ADJUSTABLE MOUNTING DEVI CE Filed Jan. 5. 1920 Fly 1 WITNESS ESZ 13f] Mm AT TORNEY Patented Oct. 14, 1924.
UNITED STATES 1,511,336 PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL C. HOEY, OF WILKINSBU'RG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC 8a MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
ADJUSTABLE MOUNTING DEVICE.
Application filed January 3, 1920. Serial No. 349,285.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL 0. H0111, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkin'sburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Mounting Devices, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to an adjustable mounting device for slide rails and bed plates and it has particular relation to bed plates for motors and other machinery.
The object of my invention is to provide an eflicient, durable, and economical means for adjustably mounting motors, dynamos and other machinery so as to permit the movement thereof for proper alignment and other purposes.
Heretofore, motors have had a groove in each foot in which a corresponding tongue on the slide rail fitted, thereby permitting.
movement of the motor in a direction parallel with the groove.
In accordance with my invention, the motor foot and the bed plate are machined flat, and the guiding action is obtained by providing an elongated slot in the bed plate and by passing a holding member through ghis slot and through a hole in the motor oot.
A better understanding of my invention may be obtained by referring to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a motor supported by slide rails equipped with my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse detail view, partially in section and partially in elevation of the same taken along the line IIII of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal detail view, partially in section and partially in elevation taken along the line IIIIIT of Fig. 1, of the end of a guide rail, with a motor foot slidably mounted thereon. The other end of the guide rail is similar to the one shown in Fig. 3 except that the jack screw 8 is removed.
Referring particularly to Fig. 1, a motor 1, provided with feet 2, is mounted upon the slide rails or bent plates 3. Each slide rail has an elongated slot 1 in that portionwhich is in contact with the feet 2. A bolt 5 projects through the slot 1 of the slide rail 3 and a counter-bored hole 6 in the foot 2 and is retained in position by a nut 7. The bolt 5 may be moved along the slot 4 by rotating an adjusting screw 8..
belt-tightening,
Referring particularly to Fi s. 2 and 3, the adjusting screw 8 is passed through a hole 9 in the end of the slide rail 3 and through a threaded head 10 of the bolt 5. Between the head 10 ofthe bolt 5 and the surface of the guide rail 3 is a connecting strap 11 which is a relatively long strip of metal having bent end portions 12 (only one end portion being shown). The bent end portions 12 prevent the bolts 5 from rotating while the nuts 7 are being screwed thereon. The strap 11 has two bolt holes 13 (one is not shown) spaced apart a distance equal to the distance between the bolt holes 6 in the corresponding feet 2 of the motor 1.
On each bolt 5 an annular locking ring 14 is mounted. This ring has two circular portions, one of which is of greater diameter than the other. The portion of the ring 14 that is of lesser diameter is seated in the slot 4. of the frame 3 and the remainder thereof fits in the counter-bored hole 6 of the motor foot 2. The bolt 5 has an annular groove 15 surrounding it in which a ring 16 of spring wire is retained.
The motor 1 has a pulley 17 to which is attached a driving belt. (Not shown.)
The method of assembling my slide-rail device is as follows :a connecting strap 11 is so placed against the slotted portlon of the slide rail 3 as to have the bent-end portions 12 turned outwardly. The bolts 5 are so positioned, through the bolt holes 13 of the strap 11 and the elongated slot 4 of the guide rail 3, that the adjusting screw may be passed through the threaded portion of either bolt head 10. The annular ring 14 is next placed upon the bolt 5 in the manner shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. The retaining ring 16 is positioned in the grooved portion 15 of the bolt 5, thereby holding the bolt in position until the mo tor foot 2 is mounted thereon and the nut 7 secured thereto. The adjusting screw 8 is inserted through the hole 9 in the frame 3 and the head 10 of the bolt 5.
When the screw 8 is so rotated that the bolt 5 is drawn toward the end of the guide rail 3, the connecting stra 11 and the motor 1 cause the remaining olt 5 to move in the same direction. The movements of the bolts 5 also cause the motor feet 2 to be drawn in the same direction. If it is desired to reverse the movement of the motor,
with the elongated slot and, when it is operated, the force exerted is parallel to the direction in which the motor is moved.
The entire device is protected by being underneath the guide rail.
While I have shown a' preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art, that it is susceptible of various minor changes and alterations without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limita- I tions shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art or as are specifically set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. In an adjusting-screw device, the combination with a frame member having an elongated slot, of a'bolt slidably mounted in said slot and having a transversely threaded portion in its head, means for ensuring a sliding fit of said bolt in said slot, and screw means co-operating with said threaded head, adapted to alter the position of said bolt in the slotted portion of said frame.
