IMPEovEMENT IN CARPET-sTRETcHERs.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,193, dated May 26, 1874; application filed January 2, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELLIS L. BAKER, of Harford, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in- `vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speciiication.

The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in carpet-stretchers; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of devices, which will be more fully described hereafter.

The accompanying drawings represent my invention.

a represents two bars, of any desired length, which are bound together by means of the cross-pieces b, and which may be made long enough to stretch across any room, by adding suitable sections c to their rear ends. These sections will be of varying lengths, to suit the length and width of the room being carpeted, and are attached to the bars a by means of the tenons or studs d, on their front ends, which fit into sockets in the rear ends of the bars, and the sections are then held firmly in position by the braces c. In between the bars a is placed the bar g, to which is secured, at its front end, the board h, having a number of tine wires or tacks driven through it, which catch hold of the carpet and push it forward so as to stretch it. In the top of this bar g are a number of recesses, i, in which the pawl 2 catches, so as to move the bar forward. This pawl is attached to the handlever 3, which is pivoted to the top of the two bars'a, so that, by moving the lever forward, the pawl catches in one Vof the notches or recesses i, and moves the bar g forward, so as to stretch the carpet. Fastened to the side of the lever 3 is a catch or stop, 4, which catches in the notches 5 in the top of one of t-he bars a, and this prevents the bar g' from moving backward while the operator is tacking down that portion of the car-` pet just stretched.

By means `of the hand-lever, pawl, and catch, a person can stand on the frame, stretch the carpet to any desired extent, lock it in that position by means of the catch, and then step oft' and tack it down.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the frame a, extensible sections c, bar g h, lever 3, pawl 2, catch 4, and notches 'i 5, substantially as shown and described.
