Be it known that I, Lnwrs J. BAZZONI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swampscott, inthecounty of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented oertain Improvements in Button-ing Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to buttoning ma-- chines and is embodied in a machine of the type by which the buttoning operations are successively performed.-
The invention has for one of its objects to provide a buttoning machine which will be simple in construction and reliable and efficient in operation, and which will perform buttoning operations rapidly and with little manipulation of the shoe by the operator.
In accordance with an important feature of the invention, the buttoning instrumentalities comprise a device formed to present a lateral surface partly surrounding the but tonhole of a buttonhole fly to restrain the ly against lateral movement during the buttoning operations and means operable on the side of the buttonhole fly opposite from said device for passing a button on a button piece into a buttonhole of the fly. Preferably, and in the illustrated construction, said device is constructed in the form of a plate having a recess with which the buttonholes of the fly are successively registered, and means is provided for gripping the fly ad jacent to the buttonholes against the lateral surface of the plate. Means is also provided for co-operating' with the plate to restrain the fly from movement in the direc tion of movement of a button in entering a buttonhole of the fly, said means preferably comprising a member adapted to" be positioned substantially in the plane of the lateral surface of the plate and across the mouth of the recess but movable away from the plate to facilitate the removal of a button from the recess after the passage of the button into a buttonhole of the fly.

ti'on resides in the provision of a button gu-rd'e having a slot to receive a plurality of buttons on a button piece and improved means for guiding a buttonhole fly transversely of the plane of the button guide tofa'cilitatebuttoning certain kinds of work, such as, for example, ashoe upper, by minimizing the strain on the work. In the present eXempl i-ficationof the invention, the guiding and positioning means for the buttonhole fly comprises a plate spaced from the button guide so as to engage the outer surface of the buttonhole fly, the plate being formed integrally with the before-mentioned plate which acts to restrain the buttonhole fly against movement during the introduction of the buttons into the buttonholes of the fly.
In accordance with a still further feature of the invention common means is provided engaging both the buttons and the buttonholes for feeding the buttons and the but tonhole fly together. In the preferred organization of the machine, such means comprises a finger normally projecting across the slot of the button" guide and having a member extending beyond the outer wall of the guide in position for engagement with a buttonhole of the fly. The invention further contemplates the provision of means for preventing retrograde movement of the buttons by the finger, the latter being preferably yieldingly mounted so that upon engagement with a; button in the slot of the button guide during its rearward movement, it may be moved away from the slot of the guide toenable it to be withdrawn rearwardly of the button.
The mechanism herein illustrated may be applied to a machine of the type disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 362,548, filed March I, 1920, for inserting buttons successively. It is recognized, however, that certain features of the present in vention' are not limited in their application to a machine of such type but may be uti lized in machines of other types, including buttoning machines organized to perform a plurality of buttoning operations simultaneously.

