slots 9 of sleeve 8. During this operation, the pawl 20 will ride over the ratchet teeth on the ratchet wheel 12, on the downward movement, and on the upward movement will engage in one of said teeth and effect a rotation of the ratchet and piston rod 7. The spring 21 serves to constantly hold the pawl 20 in engagement with the ratchet in this operation. It should, therefore, be clear that the above construction produces a simple means for use in conjunction with reciprocating piston rods of steam engines for effecting a rotation of the rod and wheel 19,
pistonin the operation of the engine, for preventing uneven wear in the cylinder.
Although I have herein shown and described but one form of this invention, which may be taken as the preferred embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that various modifications may be had, without departing from the spirit and scope of the inventiom as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a reciprocatory rod, of a ratchet wheel mounted on said rod, a guide sleeve surrounding said rod and adjacent said ratchet wheel, and means slidable transversely of said guide sleeve and operable to effect rotation of said ratchet wheel.
' 2; In a device of the character described,
the combination with a reciprocatory rod, of a ratchet Wheel mounted on said rod a guide sleeve surrounding said rod adjacent said ratchet wheel, a yoke supported above and partially around said sleeve, a U-shaped member supported below and partially around said sleeve, and slidable transversely thereof, and pivotally connected to said yoke, an arm projecting laterally from one leg of said U-shaped member, and a pawl carried by said member and adapted to engage said ratchet wheel, the U-shaped member having a pivotal connection at the opposite end for effecting a. sliding movement of the yoke transversely of the sleeve in the reciprocation of said rod for effecting a cooperation of the pawl with the ratchet to rotate said rod.
in testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM S. PINE.
