To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT G. SAART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compact Containers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to vanity cases or containers for compacts such as powder,

rouge, and the like.

The essential objects of my invention are to enable the container to be inserted with facility into a tight pocket or purse, and to be carried without bulging the pocket or other receptacle; to enable the location of the mirror at any desirable angle and in such optional positions as not to interfere with access to either the rouge compact or the powder compact when one or the other is temporarily in use, and without reversal or change of position of the open casing; to facilitate the opening of the casing upon release of the catch; and to attain these ends in a simple and inexpensive structure.

My invention consists in the means for producing the results above specified substantially as hereinafter claimed.

As illustrated the container consists of a casing 8 comprising two convexo concave wings 9 and 10 provided with peripheral sleeves 11 and 12 respectively upon a pintle 13, the same constituting a hinge. The wings or shells 9 and 10 have inwardly directed horizontal flanges 15 and 16 respectively, with oppositely disposed notches 17 and 18 respectively. Soldered or otherwise fixed to the inner face of the wing 10, and abutting the inner edge of the flange 16 exindicate like cept adjacent the notch 18, is a wall 20 with inturned lugs 21 upon its upper edge in the plane of the flange 16. This flange has near the hinge ahole 23, as shown in Figure 2, through which loosely projects above the flange a vertical finger 24 upon one end of a resilient horizontal arm 25 soldered at its other end to the wing below the flange. When the wings are fully distended the finger 24 projects above the flange 16, but when the wings are brought together the flange 15 strikes and depresses the finger.

Hence the finger and arm 25 exert such a pressure that when the wings are released they are immediately forced away from each other.

Below the flange 16 adjacent the notch 18 the wing 10 is provided with a slot 27 through which extends a projection or finger piece 28 upon a plate 29 having a vertically projecting lug 31 provided with a shoulder 32. The lug 31 registers in the slot 18 and the plate 29 is fast to one end of a horizontal spring arm 33 soldered at its other end to the wing 10. The last described parts constitute a spring catch, since the shoulder 32 is in the path of the notched portion 17 of the flange 15, and snaps over the latter when the wings are brought together.

A cake or powder compact 35 is adapted to rest upon the inner face of the wing 10 and support thereon a pad or powder puff 37 retained by the lugs 21 and provided with a tab 38.

Fixed by solder or otherwise to the interior face of the wing 9 concentrically with the latter is an arcuate wall 40 provided with inturned retaining lugs 41. A rouge or other cake or compact 42 may rest upon the inner face of the wing 9 and against the wall 40 having upon its top a pad or puff 44 overlapped and retained by the lugs 41.

A mirror member 46 is provided consisting in this instance of a circular plate 47 having a flange 48 frictionally embracing a ring 49 engaging the mirror 50 and provided with a retaining flange 51 overlapping the latter. At diametrically opposite points upon the flange 48 are pivot pins or trunnions 53 embraced by sleeves 55 upon the ends of curved arms 56 integral with and branching from a leaf 57 having upon its inner edge a hinge sleeve 58 embracing the pintle 13. The arms and leaf thus constitute a pivoted yoke. When the case is closed the leaf 57 normally rests upon the flange 16, and registers in a depression 60 in the flange 15. When the case is open the yoke maybe manually lifted any desired distance and the mirror member may be manually turned on its trunnions to any desired angle and be held entirely out of contact with both wings if desired, or its lower edge may rest without manual contact upon either wing or upon the contents of either wing. In Figure 3 the mirror memher is shown in full lines resting upon the upper edge of the wall 40, so that access is had to the contents of wing 10. In broken lines the member is shown resting on the pad 37 while access is afforded to the contents of wing 9.

It will be observed that the flanges upon the wings conceal the actuating means of the catch, member and the spring member.

It will be further noted that the conveXo concave construction of the wings enables the container to be easily inserted into a pocket or elsewhere and to occupy a minimum of space.

In a container of the type set forth, two conveXo concave wings, a horizontally disposed inwardly-directed flange upon each Wing, the flange of one Wing being provided with a hole, said wing being provided with a slot beneath the flange, a plate adjacent said flange, a projection on the plate extending through the slot, a lug on the plate extending above the flange and provided with a shoulder for cooperation with the flange of the second wing, a resilient arm fast to the 'plate'at one end and to the wing at its other end below said flange, a second resilient arm carried by the wing below the flange, a finger on the arm projectingthrough the hole engageable with the flange of the opposite wing to separate the wings when the catch is released, and a hinge connecting the wings,

In a container of the type set forth, two convexo concave wings, a hinge member connecting the wings, inwardly directed peripheral flanges upon the wings, walls in the Wings adapted to engage compacts, ,i'nwardly directed lugs upon the walls adapted to overlap compacts, a yoke comprising a leaf, a sleeve on one end of the leaf pivotally engaging the hinge member, and diverging arms upon the other end of the leaf, and a mirror member pivotally supported between the same. 7