The illustrated machine comprises a frame 2 having a top plate 4 which supports a button guide 6 projecting forwardly of the machine frame and reinforced by braces 8 secured to the guide 6 and to the frame. The button guide 6 comprises outer and inner walls 10 and 12 respectivelyspaced apart to provide a button receiving slot 14, the outer walllO of the button guide 6 being supported by bridges 16 overlying the slot 14 and spaced from the upper surface of the button guide bya distance sufficient to permit the buttons to pass beneath them. The button guide is preferably of a length to permit all of the buttons on the button piece to be operated upon to be introduced into the slot 14 prior to the initiation of the operation of the machine.
The buttonhole fly B is guided relatively to the button guide 6 by a plate 18 constructed to position the fly substantially at right angles to the plane of the button guide 6 and parallel to the axis of the buttons inthe guide. As used herein and in the appended claims, the plane of the button guide signifies the plane passing through the guide substantially at right angles to the aXes of the buttons in the slot'14. The plate 18 is spaced from the outer wall 10 of the button guide 6 by a distance such as to permit the interposition of the fly B between the plate and the button guide with the outer surface of the fly in contact with the plate. The disposition of the buttonhole fly transversely of the plane of the button guide enables the buttons to be inserted into the buttonholes of the fly with the minimum tension on the fly. The machine is thereby enabled to button the buttons adjacent to the throat of a shoe which would. be impossible if the buttonholes had to be drawn over the tops of the buttons before the buttoning operations could be performed.
In accordance with the invention means is provided for feeding the buttons in the slot 14 of the button guide 6, and, as shown, such means comprises a finger 20 fulcrumed to an arm 22 pivoted in turn on a block 24 mounted in the top plate 4 of the machine frame. The arm 22 receives its motion from a roll 28 depending therefrom and riding in the peripheral groove of a cam 26 on the cam shaft 27 of the machine. the range of movement of the finger 20 may be varied in accordance with the variations in the spacing of the buttons on the button piece, the plate 4 is provided with a slot 30 in which the block 24 may be adjusted, and I the arm 22 is formed with a slot 32 in which the block 24 moves upon adjustment of the blocl: in the slot 30 of the plate 4. Movement of the block 24 of the left (Fig. 3) will cause the extent of movement of the finger 20 to be increased, whereas movement of the block in the opposite direction will lessen the movement of the finger. -Endwise movement of the arm 22 relatively to the block 24 is prevented by the engagement of a roll 34 on said arm ith a slot 36 in the plate 4. A spring SSconnected to the finger 20 rearwardly of its fulcrum point and to the arm 22 maintains the finger normally projected across the slot 14 of the button guide 6 but permits it to yield away from the slot when in its rearward movement it engages a .button in the guide. Preferably, the button feeding finger 20 also operates to feed the buttonhole fly B and to this end, in the illustrated exemplification of the invention, the finger 20 is formed with a projection 42 which in the normal position of the finger 20 extends across the upper surface of the outer wall 10 of the button guide into position to engage a buttonhole of the fly. This construction insures that the buttons and the fly will invariably be fed in the same relation to each other so that the buttonholes of the fly will always be accurately located to receive the buttons from the guide.
At the delivery end of the slot 14, the outer wall 10 of the button guide 6 is spaced from the inner wall 12 to provide a passage .43 disposed substantially at right angles to the slot ,14 of the guide and serving to conduct the buttons from the guide. (lo-operating with the button guide at its delivery end are means for passing. the buttons from the guide successively into the buttonholes of the fly and means for controlling the fly during the passage of the buttons therethrough. As shown, the controlling .means for the fly includes an extension 44 of the plate 18 adaptedto engage the outer surface of thefiy adjacent to the buttonhole thereby to restrain the fly against movement in the direction of movement-of the buttons in enteringthelbuttonholes. -he, means for passing the buttons from the button guide 6into the buttonholes of the fly B comprises a pusher 45 slidably mountedin the frameQ of the machine and to which motion is impart.- ed by a segmental gear 46 having a slot 47 which receivesa roll 48 on an arm 49 fulcrumed at 149 to the machineframe'and operated by the cam 150 on the cam shaft 27. The slot 47 has a portion 14.7 substantially concentric with the pivot 149 of the arm 49 and terminating in ashoulder 148. The extension 44 is preferably and, as shown, formed with a recess or notch 50 with which the buttonholes of the fly B are successively registered as the fly is fed by the finger .20. After the fly has been moved to register 321 buttonhole of the fly with the recess 50, it is gripped against the inner surface of the extension 44 by a finger 51 recessed at 52 to permit a button to pass therebeneath.
