ferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in extension furniture for printers. y

An important object of my invention is the provision of a device of the above mentioned description which will have the maX- imum of strength and rigidity and yet will be readily adjustable todifferent sizes.

Another object of my invention is to provide a device of this character with improved means to automatically lock the device in any desired position'.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of this kcharacter which will be very simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture and yet will be strong and durable in use.

Other objects and advantages of my invention will be appare-nt during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the Several views:

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the two intertting parts of which my improved device is composed.

` The section 1 has a reduced extension 3 which is adapted to be received within the shell-like member 2, This extension 3 is only slightly reduced in size` to form the narrow shoulders' 5 and the entire memberl l is substantially solid in form. A longitudinal opening 4 may be provided centrally of said member' 1 to render it light in weight, if desired, but this opening is so arranged as not to affect the strength or rigidity of the member.

Thev section 1 is provided with the laterally extending flanges 6 formed at the top and bottom thereof. Located midway of these flanges arev the narrow grooves` 7 which communicate with the relatively wide channels 8 which are preferably arranged in parallel relation with the side walls of the section l; The groove and the channel combine to form a groove which is T-shapedv in cross-section, there being one of these T-shaped grooves on each side of the section l. f

The shell like section 2 is adapted to lit over, and slidably engage the reduced eX- tension of the member 1 and is of a size corresponding to the difference in size between the extension 3 and themain portion of the section 1. The section 2 has its sides extended to form the strips 9 which are of a length to correspond to the length' of the main portion of the section ll, and of av width to correspond to the distance between the lateral flanges 6. These strips 9 are adapted to be slidably received between the flanges 6, and to have their outer faces flush with the edges of the flanges. It will therefore be seen that when the two sections are interiitted, they will appearasy one solid block with no breaks in the surfaces thereof.

The Vstrips 9 are provided midway their width with T-shaped tongues 10 which are composed of the parallel strips 11 connected with the strips 10 by means of theV thinV webs 12. These tongues are adapted to be slidably received within the grooves in the section l, and will be retained therein against lateral movement by reason of the AT-shap'ed` tongues and grooves.

rllhe upper surface 0f the reduced eXten-l sion 3'is provided with an inset ratchet 13 the topy of which is flush with the top surface of the extension and suitable indicia 14 may be provided adjacent each tooth of the ratchetY for indicating the amount of extension.

The. upper wall ofthe shell like section 2 is provided with a. cut out portion 15 through which extends the pawl 16 which is provided with the ratchet teeth 17. upon its under surface for engagement with the ratchet 13 of the extension. The pawl is attached 'to a very -iiat spring 18 which is carried by the section 2 and the construction is such that the spring and pawl project but a slight and negligible distance above the surface of the section 2. This pawl may be actuated by the hand of the operator and no complicated actuating mechanism is necessary, and still a positive lock is obtained which does not project beyond the surface of the furniture suificiently to be in the way.

AIt can readily be seen that when the furniture 'is extended there will be no openings or cavities, and the device will still have the qualities and rigidity of a single solid block. The extension il, which fills kthe space between the two sections presents a solid surface with no breaks, and this surface is virtually a continuation of the surfaces of the two sections, as there is only a slight drop from the surface of the sections, and ythat of the extension. This is rendered possible by the arrangement of parts which is such that the shell is supported on the solid extension' which .strengthens it, even when extended, and the device `presents substantially unbroken sides when extended.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the shape, site and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or t-he scope of the subjoined claims.

Having described my device, what 1 claim and desire to protect 'by' Letters Patent is:

v1. A device of the: character Ydescribed comprising two interfitting sections whichi when extended will present an unbroken surjface of the length of Vone of the sections and a substantially unbroken surface to the remainder of the length of the two sections.

A device of the character described comprising two intertitting sections, one of said sections being of shell-like formation, the other of said sections having a substantially solid, slight-ly reduced extension adapted to be slidably received in said shelllike section, whereby the shell-like `section is strengthened thereby.

A device of the character described comprising two interiitting sections, one of said sections being' of shelllike formation, the other of said sections ihaving a substantially solid, slightly reduced extension adapted to be slidably received in said shelllike section tostrengthen the same, the sides of the shell-like section being extended to form longitudinally extending strips, said strips being provided with tonguesadapted to engage in corresponding grooves in `the other section. Y

4l.V A device of the character described comprising two interfitting sections, one of` said sections being' of shell-like formation and having its sides extended to forni .longitudinally extending strips, tongues carried by said strips and extending the entire length of the strips and `of the shell-like section, and adapted to engage corresponding grooves in the other section.

5. A device of the character described comprising two intertting sections, one of said sections being of shell-lilre formation, the other of said sections being provided with a substantially solid, slightly reduced extension adapted to be slidably received in the shell-like section, said extension being provided with a ratchet inset in its surface, and a spring pressed pawl carried by the shell-like section and engaging said ratchet, said pawl conforming to the general contour of the shell-like section.

A device of the character described comprising two interiittin sections, one of said sections bei-ng of she l-like formation, the other of said sections being .provided with a slightly reduced extension adapted to be slidably received within said shell-like section, the side walls of said shell-like portion being extended to form longitudinally extending strips, the other of said sections having each of its sides provided with a. pair of narrow flanges, the strips being adapted .to be received. therebetween, and tongues extending the entire length of said shell-like section and of said strips, and adapted to engage corresponding grooves in the side walls of `the other section, and between said ianges. Y

7. A device of the character described, comprising two interfitting sections, one of said sections being provided with a `slightly reduced extension, the other of Vsaid Lsections being of shell-like ,formation and being adapted to slidably receive the reduced extension, the side walls 'of said shell-like sec tion being extended to form longitudinally extending strips, the sides of the otherv section being each provided with a pair of narrow flanges, the strips being adapted to be received therebetween, whereby Aa Yflat surface will be formed, substantially V'slriaped tongues extending the entire length of the shell-like section and of the strips and adapted to engage corresponding grooves in the other section between the flanges, a ratchet Aformed in the upper surface of the reduced extension, 4and a spring' pressed pawl carried by the shell-like section yand engaging said ratchet, the spring' and pawl being substantially flush with 'the surface of the shell-like section.

8. A device of the character .described comprising two interfitting sections, o-ne of said sections being of shell-lilre formation, the other of said sections being vprovided with a slightly reduced extension of the length of the shell-like section and adapted to be slidably received therein, the side-walls of said shell-like section being extended to form longitudinally extending strips of the length of said other section and ofl e width substantially equal to the Width of Said Section, and tongues extending the entire length of said shell-like section and of seid strips, interiorly thereof, and adapted to engage corresponding grooves on the side-Walls of EDWIN B.
