' citizen of the United States, and residing at Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie Cords for Containers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1

This invention relates to improved means for attaching tie cords of various kindsand classes-in connection with boxes or other containers as well as for securing reta ning strips or straps in connection with such articles, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, effective, strong and durable means for attaching strings, cords, straps orthe like to containers of various kinds and classes; and with this and other objects in View the invention consists in the hereinafter described and claimed means for carrying my invention into effect.

The invention isfully disclosed in the following specification, of which the. accompanying drawing forms apart, 'in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable refer'encecharaoters in eachof the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of abox showing a number of tie cords attached thereto and indicating the --method of their use part 'of the construction being broken away and in section,

Fig. 2 is a partial sectionon the line 2-{2 of Fig. 1; and,

Fig. 3 is a sectional view through a modified form of container showinga retaining strip mounted in accordance with my invention.

In Figs. 1 and 2 ofthe drawing, I have shown for the purpose of illustrating one method of carrying my invention into effect, a box 5 comprising a bottom member 6 and side and end walls 7, the box 5 is open at the top and adapted tobe closed by a cover 8 in the usual or any desired manner.

My invention consists in attaching to the outer faces of the side or end walls 7 of the box one end'portion of strap members 9 by theuse of one or more staples 10 so that 1923. Serial No. 644,322.

when the cover 8 is placed, upon the box 5 the side and end walls 8 of the cover conceal the staples 10,'and the free end portions of the strap members 9 are extended upwardly around the cover and are tied together to retain the cover 8 in connection with the box 5.

If desired, these straps may be both of the same length or one may be shorter than the other so that they may be .tied at any desirable pointbut, in the construction shown, the straps 9 both are of substantially the same length. v

By securing thestraps 9 or any other members of this kindto containers of various kinds and classes, said straps may be quickly and simply attached to the container or any artthereof, and yet securely held in connection therewith, thus avoiding thefexpense in producing containers with said members as has heretofore been the custom by providing apertures in the container and threading a long strap member therethrough or by gluing or stitching short strap members to the containers. With my invention, however, I not only simplify the method of attaching the strap members but also save in .thematerial used as strap members thus as a whole materially reducing the cost/of producing the entire box. I

I may also secure other strap members 11 to the inner faces ofthe walls '7 of the box to be used for retaining garments, fabric or the like 12 within the container in predetermined position, and the strap members 11 may be secured by the same staples 10-passed through the strap members 9, or may be separately secured-by the use of other sta-- ner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing and the free ends allowed to extend outwardly and inwardly of the box at the opposite sides thereof, and this method of procedure is indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

In Fig. 3 of the drawing, I have shown a box or container 5 having a cover member 13 movably connected with one side thereof by a. hinge structure .14 and said figure I have shown a strap member 15 which is designed to support the cover member 13 in an open position, and, in practice, I attach the end portions of the strap members 15 to the box 5- and to th cover member 13 by staples 16 in the same manner as attaching the

9 and 11 to the box 5 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that my; invention is not limited to the securing of strap members to any specific container nor am I necessarily limited to attaching, what I term, tie cords or straps to such container, as I may attach and secure strings, cords, straps, tapes or the like to any kind or class of a container, and for any purpose, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described. may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A box of the class described comprising a box member proper and a cover member, the side walls of said box member being provided with tie cords secured thereto by one or more staples, the attached end portions of said tie clords being located within the side walls of the cover member and the free end portions of said tie cords being adapted to extend outwardly, upwardly and around said cover member for securing the same to the box member.

2. In a box of the class described, a box member and cover member, and tie cords secured to the outer faces of the side walls of the box member adj accnt to the upper edges thereof by one or more staples the attached ends of said cords being concealed within the walls of the cover member when said cover member is mounted in connection with the box member.

3. In a box of the class described, a box member and cover member, tie cords secured to the outer faces of the side walls of the box member adjacent to the upper edges thereof by one or more staples the attached ends of said cords being concealed within the walls of the cover member when said cover member is mounted in connection with the box member and said tie cords being adapted to extend outwardly, upwardly and around the cover member for securing the same to said box member.

4. In a box of the class described, a box member and cover member, tie cords secured to the outer faces of the side walls of the box member adjacent to the upper edges thereof by one or more staples, said tie cords being adapted to extend outwardly, up wardly and around the cover member for securing-the same to said box member, and the attached ends of said tie cords being located within and concealed by the side walls of the cover member.

5. In a box of the class described, a box member and cover member, tie cords secured to the outer faces of the side walls of the box member adjacent to the upper edges thereof by one or more staples, said tie cords being adapted to extend outwardly, upwardly and around the cover member for securing the same to said box member, the attached ends of said tie cords being located within and concealed by the side walls of the cover member, and other tie cords secured to the inner faces of the side walls adapted to retain the contents of the boxmember in predetermined position.

6. In a box of the class described, a box member and a cover member, tie cords securedv to the outer faces of the walls of said box member adjacent to the upper edge thereof, the attached ends of said cords being concealed by the cover member when mounted upon the box member, and said tie cords being adapted to extend outwardly and around the cover member for securing the cover member in connection with the box member.

7. In a box of the class described, a box member and a cover member, tie cords secured to the outer faces of the walls of said box member adjacent to the upper edge thereof, the attached ends of said cords being concealed by the cover member when mounted upon the box member, said tie cords being adapted toextend outwardly and around the cover member for securing the cover member in connection with the box member, and other tie cords secured to the inner faces of the walls of said box member where said first named cords are attached.

8. In a box of the class described, a box member and cover member, the walls of the cover member overlying predetermined portions of the walls of the box member, tie cords secured in oppositely disposed rela tions to that portion of the wallsof the box member covered by the walls of the cover member, and said strap members extendingoutwardly and being adapted to be passed around the cover member to retain the same in connection with the box member.