In order to expedite the feeding of the buttonhole fly B by the finger 20 the fly is normally positioned with the upper expanded portions of the buttonholes substantially in the plane of the upper surface of the button guide 6 and below the heads of the buttons in the guide. Manifestly, the buttons cannot readily enter the buttonholes of the fly if the upper edges of the buttonholes are disposed below the crowns of the buttons. Consequently, the proper presentation of the buttonholes in button receiving position necessitates the raising of the-buttonhole fly. To this end, the plate 18 is secured at 54 to an ear 56 extending laterally from an arm 58 having its hub 60 fulcrumed on .a stud 62 mounted in a standard extending upwardly from the frame 2. Carried by the hub 60 of the arm 58 and disposed substantially parallel to the arm 58. is a second arm 64, and fulcrumed in the forward ends of the arms 58 and 64 is -a stud 66, on which is swinginglymounted an arm 68 recessed at 70, see Fig. 2, to receive the hub 72 of the gripping finger 51. Recessed in the arm 68 is a spring 74, the tension of which may be controlled by a screw 76, and whichtends normally to move the gripping member 5 1 away from the arm 68 to an extent determined by a stop '(not shown). The finger 51 is operated to grip the fly B against the plate 18 by a roll 80 carried by the operating lever 49and received in a slot 82 of the arm 68-said slot comprising a portion 83 substantially concentric with the shaft 149 and an eccentric portion 188. After the gripping of the fly to the plate 18, the plate is elevated by the arms 58 and 64 which are actuated by a roll 97 carried by the arm 49 and riding in a slot. 86 formed in a depending portion 84 of the lever 64 and having a portion 87 substantially concentric with the shaft 149 and terminating in a shoulder 187. Inasmuch asthe gripping member 51 is mounted on the stud 66 which, in turn is carried by the arms 58 and 64, it is manifest that the gripping member will move upwardly with the plate 18, thereby elevating the fly B.
'Means is preferably provided to oo-operate with the extension 44 of the plate 18 to restrain the buttonhole fly B effectively against movement in the direction of movement-of a-button in entering a buttonhole of the fly, and, in the illustrated construction, such means comprises a member 88 adapted to be disposed across the mouth of the recess 5,0 of the plate 18, thereby forming a substantially closed opening or passage through which the button passes after its entry into the buttonhole. To the end of facilitating the removal ofa button from the recess 50 the member 88 is formed integrally with a lever 90, fulcrumed to upstanding ears '92 and 94 on'the levers 58 and 64 respectively and moved toward and from the recess 50 of the plate 18 through the instrumentality of a tooth 96 received between teeth 98 projecting upwardly from the hub of the lever 68.
The machine is controlled by clutch mechanism of suitable construction actuated by a treadle rod 100 connectedto a lever 1G2 pivoted to the frame 2 of the machine and operatively connected to a rod 104 carrying a clutch controlling member (not shown).
The manner of operation of the machine, will, it is believed, be readily comprehended from the foregoing description but may be briefly summarized as follows: The buttons on the button piece A are first inserted in the slot 14 of the button guide 6 with the leading button preferably disposed rearwardly of the free endof the detent 40 and in advance of the button engaging end of the fingerQO which is at its rearward limit of movement as indicated in Fig. 4, when the machine is stopped. The leading buttonhole of the buttonhole fly is then engaged over the projection 42 of the finger 20, after which, the treadle rod 100 is actuated to initiate the operation of the machine. When the machine is started, the arm 22 moves the :finger 20 forward, thus advancing both the button piece A and the buttonhole fly B. The forward movement of the finger 20 is continued until the button engaged thereby is positioned at the delivery end of the slot 14 in line with the pusher 45, and the corresponding buttonhole of the fly is brought into register with the recess of the plate 18. The feeding movement of the arm 22 having been completed, the arm 49 is actuated by the cam 150. During the first part of the movement of the arm 49, the roll 80 traverses the eccentric portion 183 of the slot 82 of the. arm 68, thereby causing the gripper 51 to grip the fly B against the plate 18 and moving the member 88 substantially into the plane of the fly engaging surface of the plate 18, while the plate 18 and pusher 45 remain stationary, by reason of the rolls 97 and 48 riding in the concentric portions 87 and 147 of the slots 86 and 47 respectively. When the movements of the gripper 51 and member 88 are completed and the roll 80 has passed into the concentric portion 83 of the slot 82, the roll 97 on the arm 49 engages the shoulder 1870f the slot 86 and elevates the arms 58 and 64, plate 18, gripper 51, and member 88 so as to lift the fly to present the buttonhole in position to receive the button from the button guide. While the arms 58 and 64 are being raised, the roll 48 continues to movein the concentric portion 147 of the slot 47, in consequence of which the pusher 45 remains stationary. When, however, the upward movement of the plate 18 is completed, the roll 48 engages the shoulder 148 of the slot 47 and thus actuates the pusher 45 to pass the button into the buttonhole of the fly. The finger 20 has meanwhile been moved rearwardly to engage the next button of the button piece and the corresponding buttonhole of the fly and, upon the completion of the fastening inserting operation, the pusher 45 is retracted, the plate 18, gripper 51, and member 88, are lowered, and the gripper 51 and member 88 are withdrawn from the plate 18, such movements of the pusher 45,
plate 18,- gripper 51 and member 88 being effected in an order the reverse of that of their operative movements. This completes the cycle of operations of the machine.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a buttoning machine, the combination of a button guide having a slot to re ceive a plurality of buttons on a button piece and means movable substantially at right angles to the slot of the guide for engaging the buttons of the button piece and passing them successively into the buttonholes of a buttonhole fly.

13. In a butto-ning machine, the comb-ination of a button guide having a slotto receive a plurality of buttons on a button piece, means for passing a button on the button piece, into a buttonhole of a butto-nhole fly comprising a plate constructed for engagement with the outer surface of the fly and having a recess through which a button pass, and movable means disposed for engagement with the fly below the plate and co-ope-rating with the plate to restrain the fly from movement in the direction of movement of the button in entering the buttonhole of the 15. In a buttonmg machine, the combination of a button guide having a slot with an angu lar ly arranged delivery end to which the buttons on a button piece are fed, a buttonhole fly engaging plate having a recess arranged opposite the delivery end of the slot and means for passing the buttons from the slot into the but-tonholes and the recess.
18. In a buttoning machine, means for inserting the buttons on a button piece successively into the but-tonholes of a buttonhole fly comprising common means engaging both the buttons and the buttonholes for feeding the buttons and the buttonhole fly together.
19. In a buttoning machine, the combination of a button guide having a slot to receive a plurality of buttons on a button piece, means for positioning a buttonhole fly relatively to the button guide, and common means for feeding the buttons and the buttonhole fly.
20. In a buttoning machine, the combination of a button guide having a slot to receive a plurality of but-tons on a button piece, and feeding means for the buttons comprising a projection disposed to engage a buttonhole of a buttonhole fly thereby to feed the fly simultaneously with the feeding of the buttons' 21. In a buttoni-ng machine, the combination of a device formed to present a lateral surface partly surrounding the buttonhole of a buttonhole fly to restrain the fly around the hole against lateral movement in the buttoning operation, and means operable on the side of the fly opposite from said device for passing a button into a buttonhole of the fly.
22. In a buttoning machine, the combina tion of a plate having a recess through which a button may pass and disposed to position a buttonhole fly and means operable on the side of the fly opposite from said plate for passing a button into a buttonhole of the fly and through said recess.
23. In a buttoning machine, the combination of a device formed to present a lateral surface against which a buttonhole fly may rest and having a recess to allow passage of a button, means for gripping the fly against said surface, and means operable on the side or" the fly opposite from said surface for passing a button through said recess into a buttonhole of the fly.
24. In a buttoning machine, the combination of a device formed to present a lateral surface partly surrounding the buttonhole of a buttonhole fly, means operable on .the side of the fly opposite from said device for passing a button into a buttonliole of the fly, and mechanism for engaging the fly adjacent to said device and co-act-ing with said device to restrain the fly against movement in the direction of movement of a button in entering a buttonhole.
25. In a buttoning machine, the combina-. tion of a device formed to present a lateral surface against which a buttonhole fly may rest and having a recess through which a button may pass, means operable on the side of the fly opposite from said device for passing a button into a buttonhole of the fly, a member movable toward said recess substantially to the plane of said lateral surface and co-acting with said device to restrain the fly from movement in the direction of movement of the button in entering the buttonhole, and means for moving said member.
26. In a buttoning machine, means for passing a plurality of buttons on a button piece successively into the'buttonholes of a buttonhole fly, a plate disposed for engagement with the outer surface of the fly to restrain it from movement in the direction of movement of the buttons in entering the buttonholes, and means for moving the fly along said plate.
27. In a buttoning machine, the combination of means for successively passing a plurality of buttons on a button piece into the buttonholes of a buttonhole fly, means for feeding the fly, a flat plate disposed for engagement with the outer surface of the fly to restrain it from movement in the direction of movement of the buttons in entering the buttonholes, and a member co-operating with said plate to restrain the buttonhole fly against such movement.
28. In a buttoning machine, the combination of means for successively passing the buttons on a button piece into the buttonholes of a buttonhole fly, a plate disposed for engagement with the outer surface 'of the fly to restrain it from movement in the direction of movement of a button in entering a buttonhole of the fly, and means for gripping the fly adjacent to the upper edge of the buttonhole against said plate.
29. In a buttoning machine, the combination of a button guide having a slot to receive a plurality of buttons on a button piece, means for feeding a buttonhole fly, means for passing a button on the button piece into a buttonhole of the fly, and means separate from the feeding means for raising the fly to present the buttonhole in position to receive the button.
30. In a buttoning machine, the combination of a button guide having a slot to re-' ceive a plurality of buttons on a button piece, means for guiding a buttonhole fly relatively to the button guide, means for passing a button on the button piece into a buttonhole of the fly, means for gripping the fly against said guiding means, and means for elevating the guiding means and the gripping means to raise the fly to pre sent the buttonhole in position to receive the button.

In a buttoning machine, the combination of means forsuccessively passing the buttons on a button'piece into the buttonholes of a buttonhole fly, a plate disposed for engagement with the outer surface of the fly to restrain it from movement in the direction of movement of the buttons in entering the buttonholes of the fly, means for gripping the fly against theplate adjacent to the upper edge of a buttonhole in the fly, and means for raising therplate and the gripping means to elevate the fly to present the buttonhole in button receiving position.

In a buttoning machine, the combination of means for successively passing the buttons on a button piece into the buttonholes of a buttonholefly and mechanism constructed and arranged to restrain the fly against movement in the direction of movement of the buttons in entering the buttonholes of the fly and operable to lift the fly relatively to said passing means to present the buttonholes of the fly in button receiving position.

In a buttoning machine, the combination of means for successively passing thebuttons' on a button piece into the button holes of a buttonhole fly, mechanism constructed and arranged to restrain the fly against movement in the direction of movement of the buttons in entering the buttonholes of the fly and operable to lift the fly relatively to said passing means to present the buttonholes of the fly in button receiving position, and means'for feeding the 'fly relatively to said mechanism.

In a buttoning machine, means for passing the buttons on a button piece successively into the buttonholes of a buttonhole fly, .guiding means for the fly'disposed for engagement with. the outer surface of the fly, means for supporting said guiding means, means journaled in said supporting means for gripping the fly against the guiding means, and means fulcrumed to said supporting means and constructed and arranged for co-operation with the guiding means to restrain the fly against movement in the direction of movement of the buttons in entering the buttonholes of the fly.
38. In a buttoning machine, means for positioning a buttonhole fly, means for gripping the fly against the positioning means, and common operating means for the positioning means and the gripping means.

In a buttoning machine, a button guide, means for positioning a buttonhole fly, means for gripping the fly against said positioning means, means for passing a button from the guide into a buttonhole of the fly, and means for moving the positioning means and the gripping means relatively to said guide to present a buttonhole of the fly in position to receive the button.

In a buttoning machine, means for positioning a buttonhole fly, means for passing the buttons on a button piece successively into the buttonholes of the fly, a device co-operating with the positioning means to restrain the fly against movement in the direction of movement of the buttons in entering the buttonholes of the fly, means for operating said device, and means operable by said operating means for gripping the fly against said positioning means.

In a buttoning machine, the combination of means for positioning a buttonhole fly, means for passing the buttons on a button piece successively into the buttonholes of the fly, means for gripping the fly against the positioning means, means for elevating the positioning means and the gripping means to present a buttonhole of the fly in button receiving position, and common operating means for the elevating means, the gripping means, and the passing means.

In a buttoning machine, the combination of means for passing the buttons on a button piece successively into the buttonholes of a buttonhole fly, means for guiding the fly disposed for engagement with its outer surface and formed to provide a passage for a button, and means for feeding the fly to register a buttonhole of the fly with said passage.

In a buttoning machine, the combination of means for passing the buttons on a button piece successively into the buttonholes of a buttonhole fly, a plate disposed for engagement with the outer surface of the fly to guide the fly and having a recess on its under side through wnich a button may pass, and means for feeding the fly to register a buttonhole of the fly with saidrecess.
44'. In a buttoning machine, the combination of means for passing a button on a button piece into a buttonhole of a buttonhole fly and mechanism disposed on the side of the fly opposite from the passing means and constructed to contact with the fly substantially all the way around the buttonhole.

In a buttoning machine, the combination of means for passing a button on a button piece into a buttonhole of a buttonhole fly, and mechanism disposed for engagement with the side of the fly opposite from the passing means and constructed to provide asubstantially closed opening through which a button may pass.

In a button machine, the combinaation of means for passing a button on a button piece into a buttonhole of a buttonhole fly, and mechanism disposed for engagement with the side of the fly opposite from the passing means and constructed to provide a substantially closed opening through which a button may pass, said mechanism comprising members movable relatively to each other to facilitate the withdrawal of the button from said opening.

In a buttoning machine, the combination of means for passing a button on a button piece into a buttonhole of a buttonhole fly, and mechanism disposed for engagement with the side of the fly opposite from the passing means and constructed to provide a substantially closed opening through which a button may pass, said mechanism comprising a member formed with a recess and a second member operable to engage the fly across the mouth of said recess but movable away from the recess to facilitate the withdrawal of the button from the recess.

In a buttoning machine, buttoning instrumentalities, means for guiding the but tons on a button piece to said buttoning instrumentalities, an arm, a finger carried by the arm and successively engaging the buttons to feed the button piece, means for actuating the arm, a movable fulcrum for the arm for varying the stroke of the arm in accordance with the spacing of the buttons, and means to maintain the finger in the desired path when the fulcrum is moved.

In a buttoning machine, buttoning instrumentalities, means for guiding the buttons on a button piece to said buttoning instrumentalities, an arm, a finger connected to the arm and successively engaging the buttons to feed the button piece, means for actuating the arm, and a movable fulcrum for the arm to vary the feed in accordance with the spacing of the buttons.
